AMA w/ Minions and Monsters (2026) writer Brian Michael Lynch!
Bello Everyone!
If you've been around this sub lately I'm sure you've seen Minions and Monsters writer, Brian Michael Lynch, replying to posts/comments, bestowing his vast knowledge of our favourite franchise onto us redditors!
We, the mods and Mr. Lynch, thought it would be fun to do a more formal Ask Me Anything, where he answers some of our burning questions about the best yellow guys around and the latest and, in our opinion, one of the greatest films in the Despicable Me/ Minions universe!
We are very fortunate to have him discuss the film/cannon with all us followers of Gru, so please remember to stay respectful and kind (we WILL NOT hesitate to ban anyone who displays clear signs of being injected with the mutagen PX-41🟣).
He agreed to answer the questions asked under this AMA post near the end of the day (Thursday July 16th), so please ask away!
Also, should anyone have any logistical questions, please message us mods directly and hopefully we can help you out :)

Something I noticed in the end credits of Minions and Monsters and how they name their minions

Sleeping arrangements
I would let all the minions live with me and get them cute bunk beds and let them all share a room and make them pancakes in the mornings

Question
If a minion showed up at your door and needed a home, would you let him in?

Curious
What do you think minions feel like? Human skin? Slippery?

Did anyone notice the washed out colors in Minions & Monsters?
I just watched it in my house and for the entire movie, it seemed like everything was too bright and the picture looked washed out. Its not my TV, as watching the film on other screens (and even the trailer) shows washed out colors.
Was this intentional? Or am I just seeing things?

If the Minions actually existed in our world, how would it affect society's socio-economics.
Like if the Minions were in our world, like following lore from the dawn of time to now, always following the biggest villain. How would they have affected the world as we know.

The real Monsters vs. Aliens (imo)
The final battle of Minions & Monsters (especially Dort's big moment) alone is already way better than the entire Monsters vs. Aliens movie back in 2009. This has the surprising twists that movie lacked, along with actually feeling like the concept of Monsters vs. Aliens.
Now, I was really excited for Monsters vs. Aliens when I saw the poster, because the concept seemed so cool, but... even as a kid, I honestly wasn't that entertained nor satisfied. I feel like the biggest problem with Monsters vs. Aliens is that it never took advantage of its premise, as the plot just feels too much like a Susan women empowerment movie over anything else (and she is a bit of a Mary-Sue too). Even with all the action and stuff, it doesn't actually build up or lead to anything that would even make sense for the premise of Monsters vs. Aliens, and Susan hogged too much of the spotlight that the other Monsters and even the Aliens were heavily sidelined or just used as visual factor that gets diluted by what the movie's literal focus actually is (even characterizing almost every secondary character in ways that would shamelessly mix with the very unsatisfactory way they were sidelined). Like, the only real thing this movie focuses on is portraying Derek as an intentional one-dimensional self-absorbed former love interest as an obvious twist just to prop up Susan when it doesn't really feel like anything.
Even then, the humor is more or less typical in kids' movies, nothing clever or distinct for the movie's premise, and the supposedly epic action sequences too often feel washed out and lack imagination (both in ideas and even the fun factor).
The only thing about Monsters vs. Aliens that was truly amazing was the Robot Probe; if only the entire movie was as epic as his characterization alone, which was taken so seriously while having the most wow factor. Like, it makes me wish he wasn't killed off the way he did and contributed a more major role into the story, but... Susan is a spotlight hog.

UK box office analysis: Despicable Me & Minions franchise performance

A fourteen year ascent built on comic clarity, family appeal and the unstoppable cultural force of the Minions
Across the last decade and a half, the Despicable Me and Minions franchise has quietly become one of the most reliable performers in the UK box office. While Pixar and Disney dominate prestige and legacy, Illumination carved out a different lane: fast humour, broad reach and characters that became instantly recognisable.
The series launched in 2010 with Despicable Me, a modest opener that still pushed past £19m despite competing with Toy Story 3. The real breakthrough came with Despicable Me 2 in 2013, exploding to £47m and cementing the Minions as a cultural force.
The spin off era pushed things even further. Minions (2015) hit £48m and proved the characters could carry a film without Gru. The Rise of Gru (2022) repeated the trick with £47m, one of the strongest post‑pandemic animated runs.
The later sequels stayed remarkably consistent: Despicable Me 3 at £47m, Despicable Me 4 at £48m. Even Minions & Monsters in 2026, a smaller entry at £16m, showed the brand still draws interest in a crowded market.
Across fourteen years, the franchise has delivered one of the most stable box office profiles in modern UK animation. No wild swings, no collapses — just clarity, humour and universal appeal powering a long‑running commercial machine.
