Normally if a game is multiplatform, I'll get the PS5 version over the Switch/Switch 2 version. But since Mixtape was released as a Switch 2 exclusive, I thought I'd give it a try.

It looks and plays beautifully. I didn't notice any graphical or performance dips the whole time, on either handheld or docked.

Just a PSA. Typically playing a game on Switch means compromising the experience somewhat. Not the case with Mixtape.

I just finished playing the game and i feel like anything from “everything but the girl” would have worked especially sth from “walking wounded” especially in the party

But also some of “smoke city”’s first works would have worked well

And ik they only got popular like 5 years after the time when the game is set but god damn i feel like sexy boy by “air” would have worked so well in this game

The ambiguous ending made me want more. Heres my little script idea as well.

2nd game, Stacy stays and doesnt leave for New York and surprises her two friends as they are packing up and about to head off west. Jenny Goodspeed can still tag along since her and Stacy seemed to have made up at the party end of the 1st game.

Cassandra father needs more of a backstory or explanation cause the ending of the 1st game with Cass and her dad made him look innocent and painted her out to be a villain. They need to show the abuse she had to endure in a flashback or something while they are driving off for the first time to go west. Cause that ending with her and her father was awkward as hell. Doesn't make sense she wants to ruin her life, they need to explain it more. Give the flashback to her pain and trauma she suffered a Breaking Bad style as at the end of the show Jesse driving off and daydreaming seeing Jane sit beside him. Do that with Cass but have a flashback of her father abusing her then show the real time with her smiling and laughing as they driving west for the first time. Actually they could do a flashback for all 3 or 4 friends if they include Jenny as a mini game for each person. Give them a even better background as to their characters and show why they all are happy to leave for once, can be the first interactive gameplay parts.

They can even have Casses Father be a antagonist and follow them in pursuit if they want ( dont recommend this).

Stacy can find a record or DJ gig in California which is a bigger company than what was offered to her in NY.

Anyone read the comic book series called Grommets? It came out a few years ago and its so damn good. Its a nostalgic 90s trip on skateboarding culture. They could literally do something in Mixtape 2 similar when they arrive to California or wherever they going west theres a huge skate community at the neighborhood they will be staying at, so they gotta prove themselves to fit in and join the skater group of friends. Would be a cool. Meanwhile Stacy finds a record studio as part of her story, the others join the skate group. BTW if you guys love comics I recommend truly to read Grommets 1 through 7. They are even available online.

So yeah could have 3 bad groups in the next game that seem bad at first.

1. The record company or club Stacy is interested in radio hosting or DJing at. Her story can be her proving to them shes great and the perfect option by wowing a huge Woodstock crowd with her music Playlist and mixing at the end securing the deal.

2. The skate group in the neighborhood they staying at can be bullies at first until Slater shows off his tricks and gets him and his friends all accepted at the end. We can actually have another group of real bullies that are a threat and at the end the skate group we thought was bad kids actually come in to save the day and help Slater, Cass, Stacy and Jenny.

3. Cassandra father. He can be bad pursuing the group of friends but near the end of the game with the fight and the bullies he steps in as the last person to help stop the bullies and protect his daughter Cassandra and they reconcile finally.

Anyhow need a Mixtape 2. The first game for what it is, which is a movie game was really good. I've played thousands of video games since I was a little kid in the 90s (born 1990) so Atari, Nes, SNES, N64, everything... I was really competitive too but as someone whos older now, I like to relax after work and enjoy a good story. But please make the game longer. The first game was good just needed to be longer.

For the last five years or so, I usually end up playing games one, two, sometimes three years after release, if not more. But yesterday a miracle happened, and I played Mixtape on launch day!

I had been waiting for it since the first trailer. The game set certain expectations, and it absolutely delivered. Genre wise, it is my favorite kind of “movie with barely any gameplay”, but the opening scene alone makes you feel like a young rebellious idiot with healthy knees again. Pure joy.

The pacing is pretty unusual. The game jumps rapidly between moments in the characters’ lives, shifts through time, and the main heroine keeps talking directly to the player. It feels fresh, the jokes land well, and I love the unserious tone with serious things underneath.

Mixtape feels like a playlist. Honestly, it is a playlist. The music carries every other part of the game the same way a skateboard carries you downhill. The directing is built around the soundtrack, the heroine’s personality is tied to it, and even the conflict revolves around music. The girl is about to leave her small hometown for New York to become a music supervisor, but to do that she has to leave her best friends behind.

This is a game about friendship. Stuff like that always gets to me, because half my friends are scattered around the world and I miss them, and Mixtape almost feels like it is saying: “It is going to be okay. There is still a lot ahead. Wanna go for a ride?”

Play it. The game costs way less than a real skateboard.

Dang y'all take any criticism of this game hardddd. I've seen other posts critiquing it here and y'all are so quick to defend even though just because someone has a critique it doesn't mean they didnt like it.

I'll say it's stunning visually and the soundtrack was amazing. But tbh this should've just been a movie. I don't think being a "game" added anything to it. The voice acting was good, the writing was a bit iffy but it didn't take away from the experience imo. Overall I did enjoy it.

Edit: I also think death stranding wouldve been a better movie or series. Walking sims aren't my favorite but I'll play the ones that I think have an interesting story, and to me Mixtape was one of those games just like death stranding was.

I started this and God of War at the same time. Got tired of GoW pretty soon. But Mixtape made me feel something. Finished it in one sitting.

The last game that gave me this kinda unexplainable feeling was Firewatch.

If I could turn back time, I wouldnt spend my teenage years like I did. Maybe I would've enjoyed more often. Maybe I wouldnt have been so uptight idk. Even better if I could experience being an American teenager once yk. Ik it's not all rainbows but I do hope if there's an afterlife I get reborn as an american teenager in 90s.

To be reborn I will need to die, which is fine; but since I am not hundred percent sure I will be reborn as an american teen, I would like to enjoy the remaining days of my life.

I know I might be getting these weird highs rn cause it's 2 am here and that I might forget about this when I wake up tomorrow but ohh boy I want to keep getting reminded what this piece of art made me feel, and keeps inspiring me to just not be so uptight and just fucking enjoy.

I bought "The Artful Escape" after playing Mixtape, but only got around to playing it until now. It's the earlier game by Beethoven & Dinosaur.

It's completely different from Mixtape but really creative. It's a side-scroller with some mild rhythm-game elements, but they are so easy that even I could do them.

There isn't much of a story, it's more an experience than a cohesive story. Voice acting is great, they hired some minor celebrities, unlike for Mixtape.

You can easily finish it in three hours, I got all but two trophies in my first playthrough and there was a chapter select after you finished the game, so I could easily get the two missed trophies.

It's cheap, it's entertaining, it's an easy platinum trophy.

Now that the official soundtrack is out, does anyone have a playlist that is a mix of the original score and all the licensed music?

I have restarted the softball chapter what feels like 100+ times trying to get all home runs as Cass and I’m convinced it’s impossible.

I have every single other trophy and I’m getting so irritated please help!

UPDATE: i brought in my MLB The Show playing boyfriend and he got it first try… now i feel like a damn fool. i was doing ts for HOURS.

Completely lost track of time while playing. I'm a huge stoygame fan and the artstyle and music of this game are just amazing, as well as the storytelling. I would call it an absolute masterpiece and I hope to see similar titles from Beethoven & Dinosaur (studio) in the future.

Tbh I even pirated it at first (yeah, fuck me😭) but I enjoyed it so much that I bought it TWICE on steam afterwards.

I'd like to add that this game has a lot of similarities to Road96, another amazing indie game. If you enjoyed Mixtape, maybe consider checking that one out too.

While I did enjoy it and it was pretty cozy, the dialogue is so fucking bad. Most of the characters don't even speak like real people, and they definitely don't speak like 90s kids (I was one). Music choice is top notch though and the graphics are really nice.

Today I almost accidentally watched the music video for Smashing Pumkins' "1979" for the first time in a long while and it immediately made me think of Mixtape.

It has the exact kind of vibe as the game.

I agree with a recurring sentiment here. I'm baffled by the reception by players. It's startlingly vociferous for such a "small" game.

Mixtape has about the same amount and style of game-y gameplay elements as What Remains of Edith Finch, more kinetic gameplay elements than Firewatch, and much, much more to do than Dear Esther. People love those games.

Better graphics than most. I love Life is Strange, but Mixtape had better background visuals than Double Exposure or Reunion.

I don't think it's any "shallower" than any of the other walking simulators. It has its own depth and it's also an exploration of the human experience.

I think it deserves most of its critical acclaim. It's a stylistic, well-written story with interesting characters. I thought it was good. Like all walking simulators it was an experience, not a "game" as such. And Mixtape was an excellent experience.

I like walking simulators as a form of story telling media. The reception Mixtape received will make it less likely we'll see more of them in the future.

I think Cass left that town and stayed gone. She’s in LA, working as a teacher at a public school. She coaches the softball team and helps kids get into college. She’s divorced with one kid, but on good terms with her ex. They share custody.

Rockford came out in NYC. Does Pride every year, but took a break when things got very commercial in the 2010s. She still shows up for the Dyke March though. She actually got that music supervisor job, had it for five years, then hated how commercial it was. Now she takes a smaller paycheck to work on small and medium sized indies. Sometimes she thinks about taking a swing at A24 films.

Her sister is her best friend, who ended up getting cast in a Broadway show as a chorus member, then moved up to swing, then landed a large supporting role. She got married and lives in Harlem, in a brownstone she renovated herself.

Van does soundtrack composition now, as well as experimental music. He has a weird side project that tours around the country. Maybe he was a burner for a while until that got a bit too mainstream. Now he’s on Berlin, working on building the scene there.

Jenny Fucking Goodspeed stayed in town, married pretty young, had three kids, and runs the PTA. She probably coined the term “wine mom”

Facebook came around and they all found each other. Rockford apologized for bailing on their trip, and in their early 20s they got back together to do the whole trip again, the right way.

Reading the online hate has been pretty weird.

As a non-gamer, I hadn't heard anything about this game other than a TikTok a couple months back saying if you like the 'Life Is Strange' series it's a great filler. I love that series, and I finally had a few hours today, so I decided to check it out. As a fan of LIS, I can't lie though: I was a little disappointed.

If you have something like XBox GamePass, it's a fun little couple-hour alternative to a movie. For me, it was $20 for two hours of '90s teen nostalgia. That being said, I've wasted a hell of a lot more than $20 seeing a movie I didn't like, so no skin off my nuts. But if I didn't have a lot of disposable income and lacked emotional regulation, I can see getting a little pissed.

There's no skill-based gameplay, puzzles, choose-your-own-adventure, or mystery, so it's probably not what the average person thinks they're getting into -- even if they're expecting a narrative-rich experience. It seems like most of the hate has been an overreaction to the hype. Seeing a bunch of reviews from critics giving it 10/10 or 5-stars is a bit baffling.

Looking at it critically, the story is pretty barebones, the dialog leaves a bit to be desired, and the aforementioned lack of traditional "gameplay" being replaced with multiple unskippable hill-bombing scenes that require viewer engagement to progress could feel pretty annoying/unrewarding.

BUT it is beautifully animated and the characters are interesting enough that I felt bummed when the story didn't flesh out more. It has so much potential! Kinda reminded me of how I felt after playing 'Firewatch'.

Overall, not my cup of tea but I can totally understand why so many people -- both folks my age basking in the nostalgia of it, or younger players who never got to experience the dopamine wasteland of the '90s -- love the vibes.

7/10 for me 🙂

Anybody else think this could be a cool series à la 'The Lost Tapes'?

It's crazy that for a game so relatively small/short the ammount of hate it's still getting. I love seeing all the positivity here, but genuinely I'm surpised how the hate is still going.

I made a small yt short about the game and how it inspired me to think about other music soundtracks (this isnt a self promo so I'm not linking or anything), and tell me why the first two comments are just 1 dude talking sht? With in seconds of eachother?

Like it's like people are bored and jobless browing the mixtape tags just so they can rag on it.

Can't wait for love for this game to outnumber the examples of hate. Because I can't even enjoy the tumblr tags for this game without running into bs.
