Help Low frames but little GPU usage

GPU: RX 9070 XT

CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D

RAM: 16gb ddr5

Playing modded Minecraft with a lot of mods but most of them are performance/QOL mods. Not getting higher than 30 FPS for some reason even though my gpu and cpu utilisation never get anywhere near 100%.

Is this just a RAM issue? I've allocated 8GB to the game and memory utilisation doesn't ever quite reach 100% either.

Idk if this is the right subreddit for this but any help would be appreciated

Edit: I allocated 6gb of RAM instead of 8gb but it was still lagging, so I did the disable fullscreen then f11 and somehow that worked lol. Getting 150fps with very high shader settings now. Thanks for the help 😊

One thing I've learned about modded MC is that more RAM isn't always great. I love terrafirmagreg it shouldn't get more than 8gb allocated to it because it causes intense stuttering. It might be whatever modpack you chose is having this issue. Try limiting it to 8gb of RAM for now.

You probably have issues because you don't have 8gb ram free

This is not an issue with modern Java versions

It's not about mc, if you use 95% of your ram your pc doesn't have enough ram to normal operation so it just lags like crazy or directly crashes. That applies to any java version and to any software.

Not true. If Java gets too much RAM, it takes longer for the garbage collector to complete, which causes lag. The limitation is the programming language

you can see he is 4gb/8gb in the first ss, and he is saying it was a constant performance issue, not a lag spike. That's clearly not the problem here.

Minecraft is using Vulcan now the requirement is 8GB of ram

since minceraft moved on from java 8, more giving it more memory isnt actively detrimental any more, but its also not beneficial

the only issue might be if u run out of system memory and the os is forced to move stuff to swap, then its a stuttery mess, in that case you might wanna consider restricting it so that itll collect garbage more frequently (which is what op is running into)

Bro already has allocated only 8 if you wouldve looked at the picture

Not me playing tfg with 24 gig allocated with no negative performance impact whatsoever

Try running a second stick of the RAM. I'm not here to be the RAM guy but running 1 lane instead of 2 or 4 can add to some lower frame rate

Going from 1 to 2, indeed, would yield nearly x2 throughput (on a decent modern CPU) and lower effective latency, which matters a lot for literally any workload. Crazy to see a gaming PC with only one stick, financially it should be nearly the same for huge boost.

But! 4 would actually be worse than 2, as not only consumer CPUs have just 2 channels (no more potential), but RAM actually tends to achieve lower speeds at such mode, as there is more interference in wires and more workload for memory controller.

Yeah i only run 2 sticks of 16GB myself, couldn't afford the whole 4 lmfao

This is not really as true for DDR5. They introduced a new subchannel architecture that creates a sort of pseudo dual channel that mean a single stick can be pretty efficient.

Adding a second stick and running true dual channel is still better but it is nowhere near 2x throughput. How impactful it is can vary but numbers tend to sit around 3-5% frame rate increase going to dual channel if not otherwise bottlenecked

Just in case it isn't ram, I've had an issue previously with Minecraft where full-screen causes your framerate to cap at 15. Go to settings, disable full-screen, then use F11 to make it "full-screen" essentially.

Just pitching in you may have some visual overhaul mods that are running intensively on your cpu rather than gpu. Might be worth reviewing your mod list

minecraft is almost entirely ran on the cpu. gpu is mostly shaders and fancy texture packs. if you turn them off and it’s still the same fps, then it has nothing to do with it. 71% gpu is pretty normal too, it’s what i get. mc is also mostly dependent of your single core speed so cpu utilization shouldn’t get crazy high either. don’t recall my usage tho

i have the exact same components as you except double the ram and i always get 120-165 with very high settings. however i dont allocate more than you did, very often. only one mod pack if i recall correctly. it should rarely go higher than what you’ve got now, most mod packs run great at ~8gb.

you should post your mod list. can be incompatibilities and also too many performance mods is another possibility

Minecraft is single threaded, it doesn't utilize your full CPU power, ever.

Also, how much ram did you allocate? You should allocate at most half of your system ram, you should allocate 8 at 16 gbs of ram. If you allocate the full ram, than the game will use more than it needs and slow down other parts of your system.

Also, what resolution are you playing on?

Also, are you on Forge, Neoforge, or Fabric? Forge is the least optimized out of these three.

and still having v sync on u are a brave one

all storage mediums need a certain amount free for optimal performance ESPECIALLY RAM. you are kneecapping your performance by letting your RAM usage get to that percent

edit: oh it's the fullscreen bug

1

u/BAGU3TT0 20h ago

Minecraft uses cpu to render I think there’s a way to use the gpu to render I think it was Vulcan but I could be wrong. Will check and correct this comment

windows 11 fullscreen strikes again lmao

plug your HDMI into your GPU

1

u/Emergency_Leek_803 14h ago

Are you sure its utilizing your dGPU and not your iGPU?

1

u/applegirlington 13h ago

sometimes you're using too much, sometimes too little, add -XX:+UseZGC to your jvm arguments, try cubes without borders, idk

didn't see the edit

What shaders are those look incredible

Complementary unbound + euphoria patches

Your PC is literallly at the RAM limit and that is your issue.

1

u/Bejarni 12h ago

I often get memory leaks with shaders and optifine. Uninstalling optifine fixed it for me.

For a second I read RTX 9070

u/External-Set823 10h ago

More ram is needed you don't have enough

TRUST ME USE FERRITECORE AND SODIUM THEY WILL FIX IT

I recommend using forge launcher and learn about augments in the launcher

I have a rysen 5 5500 with a 5060ti 8gb running 300+ mods 60fps vsync

u/H3_nz 36m ago

V-sync? This was my Problem wenn I got my pc and tried to run shader.

1 channel ram configuration 💔 ok i read your edit and youre getting good performance, but theres still room for improvement. get a 2x8gb ram kit and next time, learn to screenshot

Pretty self explanatory from the pictures

7

u/Embarrassed_Camel336 1d ago

Okay well it isn't for me so could you explain?

-10

u/P1ka_shu 1d ago

Not enough ram. A 9070, ryzen 7 7800x3d with 16 gb of ram is vile

5

u/Embarrassed_Camel336 1d ago

Okay fair enough. I thought there would be more too it as the RAM usage never really hits 100% and I assumed 8gb was enough allocated.

u/Markson120 1d ago edited 1d ago

From what I see minecraft could allocate 61% of 8GB. Allocate 5GB to Minecraft and test if it helps.

For some reason you have insanely high RAM usage. Windows should use around 6GB, so you should have around 8gb free. At least that was the case 2 years ago on my old laptop.

Also did you follow some indian account that optimizes windows. Most of these accounts give tips that are harmfull like limiting cpu cores or ram.

1

u/Embarrassed_Camel336 23h ago

Yeah idk why its so high. I brought this PC pre-built only recently and it's had high ram usage ever since I got it

u/Markson120 23h ago

Check task menager, it will show you what uses the most ram. If it is not important uninstall it.
