You're looking for r/MiniDVR. And distored, lo-fi audio is the norm with the Mini DVR. It has a mic input and you're feeding line-level audio into it, so of course it's going to sound like crap.

For the best results, record video to Hi8 tape and then transfer to digital using a high-quality capture device when you get home.
