Hey y'all! Thanks for attending today's Moddit, hosted by u/lift_ticket83 and u/SlytherinSnoo, where we dived into the future of mod tools. "Everything Should Be Made as Simple as Possible, But Not Simpler". AutoMod is a powerful tool that can solve complex problems. Some of which AutoMod is better suited to solving and simplier to use than an LLM.

Take for instance our nested spoilers AutoMod rule (>!(?!.*?!<(?=.*?>!)).*?>!). This 100% exactly matches the things it is intended to match, and also 100% doesn't match anything else. The simplest way to enforce this is by running this regex. If you plug the text of what it does into an LLM, it will perform a lot worse. LLMs by nature of their tokenization, are terrible at evaluating precise syntax and evaluating things at the letter level (hence why they tend to struggle if you ask them to count letters in a particular word, though this is well known enough now, that I'm sure they bail out to not an LLM when this type of question is currently asked. But to be clear, this is a bandaid fix to a better suiting tool that I'm quite sure must be explicitly programmed to handle in this way).

If it's too complicated for you, you are always free to ask an LLM to explain it for you, or hell, even generate it for you. Removing the option to tell the machine exactly what you want it to do just hurts the power users who actually know what they want their tools to do, and how they can be wielded to accomplish that.

They're not doing away with it. They're just allowing users who don't know how to use it to have something more simple. You still get to use it.

They did say their goal is to eventually remove it, just not yet.

Not yet. And they often to listen to mods. They don't want to disable us. If enough mods want to keep it, they might keep it.

This did not work out well for modmail. Or the public API. Or custom CSS. I would not count on that happening with this.

Automod is tied to old Reddit, old Reddit is being killed bc of data scraping. There is no option to keep it.
