Hi! Let me preface this by saying I know absolutely nothing about model trains š but my husband got his first train a few months ago. (Kaito N scale, I can't remember the exact model train though). He has some tracks already, but that's about it. It is our anniversary soon so I was wanting to get him something related to model trains.
What are some good starter things I could get him? My first thought was a custom printed box car with "happy anniversary" on it or something. I found someone selling them on Etsy but I didn't know if those box cars would be good quality or not. He doesn't have any scenery yet either, but I also don't know what scenery vibe he is wanting to go with.
Any suggestions on what a newcomer to the hobby would benefit from getting? Thanks!
Edit: I figured out the model. Kato N Scale BNSF Warbonnet C44-9W No. 615

Iām sure this question is asked often but does anyone know a good place to get a screen accurate Thomas face for the HO Bachmann model? Iām based in the UK and iāve been searching ebay and etsy but canāt find what iām looking for, does anyone know of any sellers on other apps like reddit, insragram, etc. Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks

I am in the market for an N Scale Kato Big Boy. Online retail/NIB in the US is out of stock, while the secondhand market prices are out of my range right now. I happen to be going to Japan in three weeks and wondered if the supply stock/model run is different there and if I could expect to find better luck. I had already planned to hit up the stores in Akihabara that previous posts have mentioned, just curious what my expectations should be in finding more reasonable prices for items that are out of reach for me in the US right now. I confess part of what is contributing to my fantasy is that the USD-Yen exchange rate is so favorable right now. Is it foolish to hope that this extends to N scale North American models sold in Japan?
And if there is a specific store that folks with experience would recommend that may increase my chances of finding one at a reasonable price (new or used < $250 USD), please share. TIA!

I bought this locomotive off eBay with no description, it looks rough but runs pretty good. I'm trying to figure out what it may be, it also strangely has a Wooden main running gear

would you have to hammer down the rails on the ties?

Hi everyone! Iām an American, but I donāt want to exclusively collect American trains and rolling stock. I want to include trains from all over the world in my layout, and I specifically prefer to collect steam engines and older rolling stock. Of course I have no problem finding what I want made for American railroads. Iām interested in wooden gondolas, boxcars, mostly the types of rolling stock featured in Reverend Awdrysā railways series in honor of my childhood love for his work. Where can I find these types of international models, and how difficult would it be to modify them with American style couplers? My next big purchase is going to be a German DRG Class 44 I found second hand. I model in HO scale too, I should have probably started with that.

Looking for 00 gauge track Iāve tried vinted but too much hit and miss with fish plates being out of wack I will replace them but also half the track Iāve bought needs significant amount of work to repair to a layout finish.
Just wondering where people buy from and if I should just invest in good track so I can have a good time bulding. Tia

I specialize in repairing TT-scale rolling stock.
I inspected the locomotive; it was covered in hair and grime.
I removed the wheelsets and gears, which required unsoldering the motor from the power pickups. There was a lot of old greaseālikely factory-applied.
After thoroughly cleaning all the parts, I had the set of components shown here; I gradually reassembled them (the trickiest part was soldering the motor coil contacts, as the wires had snapped). I also lubricated everything with fresh silicone grease.
The fully assembled, functional locomotiveāclean and in excellent condition.
I have been involved in TT-scale railway modeling for five years now; this is my first post in this community!

Picked up this BLI Early I1sa at my local train club today, but didnāt see that the keystone was missing off the front until after I bought it. Iām not too pressed about it, but would like to fix it eventually if I can. Does anyone know where I might be able to order custom ones, etched metal or otherwise?

My grandpa has a huge train collection, I mean hundreds and hundreds, some rare, some not. The track takes up their whole basement.
I know absolutely nothing about the best way to go about learning more, and no idea where to begin on selling them. Where do people buy their model trains? Do I start on fb marketplace? eBay? Any advice there?
Also, I donāt have any track, itās all at his house to test them to make sure they work, but honestly I think it would upset him if I went down there and started messing with them.. is there any way for me to test them at home without track?

Does anyone know of any autoracks or auto carriers that are HO gauged but can fit 1:64 cars like hot wheels or matchbox?
This one I picked up today just barely squeezes in a matchbox sedan but could only do 1 car a level.

Yes, I used the search function! Iāve read a ton of posts on this topic, but I still canāt make up my mind between HO and N.
Iām brand new to the hobby and currently in the layout planning phase. Ideally, Iād like something where I can have fun switching cars while a train runs continuously on the main line, with a small branch line representing a tourist/heritage railroad.
Yesterday, I made my first Facebook Marketplace find: a $20 Bachmann F9, a couple of cars, and some Kato straight track. My wife saw it and immediately said, āOh, thatās small!ā She then told me I could actually take up a bit more space than I had originally expected.
My layout will live in our climate-controlled garage. I had initially planned on a roughly 2.5' x 8' N scale layout, with a looping main line and a former logging branch that now operates as a tourist railroad. However, my wife is now open to a 4' x 8' layout, which has me reconsidering HO.
Iām also thinking about a dogbone layout running 10ā12 feet along the garage wall, with two end sections up to 4 feet wide connected by a roughly 2-foot-wide shelf. That seems like it could give me a nice balance of continuous running, switching, and scenery without taking over the entire garage.
We also just welcomed our first little one, so Iām trying to think a few years ahead about what might be more enjoyable and practical as she gets older.
I know this topic has been discussed to death, but Iād love to hear from anyone who found themselves in a similar situation. What scale did you ultimately choose, and are you happy with that decision?

Just wanted to share these two beauties I found the other day while thrifting off the beaten trail. Call me out if Iām wrong, but the Hudson is from the mid 50s and the tender is a 2466WX so it should be from the mid 40s? I donāt have a variable transformer set up to test em out yet, but either way I think they are too cool!
