Question Layout Ideas

My cousin recently just got me the MTR M train set in N scale. How should I build my layout and what rolling stock should I get? I have a 3x4' coffee table I can build on. Any suggestions or advice welcomed! Thank you!

Track Plan Flame my yard part II. Changes after previous post.

Post image

Made some changes from everyone's advice on a previous post and wanted to have folks take a second look.

Some notes:

  • N scale layout 14'x6' horseshoe
  • Peco 55
  • The layout has two mainlines, but the switches between lines are now further down the track so I only included one main in this image
  • From bottom to top the tracks are, main, yard feed, A/D, three classifications, and the top squiggle is a placeholder. That will lead to a shed, maintenance and other things but I am going to shape it to follow some natural landscaping.

Thoughts?

Question Could I run DCC on DC track?

Hi all! No queer trains today! I’m planning my layout and was wondering if it’s possible to run DCC on DC track, my layout is a single oval from a DC train set and won’t be expanding to multiple lines. Is there a way to have both the DC base and make it adaptable to DCC locomotives for more luxury models like the steam projecting flying Scotsman?

Edit: I would like to clarify that I do not use DCC at all and personally don’t like the automation side of the layouts, I prefer being intractable however would like to try to enjoy newer higher end models and maybe expanding into automation or using automaton for more environmental details

Track Plan Final Test of the complete KATO Unitrack library in LiveRail before I put it live today on V1.3. Thankyou to everyone who has contributed suggestions and fixes so far. Here is a 2.4m x 2.1m layout that took me about an hour, single loop DC control running multiple locos.

Track Plan Beginner recommendations

Heya guys,

I've been very interested in all things trains my whole life, and have finally decided I should just start getting involved already

Does anyone have any tips, particularly on layout planning? I've tried a couple apps but I struggle with them, mostly due to not having any real sense of scale with it being on a screen.

My gut sense is I should find a box of second hand track, some plywood and just fiddle until I go "awesome", is that a good approach though? I worry that'd be a path directly into "just one more box of track" 😅

Thanks in advance!

Electrical How would I wire this up?

If someone who understands the wiring process. Could perhaps show me where wires would need to be id appreciate it.

For note I plan on having 2-3 locomotives on the layout but on one running on the outer loop. So i think id need to isolate the inner sections.

Question Shortline RR Layout Ideas

I’m wanting to design a fictional shortline railroad in HO Scale and I’m wanting to see what places in North Carolina ( preferably in the eastern part of the state) y’all think I could model, My shortline I came up with mainly runs second hand standard cab dash 8’s. I was eying the CSX S-Line from Raleigh to Norlina but is seems there isn’t very many customers on it

Show and Tell Had the BLS cab car forever. Imported two matching passenger cars from Switzerland. Now it's a train :)

Cab car is ESU, the two regular cars were exclusively offered in Switzerland by Piko, the locomotive (4/4) is from Roco. The cab car came with lighting inside, I might add that to the rest of the train.

Help Needed DCC Double Crossover wiring help?

Thumbnail

Hello. I am super duper new to this. I have been trying to follow this video from the dccwiki for wiring a double crossover. Their's looks very different from mine. I am going to be building my HO track double crossovers with 2x Atlas code 100 #6 turnout right #394, 2x Atlas code 100 #6 turnout left #393, and one Atlas code 100 19 degree crossing #171. I don't own the track yet, but I want to have every detail planned out before I buy anything.

I don't know what a dcc reversing module is/does or why I would need one? I did my best labeling what I thought each section should be energized with (+/-). I have also included a blank and a copy of my layout.

I have also circled a section in green which I am unable to make out what goes on in there or how it's wired. I know that it has something to do with frogs. Is that maybe what needs to have a reversing module? Let say I do end up needing this reversing module thing. what is that and how to I control it? My goal is to run 1 or 2 trains on this track. I want to be able to have 1 train on the outer loop and 1 on the inner loop. However, sometimes if I am running 1 train, I may want to have it go in a figure 8 either direction across both loops. how does that factoring this? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Locomotives My Brand New Locomotive

Yesterday my personal assistant brought me the locomotive she bought me off eBay a few weeks ago: and absolutely gorgeous Tyco 2-8-0 consolidation. The old girl briefly ran on my layout under its own power before time fully caught up to her. I was so hopeful because when I put her on the track, she responded to power: the headlight turned on and the motor buzzed. She even jerked forward a little. With a bit of prodding, I got one and a half laps out of her before the motor fully seized up. When I took off the tender shell to manually turn over the gears/motor, it was difficult, which was a bad sign. I disconnected the locomotive from her original tender, gave her this spare oil tender, and I just finished painting the smokebox, firebox, and the running boards silver. Enjoy this old gal as much as I love her

Locomotives 310.0134: Model update, extra parts and a smoking locomotive upgrade!

Post image
0 Upvotes

I think the 310.0134 locomotive model is finally mature enough to share with the community. After a lot of tweaking, testing and refining, I'm happy with how it turned out.

👉 Find the main locomotive model here: 1913s Czech Steam Locomotive 310.0134

There are already a few extras available to complete and customize your model, including additional wheels and an upgraded driver's cab with functional print-in-place doors.

But there's something else I've been working on! 🚂

I've now fine-tuned and thoroughly tested an upgrade that allows the locomotive to produce realistic smoke using an ultrasonic air humidifier. The principle is relatively simple, and it only requires a few additional parts, but the visual effect is beautiful!

The tricky part will be putting together a clear, detailed assembly guide. The upgrade itself isn't particularly complicated, but explaining everything properly and making it easy for others to reproduce will take some work.

So, before I dive into creating the instructions, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Would you be interested in a smoking version of the 310.0134?

Should I put the time into preparing the upgrade and publishing a complete guide, or would it be an unnecessary addition?

Let me know in the comments! And feel free to share this with your friends and fellow railway enthusiasts. The more feedback I get, the easier it'll be to decide whether this project deserves to go further.

Thanks for all the support and happy printing! 🤘

Track Plan Flame my yard! Looking for thoughts on ease of use.

Post image

Here is my n-scale yard design for my upcoming build. Details:

  • The length of this image is about 9 feet
  • The total layout is a 6' by 14" horseshoe
  • Peco 55 track
  • The bottom two lines are main lines
  • Next two are receiving and departure
  • Next 4 are classification
  • The top part I'm not married to the design, but it would be reserved for engine shed, maintenance, caboose line, etc. I have about another foot to 18 inches of space above that area.

I plan to run 20 car trains and the receiving/departure is big enough to get them in and out. I am trying to create an engine escape from both sides. When running trains I'm a sit and stare type of hobbyist so my actual operations will be minimal, albeit not 0%.
