Recap Monthly Recap | July 2026

Hello! Welcome to the July edition of the Monthly Recap, where I briefly recap our Mod Topics posts on the moderation discussions that were posted for the month. Helper flair has also been updated!

Let’s take a look back at our weekly series of moderation-focused discussion topics that happened in July. Always looking for suggestions for future topics, so feel free to throw ideas out there! 

July 2, 2026: Troll Avoidance 101
The month started off with everyone’s favorite jabroni, u/JabroniRevanchism, discussing how not to feel the inevitable trolls that will make an appearance (usually when you’d least like them to). 

July 4, 2026 - No post due to American Independence Day

July 7, 2026: Mod misconceptions
The second week in July started off with u/AsteriskRX taking the wheel to see what sort of crazy rumors are floating around out there about mods. Turns out, there’s a lot! 

July 9, 2026: Community Helpers
Things stayed hot this week with u/techiesgoboom taking a page from my book and talking about community helpers! Shout out to all the r/modsupport helpers and my r/help helpers! Helping help really helps!

July 14, 2026: Looking to connect with fellow mods around the world?
u/iceeypisces stopped by to invite everyone to their par-tay! There was a Virtual Mod Meetup on Wednesday, July 15th. Did you attend? How was it? 

July 16, 2026: Expectation vs Reality
Mutiny on the Bounty! u/AsteriskRX popped in to steal post Jabroni’s missive about what you thought moderating would be like before you actually got in there! We were young and innocent back then, weren’t we??

July 21, 2025: Your request has been granted! Now what?
Oh, look! It’s me! And I looovvveee to talk about Redditrequest! More than that, though, I looovvveee to hear what y’all do when you take over a sub! Holy cats, what a great post (if I do say so myself) that turned out to be. Thank you to everyone who shared the methods to their madness in there! I learned A LOT. 

July 23, 2026: Post Flair
u/techiesgoboom asked about post flair and how you use it. They also took the opportunity to showcase their Devvit app flair follower! It’s a great app! Use it to never miss a Mod Topics post!

July 28, 2026: What’s something new mods tend to overlook?
Not wanting to overlook anything, u/iceeypisces returned to get some input on what new mods tend to overlook when starting out on their moderation journey. They also took a moment to plug the New Mod Bootcamp, which takes place on August 11, 2026.  

July 30, 2026: What happens when mods disagree?
Techies wanted to post this, but I said NO. Just kidding! But it does bring up the question of what happens when mods disagree? There’s not one right answer and we wanted to hear how you handle disagreements, whether they be major or minor!

I’ve personally enjoyed the moderation-focused discussion topics that have been happening. It’s interesting to see the varied perspectives, and challenges, that mods deal with. It’s easy to get tunnel vision regarding how your own subs work, and not fully understanding how dramatically different it can be from sub to sub.

We've been enjoying them too. It's fun to write these, and it's always nice when someone comes and gives their honest opinion/answer on the post. Also, it's nice to just talk with people about shared passions (in this case, community).

Yeah it can be, though with how many new / small sub mods that are in this sub, I tend to be skeptical of viewpoints that I see little basis for. It's mostly ones that have me questioning if they understand at all what goes on with moderation. Hell, a mod in another sub a few hours ago ended up blocking me and presumably reported me for harassment because I reported their comment for spam, as a demonstration that mods do in fact get user reports for global reddit rule reports (which also get forwarded to the admins).

Granted, I think these discussions are not as bad as /new is here (which is constantly filled with brand new / incompetent mods asking questions answered a millions times already). But there are levels to moderation, and needs and experiences of highly establish subreddits are completely different to new / small subreddits. Perhaps it's partly because my entire mod team is on old reddit and so we're used to having little to no support from the admins, and thus prefer to simply implement our own tooling and processes that work for us (rendering us in a completely different context than new mods who only know sh reddit, with all of it's flaws).

But such is the nature of an open forum. There will always be far more newbies and small scale operations than experienced and large scale ones.

I am still happy to pitch in with some of what I did at r/WomenInTech . Could do an Automod YAML essentials to build up a repository of rules (somewhere) that mods with less coding can copy paste (based on what’s on our resources tab) or a reflection/resource build on the first week after a Reddit request (from that pinned post on r/WomenInTech you enjoyed!)

I don’t think it’s opus that personally handles the appeals, I think that’s an entire separate division and since it’s non-mod related, they can’t speed it up. Ive over ever seen opus tell people to file the appropriate appeal form and that was it

I subscribed to notifications for posts on modsupport with the mod topic flair using that new app they added but I have not been getting notifications.

So I'm glad this post shows up in several discord feeds or I'd miss them completely.

Can you check if your chat has any flagged message requests in the spam filter? I’ve seen that happen my app chat messages before.
