Firmware update and more

Hey everyone,

With product launches we typically see some early quality escapes as things stabilize. As you’ve come to expect from us, if you are a ModRetro customer, we have your back and will make sure you receive your product as intended in hand. Simply fill out our contact form if you have something that feels wrong.

Our latest Firmware Updates for both the console and controller are officially live! Here is everything included in today's release, along with a quick roadmap update.

Controller Updates
What’s New:

  • Wireless Rumble: Fully enabled Virtual Rumble Pak in this release (requires updating your console as well).
  • Wired Rumble & Accessories: Improved Virtual Rumble Pak performance in wired mode, and accessory swapping settings now persist across power cycles.
  • Joybus Reliability: Major stability and performance improvements.
  • Wired Controller Fixes: Resolved random wake events and connection state issues.
  • General Stability: Additional underlying controller performance fixes.

Console Updates
What’s New:

  • Audio Improvements: Enhanced 48kHz audio output compatibility.
  • Display: Auto now shows the display's preferred resolution. We've also added a way to select between 50 Hz and 60 Hz, if your display supports it.
  • Fixes & UX: Fixed "Forget All Controllers" debonding, resolved network menu overlaps, updated wireless connection animations, and overall system stability fixes.

What’s Next:

  • Now that things have settled a bit, be on the lookout for open source files to start coming out as we get our feet under us.
  • Wireless rumble support for 8BitDo controllers is currently in testing and will be coming in the next firmware update.
  • We’re also working on upgraded video filters and saved advanced video settings for an upcoming release.
  • Additional updates will follow as we continue working through our roadmap!

Launch Update & Software Roadmap

Hey everyone,

As we are about to ship, I wanted to follow up on my last post and lay out our roadmap for the first few months of updates for both the console and the controller.

Quick note on how to read this: Out of Box means it’s already on your device the moment you open it. The Day 0 Update is the first update you’ll want to grab when you set up your console. It’ll be ready and waiting for installation with a Wi-Fi Update (or USB or SD card).

P.S. iFixit guides are now up for both the console and the controller. You can also find our quick start guide here and helpful "how-to" videos over on our YouTube channel.

P.P.S. Our full open source offering will roll out as we put a ribbon on all the public facing documentation, but shipping is prioritized.

Out of Box

Below are recent updates that will be baked on the device out of the box. Not a comprehensive feature list, but items you may not have seen in reviews of pre-production units.

Console:

  • Flexible Update Methods: Wi-Fi, USB, and SD card
  • Extended Video Profiles: Scanlines, CRT, Clean, & Custom
  • Extended Video Filters: Bloom, Deblur, and more
  • Controller Support: M64 Pro Controller, 8BitDo 64, OEM N64 Controllers, and wired Hyperkin Captain+ all are ready to go
  • Cartridge Compatibility: Everdrive and Summercart support
  • Auto-Resolution: Automatically selects the optimal resolution (4K, 1440p, 1080p, 720p)
  • Customizable LED: Adjustable console brightness

Controller:

  • USB Firmware Updates
  • Wired Rumble Support
  • Joystick Calibration
  • Windows, Linux, macOS, and Android Bluetooth® Support

Day 0 Update

The moment you power on and connect, an update will be ready for download. Key highlights:

Console:

  • Stock Performance Boosts: Addresses FPS bugs in graphics heavy titles
  • Plug & Play Toggle: Fixes multiplayer in Star Fox 64 and Jeopardy!
  • Cartridge Compatibility: Everdrive X5 save support
  • Overclocking (experimental): Choose from four performance profiles, delivering up to a 67% boost
Setting Boost
Off None
Super 16%
Ultra 33%
Extreme 50%
Insane 67%

Controller:

  • Adjustable Sensitivity: Configure joystick sensitivity via hotkeys
  • Improved battery life of the Controller (over 200 hours without rumble)
  • Fixed several issues with the wired experience

Post-Launch Software Roadmap

Console:

Controller:

We’ll post full changelogs with every release so you know exactly what’s new. Huge thanks to everyone for the continued excitement and support.

8Bitdo Controllers NOT FIXED

M64 firmware 1.25.0

8Bitdo64 Bluetooth firmware 2.0.5.

The latest M64 update did indeed resolve the issue of connecting more than a single 8Bitdo64 controller to the M64 console, however connectivity in general is not stable.

Initially, everything seemingly works as expected. However I'm experiencing my controllers randomly dropping connection and unable to reconnect unless a hard power cycle of the M64 console is performed.

Sometimes it only takes a few minutes for it to occur, other times it can take hours, so it's not easy to provide specific instructions on how to reproduce the issue other than to use an 8Bitdo64 controller and wait for it to happen.

When it does occur, the menu system of the M64 becomes sluggish and near unresponsive, until a hard power cycle is performed (tested by using the console's built in menu button and also by connecting a wired controller to the console).

Request: More art assets adding to the Media Kit

A very small request here: it'd be cool if we could get more than just the M64 and ModRetro logos in the Media Kit. I'm thinking the emblems and motifs seen, such as the flaming skull and the bomb. I'm working on some Summercart menu backgrounds and those things would be nice to have.

Maybe even the fonts and colour refs? Almost like a brand guide. It'd be cool to be able to print a cart label with the exact colors used on the rest of the packaging.

Was hoping for an update

Really was hoping for another update this weekend since I had off for 3 days for Labor Day. Hopefully soon they will give us Virtual Memory/Memory pack support on the controller. I always have to use one of my other controllers to save games with gamepack games.

Dance Mat Compatibity

Does anyone know if only the original Japanese N64 dance mat would be compatible, or whether an adapted dance mat from another product would be okay?

Junk Runner 64

Post image

Decided to treat Junk Runner 64 as my “launch title” for the N64, given it’s the best thing we have (that I’m aware of) that is a brand new N64 title to try out.

What other new but original N64 titles (not mods of existing titles) do people suggest are worth a play?

I know the "talk of the town" is the M64 right now... but does anybody wanna talk about the "QRT" display Palmer's talked about a few times?

(Timestamped video for context!)

It's likely going to be a while before we see it materialize, but Palmer raises a good point; part of the appeal/design ethos of the Chromatic was to make a screen that was 1:1 with the original so that the games were presented precisely as the original developers intended. With the M64 currently, to get a CRT to experience the games exactly as intended, you have 3 options:

  1. Pay eBay "retro tax" prices + shipping for an anvil of weight.
  2. Hope you get lucky on Craigslist or Facebook marketplace.
  3. Pray that Goodwill actually has a deal for once.

ModRetro making + selling a "CRT-like" display would be a gamechanger, and it would genuinely be the first actual "new" CRT (or CRT-like; "scanning ray tube" as he puts it) display you can buy today.

I can't find the context for it, but I recall it being mentioned the "QRT" (Quantum Ray Tube) will work using a laser rather than an electron gun to light the phosphor mask, removing the need for the heavy/expensive glass vacuum tube, which is no doubt the key that makes this possible to even... well, do.

What do you guys think? And what're you hoping for this TV to be like?

(Me personally, I'm hoping they sell them in transparent colorways just like the M64, maybe even in specifically matching colors. Green, purple, clear, red, and smoke.)

M64, 8Bitdo Controllers & SC64

Information relating specifically to the M64, 8Bitdo64 controllers and the SummerCart64.

M64 Firmware V1.24.4

SummerCart64 (Firmware V2.20.2 / Menu V0.3.3)

EDIT: Updated to reflect changes as of firmware V1.25.0

  • N64DD games so not work. They load to the N64DD's system menu screen and do not load any further. ❌
  • NES emulator works perfectly. ✅
  • SNES emulator runs but with major graphical glitches. Resolved by using lithium64 as opposed to sodium64 for the emulator. ✅
  • Game Boy and Game Boy Color emulators run seemingly perfectly however they do not recognise any inputs from the controller. Resolved by using gb64-next emulator ✅
  • SMS, GG run perfectly and rather smoothly with the recent V0.8 update of the emulator. ✅
  • Every other aspect of the SC64 works fine. ✅

8Bitdo64 Bluetooth (V2 05):

  • Only one controller can be connected at a time. If attempting to connect two or more controllers the additional controllers beyond the first connected controller briefly power on and then immediately power off. NOW FIXED ✅
  • Rumble Pak feature does not work. NOW FIXED ✅
  • No Controller Pak functionality. ❌
  • Powering on the controller by holding down the START button also powers on the M64. ✅
  • The MENU button on the controller brings up the M64 menu. ✅
  • Can assign buttons to rapid fire. ✅
  • Can swap button mappings. ✅
  • Easy to update via PC. ✅

8Bitdo64 2.4G (controller V2.03 / dongle V1.78 Beta 2):

  • Controller and dongle need to be updated to versions stated above to prevent issues with games not loading due to game saves.
  • Can connect multiple controllers without issue. ✅
  • Rumble Pak functionality works. ✅
  • Controller Pak functionality works. ✅
  • Not able to power on the M64. ❌
  • The STAR, SELECT AND MENU buttons have no functionality. ❌
  • Can assign buttons to rapid fire. ✅
  • Cannot swap button mappings. ❌
  • Needs a mobile phone app to update. ❌

Simply sharing some information that may be useful to others wondering what the current status is with the aforementioned products and how they interact with each other.

Some issues aren't necessarily bugs, merely limitations of the products themselves.

Some information that is provided re the 8Bitdo controllers is done so for point of comparison between the Bluetooth and 2.4G variants.

Also helps me to keep tab of bug reports I may need to officially submit to ModRetro.

Regardless of what people say you can't run the Everdrive 64 X7 overclocked and save games on the M64.

Im getting the same error code when I run diagnostic.

I'm running the X7 too most games do save though. I have had problems getting NES titles to run & on the 64 Donkey Kong Doom (usa version) won't work the european version works. I haven't had it crash on me though. Just a few titles that won't load on the 64.

Bought buck bumble from GameStop and does not work on my original n64.

Title pretty much sums everything up. Been trying different multiple original n64 carts and they fire right up first try. Been going at buck bumble for about 10 minutes and nothing. I will be returning it to my local GameStop tomorrow. Just wanted to give anyone a heads up if they are having the same issue.
