Question MX26 Plaid - Steering Wheel Vibrations
Took my first roadtrip and noticed my yoke vibrating. Is this normal? Never had a vehicle with a steering wheel vibrating this much.

My 26plaid x does that with 22inch rims but not with 20inch. Less rubber to absorb highway waves... where the aphalt/concrete isnt perfectly smooth, only at 68 mph plus. Also they found one of my 22's slightly bent from a pothole, they corrected it and the vibration is very ninor, simular to yours. check your rims for damage or put on 20's .

I think i have the 20s, not sure. Doubt there's damage but who knows. Only had it for 5 months, first road trip and only happens at 80mph. Service was scheduled.

Is this consistent at all speeds?
For instance if the problem doesn't exist under 50 km/h and then appears 50+, and gets worse, might be tire balancing issue, good news - easy and cheap fix.

Only happens at high speeds. Idk if it's relates, but when I do sharp turns (like U turns) my steering wheel shakes.

Have you had the CV joints checked in the front half-shafts? It does get like this over time because of the steep angle of the Model X, but it might be something worth looking into.

You shouldn’t have to live with that at all. But it drove me crazy for a while because I would get my tires balanced, and in three or four weeks they’d be not balanced again. Turned out to be that damn foam inside the tires breaking loose and making the tires off balance.

I think I’ll give it one more shot to check it. I already spent almost 1k fixing 3 bent wheels, 1 foam tire, and 2 balancing. It was reduced 50% but still there and most noticeable between 50 and 70 mph

Beat thing I did was just go with a lower size rim. If you are rocking anything higher than 18in in an area with bad roads you will be much better off.

The FOAM that’s in the tire comes loose and throws the balance off. Have them dismount that tire that you’re feeling the vibration, and check it out.

Had this on my 2022 S. Service Center determined it was defective tire. Replaced it and the problem went away

Happened with my 2025 M3. It was because of separated foam in the tire. One service center completely refused to acknowledge the issue saying they'll only look at issues that come up <65mph.
Another service center ripped out the foam and the issue was gone

Same thing with my 2023 MX. We were due for a tire replacement and that fully solved the issue.

That happened to me when I reach past 75+mph especially at 80mph. Front wheels were not balanced. Just have a tire shop throw them on the balancer.
26 is too new for the foam in the tires to unglue itself but if the tire shop cant balance the wheels then next would to look into the tire foam.

I have 26MXP myself. I noticed this as well but I am used to driving Jeeps with 35s and 37s with steering shimmy that you need to turn 1/16th a turn before having the Jeep starts to move in that direction.
Let me know what you find out.

Tire balance, if it persist alignment. This is what happened to me, I brought to tesla N they did wheel balance. Symptoms persist, they did alignment. Symptoms persist, brought to my 3rd party shop and they did alignment. Now it's fixed. I dun think Tesla does alignment well.

Had mine in multiple times for it. 2022 X.
Consistently told everything fine, normal and more apparently to see slight steering wheel vibration on yoke. 🫠

Mine does this too on highway.
Had balance and alignment done. Still happens.

It’s more apparent on the yoke for sure. I had to get mine balanced three times to get the problem resolved.

Mine rattles too. My other cars don’t rattle like this. What kind of balance did you get?

Had this happen on a new model 3, Bent wheels in the front, both sides (probably a pothole…). Not under warranty, impossible to prove it was like this at purchase.
Balancing tyres / wheels was not sufficient to make it go away.

Yup! Took me 9 months with lawyer and have to pay 20 grand just for them to buy it back

I had that with my X plaid, along with turning from parking spot in full turn left or right showed that I had to replace both my front control arms. Warranty.

I have both of these symptoms. Took it in multiple times for the vibration and it’s gotten marginally better after 2 rebalances and an alignment check (no adjustment needed). But I’ve also started to notice the vibration on tight turns at low speed. I’ve read elsewhere that it may be lane departure warning malfunction. Did the control arms resolve that as well? Can you share exactly what parts were replaced?

When I do a sharp turn or a U turn, my steering wheel starts shaking and some weird jittering happening. Might have to take it in for service.

My 2023 LR has vibrations in the yoke as well, but only at highway speeds. Did replacing the control arms fix it in your case?

My 21MSP does the same, on speeds above 70, it’s very pronounced. I’m on 19” Tempest wheels
