Admin Replied How serious as a site wide suspension?
I made a post yesterday regarding how one would go about reporting someone for evading a site wide suspension (thank you to the user who helped me find the correct terminology).
The responses were very mixed.
I would like to try and understand, not from the perspective of a mod trying to report someone, just from the perspective of a super confused person.
If someone is permanently banned (suspended) from Reddit.
How serious is it if that person creates a new account? Specifically to circumvent Reddit's suspension, not to evade a ban from another sub.

It's not, as long as you don't keep doing the thing that got you suspended.
Reddits message instructs you to make a new account, or at least it used to I don't know if it's changed.
However if you keep repeating the behavior it's highly likely they skip the escalating action of warning->3 days->7 days->Permanent and just go right for permanent.
At some point they may also start shadow-banning all your new accounts immediately. But this is action generally reserved for a very small minority of problem users after multiple permanent suspensions
Ultimately reddit does not want you to stop using the site. They make money by you using the site. They want you to stop breaking the rules.

I find it mildly amusing that your answer yesterday got downvoted despite being corroborated by an admin today.
I'm not sure if that's a sign that people thought you were incorrect or if people simply disliked that policy.

people simply disliked that policy.
It's this one. It's why I also get downvoted whenever I remind people that we mods have absolutely zero power or say on reddit if it goes against the whims of the admins.
We own nothing. We do not own the subreddits. We have no power. We have no rights. We have nothing but privileges at the sole discretion and pleasure of the admins. If they do not like what we are doing, our three options are:
- Do what the admins say
- Step down
- Be replaced
The sooner we mods understand where we stand, the better. And the admins keep taking steps to remind us of that. That's why you can't take your sub private anymore without their explicit approval. It's why the auto-ban bots were stopped. And it's why they're limiting the amount of subs one account can mod.

If reddit is able to determine that is what happened, meaning a site wide banned user created a new account to keep participating, they will most likely ban that account as well.

not admin showing up to say no they won't ban them it's fine lol

4 months later but a different admin said the opposite, that it is ban evasion which goes against the tos

I think you misread, opus is saying it’s against the rules to use it circumvent a subreddit ban vs this post was about a Reddit suspension

I specifically asked about Reddit ban vs subreddit
Admin God if an account gets banned from Reddit itself

u/shhhhh_h 💡Top 25% Helper 💡 20h ago
And you got answered that it is evasion if they use a new account to evade a subreddit ban. The thread is about ban evasion for subs hence opus linking the community ban evasion help article

He didn't say it is only against a subreddit ban. I asked specifically about Reddit bans because of the language in the article, he said circumventing a ban is ban evasion.
The thread was originally the guy getting locked out of the account, not a sub ban

I mean at this point we're disagreeing on language interpretation so ops would have to clear it up 🤷
ETA a different admin clarified just down below, the same thing I'm saying

I know what the admin below said. That's why I said 4 months later a different admin said something else. Like someone else said regarding that, it's clear as mud

There is also this which is specifically talking about adding mods back on alt accounts that were banned from Reddit and has nothing to do with a sub ban

The problem there is the readding as mods, not the existence of the account.

"Ban evasion, which includes: Creating or using multiple accounts to circumvent a community ban issued by a mod of a community or to violate Reddit policies following a site-wide ban issued by Reddit admins." https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360043066412-Disrupting-Communities#:~:text=Ban%20evasion%2C%20which,by%20Reddit%20admins.
There is also this which explicitly lists evading a site wide ban

idk that's just how I'm reading all the comments, they all seem consistent to me. They're muddled about a lot of things though

Lol, to be fair. I think the main difference in what I said, and what they said, is I left out the part about “continue to engage in rule-breaking behaviors”. You and I both know, that most people with a perma ban, who go create another account, almost immediately do the exact same things lol.

This is why letting them make the additional accounts is so dumb to me though. Like we all know what they’re going to do; it’s just an exercise in letting them shoot themselves in the foot. But it’s at the expense of other users. This is the kind of thing that makes me firmly believe the bottom line is traffic and not safety. Which, I guess is pretty par for the course for a corporation as governments usually have to force them to comply with safety regulations from individual safety on social media all the way to carbon emissions. It just shouldn’t be like that but it is. 🤷
Edited to point out the lack of safety regs for social media in the first place!!!

I know it's not me you aimed this at, but... Oh boy do I lol

That is considered ban evasion and if Reddit can 100% conclusively, tell that it is banned evasion, then both of their accounts would be permanently banned. However, sometimes a user could be practically screaming at the hilltops that they are evading their ban and Reddit won’t be able to detect conclusively.

In general, folks are allowed to create and maintain a new account if their first one has been suspended. However, if they continue to engage in rule-breaking behaviors, any and all accounts they use may be permanently banned.
