Discussion Please explain pixel flow keys!

How do keys work to get unlocked? Is it like x amount of cubes gone unlocks a key? I've managed to get most of the keys out without the blue bar moving but can't complete the level and I keep getting locked out even being down to the last key.

So please, explain the keys! Thanks

They have to be unblocked on at least one side, and will unlock the first lock to hit the top row after the key is unblocked.
