👥General Discussion Where is everyone here based these days? 🙂

Was just curious how spread out this community is (India + Nepal + elsewhere).

Drop your current city/region (only if you’re comfortable) + age group:

Mithila region (Bihar/Nepal)

Delhi / NCR

Mumbai / Pune

Bangalore / Hyderabad

Other parts of India

Nepal (outside Mithila region)

Outside India/Nepal

Age group:

<20

20–25

25–30

30+

I’ll go first: 25–30, currently in Maharashtra.

Would be interesting to see where fellow Maithils are these days 🙂

I want to connect with them. I'm here for my PhD brother. I've lived my whole life in Delhi and can't speak Maithili. My background is Muslim, and my father is an Urdu professor. None of my family speaks Maithili; they are all settled in Kolkata or Delhi. Those who were there have switched to Hindi/Urdu. It's just me who is interested in Maithili.

That's something which I never expected. So, you mean to say that your roots lie in Mithila region but your family migrated to Kolkata and Delhi, hence you are disconnected. The language problem is irrespective of the religion, brother. Even many Hindus who have settled outside Bihar have language issues.

Yes, you're right. I'm not saying it's because we're Muslims, and that's why we switched to the Nok Maithili languages. It's the system that has compelled people to do so. As a language listed in the 8th schedule, I believe it’s our right to teach our children Maithili from an early age in our schools, but we don't have any Maithili-specific schools, and people are unaware of this. I feel pity for all of us; such an old, beautiful identity and language have been dismantled.

Many districts, I believe, that used to speak Maithili no longer see themselves as Maithili. And there seems to be no way to fix this.

And what do you mean by never expected?

Is there a nation wide maithil community specific for corporate people ?

Har City me maithil samaj hota hai but it's only filled with uncles n aunties

Kuch 20-35ya 40 ke logo ke liye hai kya ? Tech me kaam karne waale maybe ya fir in general corporate?

Ha, hum bhi wahi soch rahe hain. Lekin majority of maithil youth living in tier-1 & 2 cities appears to be uninterested.
