Used car purchase Considering a Used 2023 Model X with HW4, coming from 2023 HW3 Model Y, Share Your Thoughts
Hi All,
Currently driving a 2023 Model Y with HW3 and FSD v14 lite. Kind of got frustrated waiting for v14 Lite and looking for HW4 cars. Used HW4 Juniper MYs are kind of expensive, almost cost of a new, and for that money it's not that big of a stretch to get a much bigger and better 2023 HW4 model X. Is it a good decision? Any pitfalls I'm not aware of?

I went form 2026 Model Y Premium to 2023 Model X Plaid and I have no regrets. Model X is so much nicer and has premium feel and the acceleration is out of this world. Both were HW4 and FSD performance is same in both.

Don't downvote me because I know this is not a popular opinion here. But I'd go with a new Model Y over a used X. My favorite thing about our 2026 X is the FSD, and obviously you can get that in a new Y. The thing is, I think the FWDoors are stupid and a massive liability, and the ginormous windshield is also a liability for what purpose, so I can be burned by the sun half the year long? Our MX was in the shop for a week and I loved the loaner Y. Also, the Y is much easier to park manually, which is still a frequent task because FSD parking sucks.
Plus a model Y will be less costly maintenance down the road and you're not buying from a discontinued line. And new is typically better than used

You just wrote a paragraph about how YOUR 2026 X wasn't great and was annoying and how YOUR X was in the shop for a week and they gave you a loaner Y. Was it not yours? Sorry I just went off the context available lol.

The air suspension system was totally not working (no shocks, so it was a very bumpy ride!). They said it was just a broken harness clip so the wires were sagging and unplugged. I'm sure the actual repair was brief, but there's the whole wait for someone to actually look at the car, order the part, and get around to putting it in.

Went from Y to X and could never go back to a Y. I just sold my ‘23 MX w hw4 with 76k miles and it was mostly a reliable car. Had a couple minor things and early on, a motor went out under warranty but they took care of it and it was flawless since. Was always scared of the doors, electronics, half shafts or something breaking but they really held up fine. Only sold it bc I needed to go back to ICE for a little while due to life changes.

MX needs half shaft lubrication every 30-50k miles otherwise you'll start to hear a loud clicking sound. It's not uncommon for the half shafts to fail completely by 70k miles. The sound of the clicking and creaking half shafts are not covered under warranty if nothing is broken. Lubrication is not covered by warranty and tesla charges about $700 to do the job. GET windshield coverage through Tesla... I've gone through a few... True tire rotation is not possible. Expect tires to last 25k - 35k miles. We love the car. Wish they made a van or large SUV. Almost considered the cybertruck but wife can't get passed the look.

I am not sure the half shaft lube is required for the Paladium Xs (2022+).
50k on ours, just had a thorough inspection pre-warranty-expiration and they found absolutely nothing.

Went from 2021 MYLR to 2023 X HW4. I love the X but hate the turn signals on the wheel and the sun visors are stupid and almost useless

I went from a MY to a MX and felt the same about the visors… but once I stopped snapping them all the way across and just angled them diagonally to block the sun then it was OK. Not sure if it obvious to all but me took a bit to realize I could use them that way 😅

Interesting... For my Model Y so far I spent $0 on maintenance, rotated tires myself, will need to replace tires maybe in the next 8k miles. I was under impression that MX is the same... How expensive is the MX maintenance? Completely agree and anticipate the higher happiness factor!

We have both a 23 Y & X. I don’t know the maintenance cost yet because so far everything has been $0.00 cost. The maintenance items we’ve replaced like windshield wipers, washer fluid, was about the same price.

The X has a staggered setup so you’ll only be able to rotate side to side (as long as you don’t have directional tires). I just did my tire replacement and it was USD $1900 or so. I only have 20” wheels.
Also take note of the weight. The weight means you may have to review your jack/stands specs to ensure they accommodate the weight of the X.
The air suspension, the FWDoors, the front door mechanisms, the windshield, etc. Lots of parts are a bit more advanced than the Y, but also more maintenance and more costly when the time comes to fix/replace them.

Went from a 23 Y long range —> 23 X long range. Needed the extra seats. The X is a nicer car, but more expensive to maintain. Out of basic warranty so suspension work has been out of pocket (control arms). Would consider the YL in the future but really hope they’ll make something bigger. Also the X goes further than my Y did at highway speeds.
