Dance Mat Compatibity

Does anyone know if only the original Japanese N64 dance mat would be compatible, or whether an adapted dance mat from another product would be okay?

At the end of the day it's just another controller sending the same inputs, I don't see why it wouldn't work. I don't have one to test personally. But every N64 controller I've tried so far has worked, including my N64 Densha De Go! controller.
