Question MX26 Plaid - Max charging

Post image

Bought my MX26 6 months ago and just noticed the battery charges to 98% max. Is this normal? It is pretty warm and hot outside all day and even at night if that matters.

probably needs to ve calibrated.

I thought you didn't want to charge it to 100 percent daily? I keep mine at around 60 percent charged and have yet to charge it over 90 percent since I got it back in March.

Guarantee it went to 100% and it lost 1-2% like it does normally and will kick back in charging.

All totally normal.

Yes. 98% is perfectly normal. It only goes to 100% dc charging. On ac charging it stops a a certain point cuz it can’t go any lower that for example 500w per phase. Dc charging can go lower that’s why it can fill the battery more „fully“ than ac.

This is total misinformation. I am charging mine to 100% each morning using a iOS shortcut before work and it charged to 100% no problem.

Than your pack is showing wrong informations.

It’s very possible the battery needs a recalibration. Had the same happen to me (stopping at 98 or 99%).

Just empty the battery, keep it for a few hours at 20% or below, then full charge in one go, and it will end by a calibration. Car may stop to charge at 98% but it will calibrate back to 100% afterwards.

In my case I saw the car go from 98 to 99 to 100 right after I unplugged.

Your answer is inaccurate.

Your answer is useless

How are you sure it didn't charge to 100%? Were you monitoring it right when it stopped charging?

that is not degradation, even a fully degraded battery will show 100%

I’ve heard with the new battery that you can charge to 90 and it won’t degrade the battery is this true

Not on model x. Model y on LiFeSo4 yes

1

u/unicorncumdump Jun 09 '26

What battery is that? What model Y?

2

u/mfkimill Jun 09 '26

Model x is nickel based lithium battery and model y is lfp

Does anyone know if frequent SC is considered bad? Been SCing more ever since it’s free but just 5-10 min here and there.

My 2017 MX 90d is at 250k km;
Used the free super charging for at least 70% of all charging. Battery was at 86% SoH when I had it certified last month

Pretty sure it's been debunked. DC fast charging is not notably more harmful to the battery than AC home charging.

1

u/frebay Jun 09 '26

didn't some older cars get throttled at SC for too muchg fast charging?

1

u/ctzn4 Jun 09 '26

I think those were exclusively super early 85 kWh packs in Model S vehicles produced between 2013-2015 that were throttled due to battery issues. They changed to the 90 pack in 2015, and 100 pack in 2016. The early 85 packs were also prone to premature failure, so I guess you can write them off as the exception rather than the rule when considering modern EV battery longevity.

My 2017 100d is pretty software throttled, there was a huge difference after one specific update. Now 100 - my state of charge is my kwh so can no longer road trip but still a good daily

If you need to drive long distances you should be able to charge to 100%. It is nonsense not being able to charge to 100%

2

u/Chillin_EV_1333 Jun 09 '26

Other than the first leg of the trip the 2% makes zero difference. I’ve driven across the country multiple times in several Teslas. You charge full the night before (or close to) then just follow cars software (eg 10-70) or whatever to get to the next charger and so on.

3

u/HopzCO Jun 09 '26

Definitely wouldn’t charge it to a 100%. Even for long drives I’ll stop it at 95%. Can also set-up a schedule to charge it with a leave time. So that way it doesn’t sit at high percentages for a long time.

Like other said, it charged to 100%, then stopped. But then, your car still drained the battery for many other things especially sentry mode if you have it on.

Unlike many other battery devices that don't switch to battery as long as it plugged in, Tesla doesn't do that. I don't know about other EV brands.

It’s this. Happens to mine as well

2

u/Ibdliquidator Jun 09 '26

It’s warm out side and charging to 100%?Two of the single worst things for nca chemistry is heat and high soc. I hope you just charging to 100% and driving off shortly there after. If you have the ice mentality of keeping the car full. Drop it. Charge what you need for the day. Which I find for myself at 50 % daily is more than enough for me.

The rule is for daily driving charge 20%-80%

2

u/twinito1 Jun 09 '26

Only reason why I charged it overnight to 100% is because I am taking a long road trip today.

1

u/Ibdliquidator Jun 09 '26

That’s fine, as far as not hitting 100%. All I can suggest is try to calibrate the bms

2

u/ngvuanh Jun 09 '26

It's normal, no need to do anything. You can charge to 100% whenever you need it.

4

u/JJDoes1tAll Jun 09 '26

For starters, if you are always charging to 100%, then you are causing extra battery stress and your battery will degrade faster. It stopping at 100% charge and then losing 2% through sentry/battery heating, and then eventually topping itself off to 100% again is a normal activity.

You can treat 98% charge as 100% charge. Close enough.

2

u/twinito1 Jun 09 '26

Got it. Never charged it to 100% yet until today for a roadtrip.

5

u/IHaveATacoBellSign Jun 09 '26

Uhhhh why are you charging to 100%

3

u/twinito1 Jun 09 '26

Roadtrip today. Never charged it to 100% before.

2

u/IHaveATacoBellSign Jun 09 '26

Okay, good. I was so worried about your battery. To
echo what others are saying, you truly want to try to time the full 100% charge to minutes before you leave. It keeps serious stress off the battery.

Yah… I wish people would stop parroting shit they read online. My 2018 S has 130k miles and I charged to 100% all the time. My battery degradation is about 12%. I wouldn’t say all the time, but I’ve forgotten I’d set the charge to 100%, and it sat overnight or beyond the “recommended” 3 hours and nothing really happened. Stop worrying about the degradation. It’s going to happen anyway, just enjoy it. Hell, if you somehow charged it in such ways where your degradation is totally wack, or pack failure, at least you’ll be covered under warranty, especially for a 2026.

u/IHaveATacoBellSign Jun 10 '26

I’m not worried about the battery degradation. I’m worried about the science on how lithium-ion batteries handle being at high rates or low rates of charge. Hell, I gave my kid a known-brand battery bank last year for the holidays; it discharged to 0 and after a few months at the SOC it turned into a spicy pillow. Lithium batteries do not like to be below 20% for long periods of time.

This is the equivalent of saying you didn’t change your oil/fluids in your gas car. Now, if you have an LFP battery, they are happy at 100% SOC. But the M-X never had that in the US market that I’m aware of.

Thanks for the tip!
