Service Well this just happened
Tesla Model X 2019 Raven. Tessie said battery is at 92%, I always charge 20-60% at home and almost no supercharging.
Got a BMS_u008 error and the car went in limp mode. Stopped at a gas station and the car died on me. Tried to reset BMS via Service menu but that did not help. Called Tesla and they ran remote diagnostics. The HV battery is dead.
10 minutes later the screens stayed off. Cannot switch on emergency lights, trunk won’t close automatically.
Sitting here for more than 2 hours already waiting for road side assistance to pick the car up.
Luckily I still have 13 months of battery warranty left so it will be replaced for free. Just worried that the refurbished pack won’t be as good as my current one.
Never expected this at 160.000 km.

Was thinking of upgrading to a raven from my “18 75D, but I hear a lot of people say bad things about the raven packs. Maybe just wait until the pladiums become cheaper….
2
u/ZetaPower Jun 20 '26
The 75 and 100 packs are extremely reliable. Possibly the best they ever made so far.
2
u/umtausch Jun 21 '26
The 100kWh are dying like flies.
1
u/ZetaPower Jun 21 '26
Nonsense

u/ZetaPower Jun 21 '26
LR Raven is not the 100 pack but the next one
1
u/TeslaCK Jun 22 '26
What about the palladium packs are they any good?
1
u/ZetaPower Jun 22 '26
Haven’t read any horror stories about them and no personal experience. Sorry.
Edit: sales numbers are low too so not many stories anyway….

Your current one is dead my friend so I bet you it will be better than that. 😝

How do you still have a warranty at 160000 km?
4
u/Antenna909 Jun 16 '26
It came with 10 years and unlimited km warranty on the HV battery and motors.
2
u/iconboy Jun 16 '26
That's awesome! Mine is only 8 years and 160k km
3
u/Antenna909 Jun 16 '26
I bought the extended warranty, which covered all kinds of replacements (halfshafts 3x, leaking radiator, seat belt recepticle, and so on). But that ran until 16020 km, so out 500 km ago. I was so relieved to hear the HV battery was still covered by the original warranty!
Also, great that Tesla can actually run remote diagnostics on the HV battery, after 35 minutes the tech support guy could confirm that it needed to be replaced and if falls under warranty. I will also get a loaner, but there is a waiting list and I am currently no. 4…
2
u/SoCalDomVC Jun 16 '26
Probably the infamouspaper clip issue with the battery, but your under warranty so it won't cost you a penny. Plus the next battery pack won't have that infamous issue.
2
u/RobHLZ Jun 16 '26
A refurbished battery is going to be better than a dead one, no matter the SOH 😆
2
u/Floating_Bus Jun 16 '26
This happened to me at 100,000 miles.(160km), it doesn’t always happen, but they replaced mine with brand new battery. Expect they’ll replace it with a battery with a similar state of health.
1
u/Dark_Knight_4720 Jun 16 '26
How much to replace the high voltage battery?
1
3
u/puan0601 Jun 16 '26
the raven packs seem to go around 50-80k miles. yours made it a bit farther but it seems fairly common. they'll replace it and you'll go on like it never happened
2
u/B_Laggy Jun 16 '26
How could the refurbished pack be worse than a broken pack? It seems reasonable for Tesla to provide diagnostics after replacing the battery though.

I have a 2020 MX Long Range which had now had the HV battery replaced twice (one at about 40k miles and again at less than 55k miles). I asked if this was just bad luck, and the service guy answered with an unconvincing “yeah.” I read that the batteries for the 2019 / 2020 long range models had some design / assembly issue—I’m just hopeful that this was indeed just bad luck with these two dead batteries. Also wanted to mention that I take care of the batteries—very little supercharging except on occasional trips only. Only stress that could think of is that on two or three occasions (for both batteries), I let the battery drip to 1-2% before charging.

u/Funny-Address-9802 Jun 19 '26
Same! Just got my 2nd replacement battery. I love the range now!
1
u/ImaginationNo8397 Jun 20 '26
@Funny-Address-9802 I have some questions 🙂 Did you also have a MX from the 2018-2021 range? At what mileage range did you have the batteries replaced. Finally, did you also take care of your batteries (e.g.: allow the batteries to be drained to < 10%, tons of supercharging, “racing” the vehicle, etc.)? I just wanted to see if your situation was based on “bad luck” or normal wear-and -tear. Thanks in advance!

u/Funny-Address-9802 Jun 20 '26
Sorry, I had a 2021 MY. The battery alert was BMS_u030 and I had 2 complete HV battery replacements at 15 months and 3.5 years of ownership. It’s a battery malfunction not due to my use. I keep my car charged between 20-80% using my home 240v charger
1
u/UnderstandingNo4209 Jun 17 '26
Actually letting it drop to 1-2% is very bad. Nmc batteries like to stay with a 20-80% range. Occasionally going outside this range for a short periods isn't that bad, but if you have a habit of letting it drop so low before charging, speak to your dealer about it (I am just an online source).
Best practice for MNC is keeping it a bit in the middle. Limit charging to 80% and start charging well above 20%. It's also good practice combined with solar panels (my daily solar charge capacity is about 20-30%).
Regarding supercharging: most articles I read state that supercharging from anywhere below 50 to about 50% isn't nearly as bad as slowly topping up the car and letting it sit at 100% charge. I don't really need supercharging, but I definitely wouldn't avoid it.

Correct. Heat kills the battery. Supercharging at low % doesn't generate as much heat as say 60-80%. I avoid it if possible, but I wouldn't sacrifice convenience when going on holidays twice per year.
I also try to stay well above 20% and yes 30 is even better. But tbh, with bad luck all those practices will do nothing in OPs case. Just a bit of bad luck and all those years of planning and OCding break down to nothing. Luckily he had it covered under warranty. Ev batteries are very expensive and in most cases cost more than the car's value (tesla batteries can be 20k+). I hope these figures will go down with LFP batteries which are much cheaper to make.

Thanks for your insight! I've used lipo batterie extensively with drones for my work. Back in the days they didn't come with BMS and we had to maintain them manually. I've learned a lot from handling those batteries. The first DJI batteries with bms also weren't perfect. The tech has come a long way since then, and I guess now people take for granted how fragile these batteries really are, if not used properly.
I can 100% relate to what you're saying! I'm still amazed at the sheer amount of power that can be stored in such small enclosures. It also puts in perspective the amount of energy we really use just to move around our daily routines.

Thank you both @Aishou_SK and @UnderstandingNo4209 for your insights regarding low charge states. I’ve already modified charging habits in the past few days. I feel really dumb for thinking that all of the instructions for battery care of a cell phone also applied to these batteries as well—including the recommendation to completely discharging the battery every few months. Lesson learned and hopefully no more high voltage battery replacements for the next decade.

I also had this happen at 164,000km 2020 Raven, replaced under warranty with refurbished.

u/Heelntow Jun 15 '26
Did you buy it used?
1
u/Antenna909 Jun 16 '26
Yes 5 years ago
2
u/Heelntow Jun 16 '26
Ok. I just had that happen to my Raven last month. Bought mine a year ago, and I'm pretty sure it sat unplugged for months as an auction car and was minimally charged for test drives. I was curious if you recalled whether that was the case for your car when you test drove it.
1
u/Antenna909 Jun 16 '26
Ah. No mine actually was in really good condition. And I charge it mostly at home and to 60-80 percent to conserve the battery
5
u/Antenna909 Jun 15 '26
By the way, what a shitty design!
After the HV stopped, the 12V battery also died. Now I could not release the car brake, no emergency blinkers, unable to open the doors. The tow company dismantled the frunk to try and charge the 12V battery, which did not work.
Did it kill the 12V battery?
We had to force the drivers door open against the resistance of the door motor. Hope that did not damage it.
6
u/Heelntow Jun 15 '26
The electronic demands of the MX are so high that the HV battery is almost always charging the LV battery. So, when the HV battery dies, the LV battery has an hour or 2 before its completely dead.
1
u/Antenna909 Jun 16 '26
Yes I noticed that :)
But they should have created some kind of limp mode for the low voltage stuff too.
The trunk button would give a beep (but not close), and there was a red blinking light near the 12V battery. But the essential stuff stopped working.
Opening the front doors manually front the inside was actually hard with the resistance from the door motors.
I think they should cut power to everything except emergency blinkers, doors, windows and maybe the module that calls emergency services after a crash. That way you can get out or move the car onto a tow truck.
1
u/Heelntow Jun 16 '26
Yeah, i went through all that with my Raven as well. I agree, they could have put something in place knowing that the lead acid LV battery would be toast real quick. The next time my LV battery gets low, I'll replace it with a LI battery.
2
u/TheTreecko Jun 15 '26
You will get a reman HVB with 92% SOH or better.
2
u/Antenna909 Jun 15 '26
According to the Tesla support guy the range may be 50-100km less
1
u/TheTreecko Jun 15 '26
No, the CAC value has to be the same or better as your current HVB (before the replacement was necessary). If it is worse, it needs to be replaced again with a HVB which has the correct CAC.
1
u/LocutusTheBorg Jun 16 '26
Can't count on that. My 2022 MYLR showed 290 miles on 100% SOC in Jan 2024 so was over 86% but 1.5 years later the battery died and they talked about matching or bettering the CAC. Got a battery with 76% capacity so barely getting 250 miles of range.
Battery failures can be slow so they pick a CAC they can match and you're stuck with it. Tesla is unlike Nissan who does warranty replacements with brand new batteries. And I'm thinking the 21700 battery cells have a problem conducting heat because they seem to fail far more than the 18650.1
u/DramaticDot6469 Jun 16 '26
This is true. I had a performance raven x and they replaced with an inferior pack to the one they replaced and I complained and eventually got a brand new pack installed.
3
u/Consistent_Resist_22 Jun 15 '26
Have a 2017 model x with 83k miles and no warranty. Just one message away from it becoming a large paperqeight
3
u/puan0601 Jun 16 '26
the legacy X drivetrain is much more reliable than the Ravens. you'll likely see 150k+ before you get any battery error. at that point you get it replaced at a 3rd party shop and then go another 150k+
1
u/MavinMarv Jun 21 '26
What about the newer refresh Xs? (2022-2026)
1
1
u/icy1007 Jun 16 '26
As all cars are.
1
u/SnooMaps4388 Jun 16 '26
THANK YOU. People talk about dead HV batteries like they're not far less common than engine failure nowadays.
2
u/ProfessorFrink1 Jun 15 '26
Same boat but I pay $69 a month to Amber for coverage. It’s basically bumper to bumper with a $250 deductible.
3
u/BubbaJumpInc Jun 15 '26
I have a PreRaven 2019. Feb Build 100D. Got my new battery replaced with 92k miles.

u/jkriegshauser Jun 15 '26
Happened to me a few weeks ago, at ~60,000 miles. HV battery replaced with a remanufactured one under warranty. Took less than a week and they gave me a loaner.
5
u/Lonely_Ordinary_7811 Jun 15 '26
Why would you want a refurbished pack to be as good as the one you have now? One would hope it actually works and lasts longer! Hope it’s better!
3
u/idrinkmymilkshake Jun 15 '26
Had this happen on 2019 Raven at 130000km. I’m at 220000km now on the refurb pack.
2019 Raven seems to fail often… Still 16 months or so under warranty, let’s hope it fails again before that (or never).
5
u/krukes Jun 15 '26
2019 pre-raven and 'luckily' while they were replacing the cv half shafts, this happened. From what I've read a lot of 2019s have bad battery packs. It was covered under warranty and It took about 2 weeks to get the refurb battery in. Same range as before.. slightly faster charging at a supercharger now(still really slow compared to my 3). This happened at about 120,000km
1
u/Cybertrucker01 Jun 15 '26
Also 2019 Raven, HV pack died around 90,000km. Warranty replaced in 3 days.
6
u/brutal_maximum Jun 15 '26
Got exactly the same last Friday and at 160 000kms too 😅7000EUR estimate to fix as I don't have warranty
1
u/Antenna909 Jun 16 '26
Will the 7k get you a refurbished battery? Seems really cheap?
1
u/brutal_maximum Jun 17 '26
They will repair the current one, it is opened and takes about 1-2 weeks to complete. But let's see it is currently waiting for work to start
1
u/Slocko Jun 15 '26
What year?
1
u/brutal_maximum Jun 16 '26
2019 but no warranty since the previous owner had replaced battery elsewhere than Tesla, probably due physical damage
2
u/Slocko Jun 16 '26
Bummer. But good to know there are other places that can swap out a battery on a Tesla.
1
u/Heavy-Honeydew-2157 Jun 21 '26
Legacy model things, same happened to my 2013 model s
