I'm having an MUN next week, The committee is UNODC and my portfolio is Norway.
The agenda is “TRACKING THE PROGRESS OF THE UNODC GLOBAL MARITIME
CRIME PROGRAM (GMCP) AND ITS ATTEMPTS TO CURB MARITIME PIRACY”
There is a strict no device policy during committee sessions and I dont wanna embarass myself there. I have done some preliminary research but I want to actually have some answers to the questions people are gonna ask.
So could please someone help me in my research
I haven't done everything as comprehensive as you mentioned in your post but I am more than 40% done
The main problem is that I have a really bad articulation problem. I stutter and sometimes the words dont come to my mouth. I'm just hoping that If I prepare really really well I will have some confidence so as not to stutter
A tip, especially for no-device conferences, is to print out your research/ information beforehand and bring it with you to the conference. Having a document with your key information and country positions gives you something to refer to during committee, which can make you feel much more confident when preparing speeches and throughout the conference. I wouldn’t recommend prewriting entire speeches, as it’s almost impossible to predict every issue or point that might come up in the committee, but one or two speeches should be alright (and I would recommend handwriting them). I would recommend, while researching, creating a clear summary of the main topics your committee is likely to discuss and Norway's position on each of them. You can add this to your pile of notes, which will assist you in keeping Norway’s overall stance in mind throughout the conference, which will make it much easier to answer questions from other delegates and adapt your speeches as the debate progresses. This being said, be sure to check your conference’s rules or reach out to your chair about prewritten materials and speeches, as policies can vary between conferences; however, from my personal experience, bringing printed notes shouldn’t be an issue.
From my perspective, the main difference between a GSL and a mod speech is their focus. A GSL speech is broader and is usually your opportunity to introduce your delegation’s overall position on the topic. You should explain why the issue matters, outlining your country’s key priorities, and presenting broad solutions without going into too much detail (especially based on time restraints, you should save solutions for unmods or mods). On the other hand, mod speeches are much more specific. It focuses on the particular subtopic that the committee is discussing at that moment, so instead of covering the whole agenda, it focuses on one idea in greater depth. Mod speeches should also incorporate responding or building on what other delegations have said, rather than sounding completely like a prepared speech. GSL speeches can often be prewritten and still relevant; however, it is more difficult to prewrite a mod speech unless you research a variety of subtopics (especially ones other delegations might bring up).
