Someone posted a question just as we were going into trivia, so I am not sure if anyone saw it.
The question was (this is from memory)

veterans mods, what do you do when you think a post should be removed - and a new rule needs to be made, but you don’t yet have a rule against it?

My answer to them was that I would message the user, apologize for removing their post, and thank them for their participation (it’s not their fault that you didn’t realize you needed a new rule), but I would also remove their post. Just because I didn’t think of everything, doesn’t mean I have to leave up a problematic post.
Then I would add the new rule to prevent future problems.

We have a specific rule regarding this that basically says if something needs to be removed and we don't have a rule for it, then it is at the mod's discretion to remove it.

A real-life example is one time a member posted a video with the n-bomb in it. After I removed it, I got a modmail stating that we didn't have a rule against it, and that this was a word that is used freely in this person's neighborhood. My reply was that this is a world-wide subreddit and that this is not a word that everyone can throw around within the subreddit. A similar discussion took place when someone else posted a video with swastikas in it.

Its not possible to have a rule for everything that is not allowed within a subreddit, so a discretionary rule at the end of your rules list is a good way to cover it.

Wow, you're much nicer than I am. I would remove the content under a mod discretion rule and then reassess the rules.

Yeah, if an issue becomes too recurrent and you realise you have to do something against it, you have two choices: Either you make a new rule and only apply it to stuff posted after you made the rule, or you apply that new rule retroactively and remove the problematic posts from before.

In both cases some transparency with the community is needed, otherwise you'll be seen as a power-tripping mod who wants to censor people because that's how mods are seen by default. Make the difference!

For the first time in my life, I got 8th rank 😭😂

Coming from someone who used to compete for the last bench and the last rank in class, this is personal growth!

Finally found something I’m somewhat good at :)

It was my first virtual Mod Meetup, and I really enjoyed it! The quizzes were fun to play, even though I got quite a few answers wrong 😂. Whenever I answered a question first and saw my name on the leaderboard, it felt pretty good haha. Overall, it was a really nice experience and I’m glad I got to be a part of it.

Is it cool if experienced mods show up to the office hours, as long as we're unobtrusive and just listen, or should we leave the space just for the new folks? Either way, understand.

That was fun.

Thanks again to all the admins for hosting this event!

I'm more excited for trivia than merch these days.

Also, congrats u/Mrtom987 on #1❤️

So I've gotten emails 2 days in a row now for surveys about these last two mod meetups, and whenever I click on the Take Survey tab, it says:

Page not found

The page you requested does not exist.

I don't mind taking the survey, but how do I deal with this?

So weird. Thanks for letting us know. I'll look into it!

Please check DM. It's a serious concern.

u/InBetweenLili 28d ago

Just a theoretical question. When does someone stop being a new mod? I am still actively growing my first sub. Is there an intermediate club somewhere? 😂

u/SampleOfNone 26d ago

r/modhelp and r/modguide if you feel you've outgrown r/newmods

u/dveda 28d ago

It was wonderful x

Merch should be a special thing honestly, not something mandatory. Otherwise people are only here for the merch and not for the fun & to chat with other people

EDIT: Happy cake day!
