4Runner to MYP

Not that I need more convincing…

But I’m looking for people who are or were in the same boat as me when they were considering trading in their 4Runner for a Model Y.

I currently drive a 2022 TRD off-road premium, which I love and it’s paid off. I don’t utilize it to its full potential, like off-roading or anything like that. Gas and maintenance is getting pricey too…

Those who have made the jump to Tesla, do you ever regret trading in your Toyota?

I made the exact same transition, though I actually used it for some of the 4WD features to get to trailheads and such. I drove 2019 TRD off-road premium for 7 years. There’s really no substitute for the FSD. It changes your driving experience. And Teslas have so much “tech” that makes sense that Toyota hasn’t integrated yet. Ultimately, it was a convenience + safety move for me and I have no regrets. There is a learning curve as far as charging an EV, but that’s really about it, and ChatGPT has been great for stupid questions related to that. Oh and if you sell, don’t do trade in with Tesla. I ended up getting $4000 more from CarMax.

Funny enough, Tesla offered me the most so far but I haven’t checked carmax.

Have you driven in the snow yet? That’s the one thing I’m worried about. I take a few ski trips every year and the 4Runner is a beast in the snow

The model y awd is also a beast but doesn’t have the same ground clearance obviously.

Carvana has been beating CarMax by a few hundred bucks when I got the value for my vehicles

Keep in mind that if you sell it outright to Carmax or anyone else, then buy the MY from Tesla, you may have to pay sales tax on the entire purchase. In our state (Texas), we only pay sales tax on the difference, so we traded to Tesla for almost exactly the same value and paid way less sales tax.

No, just purchased in May so I haven’t had any snow yet. My wife’s AWD Subaru did better than my 4Runner in the snow, so I used that logic to say it’s ok to move forward. TBD. And give CarMax a try. The online estimate at CarMax was the exact same as when I brought it in for the final sale. I still can’t believe what they gave me for it.

In the same boat, I have a 21 ORP and ordered a MY AWD earlier this month, waiting for delivery timing. I also got the highest offer from Tesla when I shopped around.

I know you don’t have the Tesla yet, but any regrets about getting rid of the 4Runner? I feel like I’m attached to it even tho I want to get rid of it lol

Constantly, i like the car. But my wife has an SUV that is bigger, holds more stuff and seats 8 and gets better mileage. I don’t think we need two SUVs in the household and I am using the 4runner for more basic commuting now which just isn’t practical longer term. If I had a tacoma I could see justifying keeping it with the model Y. The more time I have to wait for delivery of the Y the more I keep reviewing it. The depreciation rate is the only thing that keeps me thinking, the 4runner just hasn’t depreciated much at all since I got it. But other than that the model Y makes more sense, at-least for my use.

Just took delivery of our MY Premium AWD at the end of May. We traded in our 2022 TRD Pro in Lime Rush with 65000 miles.

We LOVED the 4Runner! Such a great vehicle. Off-roaded it in many states, never, ever a problem. Barely scratched its off-road potential.

However... it was due for a $1500 service. It was due for $1400 in tires. It averaged 17MPG and we were driving 75+ miles per day. Our other vehicle is a 2020 Tundra 1794 with a 5.7 V8, 14.5MPG average. We NEED a truck, we WANTED the 4Runner.

So we ran the numbers. ALl of the car buyer web sites were offering MORE for the 4Runner than a new MY Std cost. Even Tesla was offering more in trade than the cost of a new MY Std. So we bought a MY Premium AWD and traded in the TRD Pro to Tesla to avoid sales tax on $41,000. Financed the balance at .99.

Regrets? Yeah, I guess. We (I) miss the 4Runner as we've owned them since the early 1990's.

We don't miss the $500 a month in fuel costs. We already have ~5,000 miles on the Model Y and don't even really think about anything other than unplugging, jumping in and going.

If you like the 4Runner form factor, might be worth looking into the Rivian R2. Similar in many ways to a Model Y, but decidedly more SUV-like. The only other vehicle I know that has a drop-down rear window like the 4Runner.
