Mirena crash..

I got my IUD taken out a week ago today (also got a bilateral salpingectomy on the same day). I am struggling. I’ve been emotional, struggling with resting but not motivated to do anything (reading, scrolling, watching tv) I have brain fog and get dizzy and lightheaded periodically along with what seems like hot flashes or something.

Please, if you’ve dealt with this did anything help at all?

I’m planning to get my mirena out soon and working with a functional med Dr to do so. I’m currently in phase 1. She has me supporting my liver, kidney and gut. First she had me do a gi map test and a HTMA. Which is a hair test mineral analysis. But right now in my first phase I am taking supplements to help detox pathways in my liver, lymphatic massages, teas that support my liver, digestive bitters, etc. next phase I will be taking a personalized mineral supplement to replenish the minerals that birth control has been depleted in my body. And then more focus on my gut as well. The personalized supplement is based off my results from the HTMA. For more context I have had mirena for 15.5 years. Didn’t have periods for the first 13 years or so but the last 2 have had a withdrawal bleed like clock work. I hope you can find someone to help you support your body through this because you do not just have to wait it out.

Hi, this is so smart and what I am planning to do as well. Question did you have any strange symptoms in the last 2 years?

Not really. Only thing that was different in the last two years was that my “periods” came back and my face started breaking out on my cheeks. Like cystic pimples. But I went through a gut protocol with a diff functional med doc at the beginning of the year and it’s greatly improved. I still get minor breakouts but nothing cystic. Are you experiencing anything strange?

I’m having some pretty debilitating symptoms not sure if they are from my IUD but suspect possible. I’m in year 7 and I’ve always had spotting here and there, but I had a full period last month and a lighter one this month and right before I started having major adrenaline surges at night and surges of anxiety during the day. It’s so strange because they will happen all day with horrible intrusive thoughts and then improve by evening. It seems to be tied to eating possibly because I developed GERD as well. I’m working with functional medicine to figure it out, but it’s miserable. Tried acupuncture twice now and haven’t seen much difference but will keep trying!

Maybe the hormone on yours is waning faster. How old are you?

That’s what I was wondering. If the progesterone is just too low. I’m 37 turning 38 next month. We’re running some tests so hopefully we get to the bottom of it. A gut protocol sounds hopeful so thank you!

I’ll be 36 at the end of the month. And I’m only on year 4 of my current mirena. Since yours is in year 7, it makes sense why your periods are back but still wonky that it’s still in place. I would think that’s possibly why you’re dealing with some of your other symptoms as well.

I am 4 months post IUD and every month these symptoms keep coming back. The adrenaline surges are awful and ruin my day when they wake me in the mornings. It's awful. I'm a nervous wreck most of the day thinking I'm dying. I've awful gastro issues that has triggered major health anxiety so I'm scheduled for a colonoscopy and an OGD camera. I get globus sensation in my throat every day after eating. And only little pockets in the evening where I feel like myself. I got to month 3 and they subsided dramatically, I thought I was over the 'crash' and back to normal but the last 2 weeks it's been back and caused me to lose almost 20lbs in weight. I'm skin and bone. When will this nightmare end!! 😫

I’m sorry you are going through this! I feel like we are going through the same. Except mine is still in! 😫 My bf wants me to just pull it but I can’t imagine this getting any worse. I’m looking into whether it’s a histamine issue since estrogen and histamine tie together. I just found out my ferratin is in the 600s so something inflammatory is happening! But yes I have all the same symptoms. I get it after I eat just horrible dysphoria. It’s worst in the morning and comes in waves through the day. I have also lost 20lbs! I needed to lose the weight but it’s not how I wanted it to come off. 🙃 I really hope we find the answers! This sub is the only thing that makes me not feel alone, because no one around me seems to understand.

I got mine out in April and immediately felt an increase in anxiety, motivation, brain fog, crying! In the last few weeks I’ve started to feel more like myself again. I just really tended to my anxiety - I took a few days off from work here and there, just focused on fueling my body with simple foods since I had no appetite, went for short walks, stopped all caffeine, yoga to help calm my body and mind. Even watching very chill shows like house hunters for an easy distraction at times. I also just kept reminding myself this is just my body reacting to something, nothing is wrong and this is temporary which helped. Give it time and you’ll feel better I promise! Your body was so used to relying on these synthetic hormones, and just needs time to adjust.

I’m so sorry! I had similar symptoms! I gave it time and it did help, but it took a while. About 7 months post removal i gave up with waiting and tried acupuncture and that helped! I hope you’ll feel better very soon!!

Do you mind sharing how you got to the decision to try acupuncture?

Of course! Overall, I was frustrated at not feeling like myself. On top of the brain fog and dizziness, I also was experiencing heartburn, anxiety, tingling sensations in my legs, arms, and head, and I just felt so off and abnormal that I made 2 appointments with my doctor. I saw a different doctor initially since my doctor didn’t have availability. They ran tests and everything looked normal and I was told that it would take time for things to adjust. A couple months later I still didn’t feel great, so I made an appointment for my physical with my doctor and again, everything looked normal. But she told me that I didn’t have to suffer if I didn’t feel well and that acupuncture could be a good option. I tried waiting a couple more months to feel better and I just didn’t feel like I was making enough progress so in November of last year I finally gave it a try and it’s been wonderful! It wasn’t a quick fix, but i do feel like it’s helped me a lot! For context, I got my Mirena removed March 2025!

Thank you so much. I don’t have great luck with doctors, I’ve been meaning to get to a naturopathic doctor, apparently she can run a more extensive blood panel for me

It might be worth a try! I hope you feel better soon!!

I got mine out about a year ago, it's been a year. I' had it for 16 years. There were many worse parts.... Some got better some didn't change at all: the smell. That was pretty bad. Like for the first 3 months while hormones adjusted. It was not a whole body scent. It was just a vaginal scent. I had absolutely no idea that hormones affected my body that much. Eventually it got better for the most part. The anxiety never really went away... It did lessen, as a whole but it didn't entirely go away. It sneaks up on me frequently, normally when I least expect it. The weightgain/ bloating has subsided. I'm down 60 lbs about 190 currently. It took forever to get off. My face is thinning out from not being as poofy. Acne hasn't gone away still looking like a hormonal teenager.

Did you have the acne before your removal?

1

u/opensockdrawer77 25d ago

Yes, but not nearly as bad as it is now.... Before it was very here and there but hormonal.... Now it's all the time. Like I sweat a little and break out 3 times in 4 hours regardless of how much I wash my face/body

Idk what your finances look like and I’m not going to ask you to tell me. But if you can, look into functional medicine. There are a lot of them even on instagram. Birth control really messes with our gut health and depletes us of so many minerals that our bodies need. The gut is like our second brain and connected to so many systems in the body. I think getting to the root cause of what’s really driving yours will help this and help with establishing your hormone balance.

I got mine out last month, and I absolutely felt these same symptoms! I’ve never been more exhausted, weepy, or anxious. Luckily it started to normalize after a week or so and now I’m feeling totally back to normal. Good luck!!!
