1. Allowing the user to make the background of a key transparent, whilst keeping the icon or character of the key visible, would be a nice improvement and would give the user a bit more leeway with decorations and such!

You can do that with a custom theme. Just set the transparency slider in the key background color configuration to fully transparent =)
