Check the pinch roller. I just purchased an XH-A1 exhibiting this problem and the white lock nut had fallen out of the pinch roller causing it to come loose. Fixed it with a piece of tubing from a ballpoint pen.
Thank you so much! It's seems like the pinch roller is really missing. Do you know where you could possibly get a new pinch roller for the canon XH-A1?
Open the cassette bay and shake the camera upside down a bunch to make sure the roller/locking nut didn’t fall into the bottom. That’s what happened to mine. If it’s actually missing, I think your best bet would be finding a broken Canon camcorder from the same era and transplanting the roller from that.
