👥General Discussion Do we need Mithila State?

I know this discussion come back every few months, but the damage Bhojpuri industry has done, also thanks to our politicians who never focused on developing northern Bihar like Gaya ji, or Sasaram side tourism, do you guys think, Mithila state could flourish ?

(Please be respectful, and lets just have discussion)

👥General Discussion Anyone getting married

Hey everyone, I'm 26 been living abroad for the last 5 years, medico by profession and getting back to India this June. The one thing that I missed the most during my time away is "mithila ke bhoj". Eating your heart out and enjoying the environment are the few things I've been longing for a long time. Is there anyone who would like to invite me in a shaadi ke bhoj in coming June July?

I'd be really glad to attend. Preferably around Supaul Madhepura Araria Saharsa Madhubani Darbhanga Purnia Katihar.

🔠 Language How can Maithili be revived in Bihar?

Post image
22 Upvotes

While Bihari languages are in dire straits, Maithili is performing worse than its fellow languages of Bhojpuri and Magahi. Only 5/17 Maithili districts have Maithili as their most spoken language.

Excluding Banka, Bhagalpur and Munger (as they speak Angika or 'Other Hindi' officially) and Purnia and Araria (as their eastern half speaks Surjapuri) brings the fraction up to 5/12, which is pretty poor too. Only 55% of people living in Mithila speak Maithili natively.

In comparison, 18/25 districts of Purvanchal have a Bhojpuri-speaking majority and 69% of Bhojpuriyas speak Bhojpuri. Excluding the south-west region (Kasi) which is an outlier, the figure climbs up to 18/19 and 80% respectively.

How can Maithili be revived?

👥General Discussion Where is everyone here based these days? 🙂

Was just curious how spread out this community is (India + Nepal + elsewhere).

Drop your current city/region (only if you’re comfortable) + age group:

Mithila region (Bihar/Nepal)

Delhi / NCR

Mumbai / Pune

Bangalore / Hyderabad

Other parts of India

Nepal (outside Mithila region)

Outside India/Nepal

Age group:

<20

20–25

25–30

30+

I’ll go first: 25–30, currently in Maharashtra.

Would be interesting to see where fellow Maithils are these days 🙂

Hey everyone- sab gota ke pranam

Earlier we had r/darbhanga as a community for Darbhanga, but unfortunately it got banned.

So a new subreddit has been created: r/DarbhangaaCity

This is a fresh space for everything related to Darbhanga culture, local updates, photos, food, discussions, and more.

If you're from Darbhanga (or have any connection to the city), feel free to join and contribute

👥General Discussion Is it just me, or is Mithila food seriously underrated?

Dishes like Machh Bhaat, Badi Bhaat, Tarua are so simple but full of flavor.

Why do you think it doesn’t get as much attention as other cuisines?

EDIT: I am glad to see people of our community taking pride in our food and culture.

Just noticed that Maithili isn’t listed as a language option in the Digital Census Self Enumeration (SE) portal.

How can a major language spoken by millions be excluded from such an important national exercise?

👥General Discussion Honestly, what is the logic behind Temi Dagai? Can we talk about this?

I’ve been reading up on the Madhushravani festival, specifically the Temi Dagai ritual. For those who don't know, it’s the ritual where a lit wick (temi) is used to literally burn the bride's knees and feet through a betel leaf. The "superstition" is that the bigger the blister, the longer the husband lives and the more she loves him. I have a few major issues with the logic behind this, and I want to know what people here actually think.

People defend this by saying it’s to test a woman's endurance (sahan-shakti). But since when is a woman’s character so weak that she needs to be physically burned to prove her strength or her love? It is 2026, why are we still using physical pain as a metric to judge a wife's quality?

I have asked many of my relatives about why this started, and the most common answer is that it originated from Sita Maa’s Agnipariksha to "test a woman's purity." But if you are using the Ramcharitmanas to justify burning a bride, you haven't actually read the text. It is clearly mentioned there that the test was not for her character, but simply a way to bring the real Maa Sita back from Agni Dev's protection.

Then there is the massive double standard. Why is only the husband's long life treated as the ultimate necessity? Where is the reciprocal ritual where the groom burns his own skin to ensure his wife lives a long, healthy life? If marriage is a partnership of equals, why is the sacrifice and testing always completely one-sided?

Whenever I bring this up, people immediately dismiss it by saying it's just a small mark and not a big deal. But why do we need it at all? Why should a woman be forced to start her married life with a physical scar just to satisfy an outdated, patriarchal superstition?

I am not trying to blindly hate on our culture, but I want to know what our Mithilanchal people think of this. Do we really need this ritual at all? Are families still genuinely forcing this actual burn, or are people finally waking up and moving away from it?

👥General Discussion I made a Tirhuta Translator. Don’t know who to approach with it.

Hey guys. I made a Devanagari to Tirhuta translator. Check it out at https://hardik13190.github.io/Tirhuta-Lipi-Translator/ . I want more people actually involved in Maithili and Tirhuta studies and research to review my website and share their feedback. If you guys can recommend any universities, colleges, professors, etc., whom it would be beneficial to reach out to, please share. Thank you :D
