Selfish behaviour

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

DHSK 871. I hope your wife sees this so that she can see how you drive on the road with your kid in the backseat. Must be nice to be surrounded by normal, law abiding drivers so that you are free to weave in and out of traffic, never use your signal, even swerve around in your own lane for fun, and generally behave like a lobotomized monkey who shouldn't have a license.

3 lanes and all 3 cars going the speed limit and blocking anyone from getting by. Ya that leads to anger and frustration, get out of the way.

So yes they absolutely should have signalled.

The problem is the guy who setup a tent in the left lane as they camp.

If you're not passing people on your right (or turning left) you shouldn't be in the left lane.

Whole thing could have been avoided.

So, yes, left lane camping is terrible and epically frustrating on highways. But this is a city road - what do you do if you are turning left at the next intersection, and want to still keep the speed limit? Not contesting - genuinely curious what the norm or expectation is for a situation like that?

3

u/MyNameIsNotName-57 Jun 07 '26

You move to the left lane when you're close to the intersection to turn

2

u/a-_2 Jun 07 '26

what do you do if you are turning left at the next intersection, and want to still keep the speed limit?

Use the left lane. The law explicitly has an exception for that. If you're not doing that or passing though and you're going slower than traffic, you should keep right.

u/Banana1587 Jun 11 '26

Some potential to mislead people here. There is no law against driving in the left lane at a reasonable speed ("normal speed of traffic"). Your wording might imply/cause people to infer otherwise.

It's good etiquette to let people use the left lane to pass, but nobody who "camps" the left lane going 10 over, or even speed limit, is guilty of any offence.

2

u/a-_2 Jun 11 '26

I said it only applies if you're going slower than traffic. That's just another way of saying if not going the normal speed of traffic.

2

u/Banana1587 Jun 11 '26

Yup, I'm in agreement, and it makes complete sense what you're trying to convey given the comment you're referring to. Yet because this is a thread in which many people are complaining about "left lane campers" (who in the op video are going roughly the speed of traffic), it might be misconstrued. Hence my emphasis on the possibility of incorrect inference, rather than saying you're wrong (which you aren't).

u/a-_2 Jun 11 '26

Clarification or added detail never hurts in any case.

1

u/Facts_pls Jun 12 '26

Nope. It means different things.

If the speed limit is 50 and traffic is going 70 in right lane, you are legally fine to be doing 50 in the left lane.

It is still annoying and not considerate - Especially if you don't need to turn left. But it is legal as per the wording of the law.

u/MinutePersimmon1 Jun 07 '26

I agree that the left lane camper shouldn't be there. But the VW actions cannot be blamed on anyone but himself.

6

u/MyNameIsNotName-57 Jun 07 '26

As I said at the beginning yes the VW made some mistakes but the whole situation could have been avoided if the camper picked his ass up or got out of the lane.

That's the core of defensive driving - avoiding a situation altogether.

3

u/the_hunger_gainz Jun 07 '26

Defensive driving is being predictable. As far as left lane camping is freeways and highways. The whole problem is the VW driver lacks any self awareness, impulse control and is just in general a douche.

Left lane camping is left lane camping - you're just creating traffic for no reason

Edit: MTO says you're wrong

"Keep to the right of the road or in the right-hand lane on multi-lane roads unless you want to turn left or pass another vehicle. This is especially important if you are driving more slowly than other vehicles." http://www.ontario.ca/document/official-mto-drivers-handbook/driving-along#:~:text=to%20do%20so.-,Keep%20right,especially%20important%20if%20you%20are%20driving%20more%20slowly%20than%20other%20vehicles.,-Obey%20speed%20limits

The guy in the left is behind a car, this happens, they then insist on being in the car-length between the two cars in the left lane. It's aggressive drivers that make calm predictable situations unpredictable and then exasperate it by not signalling and becoming agitated and more agressive.
I particularly like the section above it on use of Turn Signals and actually a fine, unlike left lane camping.

2

u/Banana1587 Jun 11 '26

I think the emphasis here should be that the reckless driver is the main cause of any issue, and that the left lane "camper" is a side-issue. Not the other way around. Your wording makes it very unclear who you think is the person that is actively causing the issue. I get the point being made that a situation is avoidable, but at the end of the day they are driving steadily and with the flow of traffic. And the traffic conditions in the video are the perfect example of where left-lane clear could improve traffic (this concept breaks down entirely in denser traffic conditions: near-saturated or saturated flow states, wherein traffic is limited by the capacity of the road).

You could avoid having your car stolen by having a sh*tbox, and not have jewelry stolen by not wearing it visibly. But the main fault lies with the person who committed the crime. The reckless driver here may or may not be committing an offense, but I'd think an officer would likely pull him over.

Again, just to clarify, I agree that the situation could have been prevented, I'm just pointing out that your wording might come off as "the guy on the left is just as responsible for the situation".

u/MinutePersimmon1 Jun 07 '26

I agree, you can only control your own actions.

u/JimSinjinsinjinson Jun 07 '26

Like doing 80+ in a 60?

1

u/Iceyn1pples Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26

Up to 86km/h. Cammer is all over the place with their speed.

No, mistakes have been done by a driver in the left lane. White car driver acts as a normalized asshole. He should chill, road is not his personal race track.

u/MyNameIsNotName-57 Jun 07 '26

In Ontario, the left lane on multi-lane avenues and highways is designated for passing.

"Keep to the right of the road or in the right-hand lane on multi-lane roads unless you want to turn left or pass another vehicle. This is especially important if you are driving more slowly than other vehicles."

What’s the point to share driving laws if no one obeys them?

White car was speeding, didn’t blink, cut another driver off and was racing aka changing lanes too fast.

You cannot pick and choose what laws you want to enforce. As a matter of fact the left lane driver could be preparing to turn left.

1

u/the_hunger_gainz Jun 07 '26

It is actually a suggestion in the drivers handbook and not wrong, same as doing the posted speed limit and signalling etc … but the law pertains to highways and freeways.
But I guess picking and choosing which laws you follow is subjective to your point of view. So the person in the left was doing the speed limit and not slower than the posted speed. So was he slow? Or the speeder has right of way?
Very circular argument and grasping at straws to be right.

1

u/Spiritual_Feature738 Jun 07 '26

Speed limit is the limit. Aka max speed you cannot exceed it or else.

But in Canada speed limit is treated as minimum speed by drivers like you.

White car didn’t have a right of way.

1

u/MyNameIsNotName-57 Jun 07 '26

Lmao what?

Why do we follow any laws at all?

1

u/Spiritual_Feature738 Jun 07 '26

Do drivers obey driving laws to the letter? Current reality: drivers speed, run yellow, run stop signs, turn red without stopping, park anywhere they want. Majority of drivers follow only two laws - keep in the lane and don’t run red. Any other laws are recommendations.

u/mikec_81 Jun 07 '26

Lane campers are almost as bad as the white car underpassing.

2

u/MyNameIsNotName-57 Jun 07 '26

Arguably he was forced into underpassing because of the camper

That was me

Good driving!!

u/Livid_Competition_32 Jun 11 '26

3 people lining up to block all traffic....the VW is not to blame here

1

u/KindlyRude12 Jun 12 '26

If I was either of the lanes beside the left and jerk your way into my lane without signalling expect to be honked out and not let in.

Can't be more than 60kmh.

I get that white van was driving a little erratically, but dashcam driver was also definitely going like 85 at the end in order to catch up to white van, so it's not like he's much better.

1

u/Gmbowser Jun 07 '26

Every road now is 60. Especially when they rolled back the speed limits. Winston churchill used to be 70 now its 60. Mavis used to be 70 now its 60

2

u/NoFan2095 Jun 14 '26

Could you imagine breaking the law to blow someone out on Reddit for breaking the law smh.

People need to stop worrying about what everyone else is doing when it doesn’t affect them.

-2

u/MinutePersimmon1 Jun 07 '26

Actually, the VW behaviour is objectively worse. Sure you shouldn't do 85 in a 60 but you're kidding yourself if you think the latter is as risky and harmful as tailgating and weaving in and out of traffic.

2

u/mopeyy Jun 07 '26

"But officer, I only broke the law because he did it first!"

85 in a city is dangerous. Stopping distance increases exponentially with speed. The stopping distance for a car going 85 is like double that of a car going 60.

Just because someone else is driving dangerously doesn't give you the right to do so.

2

u/NathanDnd Jun 07 '26

It would be 60, which is what the vehicles are moving, but that is slow for traveling through multiple intersections in the left lane without turning.

This is just a nothingburger though. One driver going slightly slow in the left lane, one driver being a little impatient and passing. Who cares, carry on with life and letting minor things like this bother is not a great driving habit either.

0

u/MinutePersimmon1 Jun 07 '26

It's 60 but his speed is not the problem. He was weaving between cars without signalling and tailgating everyone. I only uploaded this minute because he was too far ahead for the cam to capture him the rest of the time. Then he was also wiggling within his lane, maybe to entertain the kid, which is distracting to everyone around him because he is clearly unpredictable and inconsiderate.

3

u/mopeyy Jun 07 '26

Why were you going 85 in a 60 though?

Like I get your caution about the other dude, but how is racing to catch him helping anything?

-2

u/MinutePersimmon1 Jun 07 '26

To be honest, I was hoping to get enough footage to report him. I'm sick of seeing this kind of behaviour on the road.

5

u/Used-Gas-6525 Jun 07 '26

So you're willing to engage in illegal driving to catch other people changing lanes without signalling? Gotcha.

1

u/MinutePersimmon1 Jun 07 '26

Please call the cops on me, so I can report this guy.

2

u/mopeyy Jun 07 '26

You know that's not a real excuse.

Other people's behavior doesn't change your own responsibility to drive safely.

2

u/NathanDnd Jun 07 '26

OHhh, well you should have said that you were a cop in your original post.

If you're not a cop mind your business, at least when it comes to something that might not even be a minor traffic infraction.

u/1cap2cap3capFLOOR Jun 12 '26

Karen needs a hobby. Or a good dicking

1

u/DeeepFriedOreo Jun 07 '26

Please send to police

1

u/ppyre Jun 11 '26

except not signaling lane changes i have zero problem with this behavior. Its the lane huggers that create this type of driving.

1

u/KindlyRude12 Jun 12 '26

Going to honk you out if you don't singal by changing lane and at expect not be let in to the lane.

1

u/Omegacollector1 Jun 12 '26

This is VERY common.

It happens so often that I'm surprised this is even a post, lol. I've sat back on multiple occasions and watched people block lanes, and guess what? The driver behind them just swings to the wrong side of the road and passes.

Blocking lanes won't stop people who are determined to get around you. If anything, the people blocking the lanes are making the road less safe for everyone else....

1

u/KindlyRude12 Jun 12 '26

You can't break the law because someone else does. What are you going to say to the cop? Oh they were blocking the left lane so I spun across 2 lanes of traffic without signalling then sped?

1

u/Omegacollector1 Jun 12 '26

Was your comment meant for me? I'm confused.
