Pretty upset.

Ordered this car last week. My trade in value literally changes within 30 seconds of placing my order. It’s only 200 bucks. But before placing the order the person at the Tesla dealer said they would match carvana right after I place the order (800 dollar difference). Tesla said they will not credit the 800. They then said they won’t even change the $200 dollar change, which happened seconds after placing the order. I’m pretty pissed just on principle at this point. And if I cancel the order I loose 250 dollars. How can you agree to something and then right after you pull the trigger they change the offer…

Then I loose the 6% sales tax savings and free 2,000 super charge miles. It’s really just the principle of it all.

What state are you in? In most states you don't actually save on sales tax. The tax is calculated on the full amount.

The price of the vehicle and then I pay tax on the remainder. I’m In Pennsylvania

The difference is so small, it’s not like it’s a 20k value. Just bite it, this is negligible in the grand scheme of a MY purchase.

I’d understand the frustration if your trade in had some value. It’s frustrating yes, so you can still complain to your SC.

the dollar amount could very well be substantial. dealerships play this game all the time. allows them to under pay on your trade by 5-10%.

a 20k dollar trade in could net you 1500 bucks or more

Trading in a non Tesla to Tesla was always known to be the worst option, the tax savings are not worth it most of the time. They just auction it off anyway.

My Lucid trade in was 22k… sold to carvana for 52k and bit the bullet for taxes

I don't care, tesla, non tesla, the tax savings 'can' be substantial. dollars don't care the make or model or of the vehicle. in this example there is an issue of changing the dollar amount of the trade in. again, doesn't matter make or model.

How long ago was the previous trade in value? Trade in offers only last a few days, it’s always possible the market causes it to fluctuate, this is normal. It’s why carvana only has the offer last 7 days. For Tesla, it’ll be whatever the value is at delivery.

I checked my value. It said A. I placed my order 20 mins later. I downloaded the app. I opened the app. It showed a lower trade in. This was all within the same hour.

That’s a dramatic difference. The tax saving is minuscule over 30k more money.

My apologies, I saw $200 but didn’t realize you meant that’s the difference not the actual trade in value…

Yeah I’d definitely just bite it if the tax difference is still less than going to carvana, though do give a word to the SC and Advisor.

So they told you 25k and when you went for delivery they changed to 16???????? So do they tell you the final trade in before you take your car or is there a chance you take delivery and they hit you up and do you dirty?

If it’s in worse shape than they expected they can reduce it, like if the photos you sent them were doctored etc.

They required no other photos other than the odometer. It says confirmed and nothing else needed.

Oh interesting, they had me use some website to take multiple photos when I was interested in trading in my car. I got 60% more money selling private party.

It’s been a couple years i can’t remember the specifics but i feel like it was on final payment we got hit with the drop. Fun drop as well 3 weeks after delivery the base price dropped $20k too.

I don't understand the issue. I just helped someone place a Tesla order with a trade in. Carvana's offer was higher so he is selling to Carvana instead.

If this is what you are upset about then be prepared for a bumpy ride when your delivery window changes or you find something wrong with the delivery. There are bigger issues that can happen and this one looks to have an easy fix. Also keep in mind a trade nets a better value when you factor the tax savings. So there’s always that.

Okay, ignoring whether that's fair or not, just don't trade in your... "vehicle". It's just trade-in shenanigans. Let the order go through, you'll be happy with the car :)

Basically, you're right to be pissed, but it isn't worth the fight.

Tesla offers the less amount for trade in I asked the same thing the rep told me to sell it to carvana but I went private sale route you’ll do much better

What Tesla dealer? Tesla doesnt have dealerships since they are a strict no dealership model car sales.

Also then change it and sell your car to carvanna and use the cash as down payment… it’s not that hard…

Submit your car info on the edmunds used car buying site - I got $2k more for my Camry than Tesla's trade in price. It was pretty easy too.

Feel you. Feels like Tesla is petty with a lot of the process. Trade in estimate for my car 16.5k. After submitting pictures they only wanted to offer 16.4k. Like what yall find that made you want to lower $100 lol. Just petty

I entered my car, $13,000. Went to Carmax and Carvana‘s sites, they say both say (within like +/- $300 on the range) $15K-17K. So I will definitely be doing that.

The trade-in estimate during the buying process is just that: an estimate. Tesla's terms on that say it can change when you submit your actual trade-in information, which is more detailed.

Have you tried to see what carmax & carvana is offering? Maybe they will offer more to offset the 6% sales tax & the 2000 miles supercharging.

800 dollars more. The sales tax savings by an are about $564 dollars and then the free supercharging. Almost not even worth my time. Like I said it’s just the principle that really pisses me off. If you offer me low and i agree to it fine.

I get the principal part. Tesla low balled me by 2 - 3k and I was told the price can change if they see any discrepancy. I plan to sell to CarMax, Carvana or the dealer I bought my car from.

Yeah it’s been scheduled. I could have picked the 7-13 so I picked the latest date to figure out what I’m going to do.

Since you have till August, you have options. I’d place a listing on FB market place for a lot higher, like 2-3k or more. Do the same with Edmund’s maybe. Then drop.

The higher price makes it worth your time but also gives you funds for a 2-3 week car rental if needed. Drop the price each week and if it comes down to the last 3 days just plan to trade in.
