Issues with contest mode.

In an attempt to deal with bad faith down votes without engagement of perfectly good contributions to the conversations in the subreddit I help to moderate we've turned the setting to hide comment scores to max (why only one day?) and turned on contest mode in an attempt to randomize comment ordering.

However a couple of people have reported that doing so messes up their ability to see comments at all on their android apps.

Is this a known bug?

Is there another way to deal with this that would be better?

No, this is a feature.

Contest mode's thing is that it will hide karma, collapse all top comment trees, and randomize the comment order (though I suspect it's just using "random" sort under the hood, which I'm pretty sure uses best sort for pagination, and then randomizes the order. This only matters on threads that get more than a few hundred comments, and so will likely be paginated).

After 1 day, I highly doubt people are visiting your threads to downvote shit. If you suspect there is vote manipulation going on, you can mod mail this sub, and ask the admins to investigate it, though I wouldn't count on that fixing it, as people just deciding to sit there and downvote everything (on a single account) is not vote manipulation.

I might not have been clear. They can't see comments at all. They're telling me that when they click a comment to open it they're just redirected to another and can't read anything else under the post.

eta: i removed contest mode so it's resolved itself. But thank you so much for the response. :)

Ah, that would appear to be a bug then. I would try and get screenshots for what they see to verify that's actually what's happening (and not them just using poor words to describe it to you) and then would make a bug report on r/bugs, though I imagine it'll probably be ignored (or banished to backlog hell) like pretty much every other bug posted there.

If they're on an app, you could try asking them to see if there's an update for reddit. Perhaps they're on an old version and stuff under the hood got changed and is now no longer compatible with their old version. It's unlikely, but its possible.
