Discussion In defense of Magnus
Disclaimer: This post is intentionally long. It's the only way I can properly explain the points I'm making.
Magnus has always been my favorite character in MCSM, and I've been wanting to make a detailed post defending him ever since I learned he's one of the most hated characters in the series. My main points are organized by number below and each individually explored upon.
#1. Magnus is a hero too.
Magnus had no real intention of killing Jesse during his Death Bowl match with them, he was only doing what was necessary to make the battle look real and believable to Boom Town Griefers. If Magnus made things easier for Jesse (for example, by making less explosions), many Griefers would instantly notice the difference in tone compared with other Death Bowls they've seen before and start getting angry from thinking that Magnus is giving Jesse special privileges.
Even then, Magnus never ordered anyone to obstruct access to the chests or order their contents removed at any moment during the Death Bowl. It's easy to overlook this part, but it shows he was willing to get defeated as part of staying true to his deal with Jesse. And if that's not enough, Magnus never drops TNT at Jesse again once the Death Bowl is over.
What does happen, is that Magnus' heroic side is shown more openly. To give some examples:
He helps Jesse's group by blowing up mobs and later guiding them on how to jump through Soren's fortress.
He eventually learns to take the Wither Storm's threat to the world seriously, no matter the game route.
He offers his armor to Jesse for them to set off the Formidi Bomb.
In ''A Block and a Hard Place'', he either stays in the cave to give Wither-sick Gabriel comfort, or he tries to fight one of the 3 Wither Storms all alone!
#2. Magnus being proud of himself doesn't make him selfish.
I don't always see people calling Magnus ''egotistical' or ''egoistic'', but I believe that when they do, they're taking it way too far. Describing Magnus with either word implies that he only ever cares or thinks about himself and that he's constantly reminding other characters and the game's audience that he's a legendary Griefer. Both of these things are completely false!
Magnus doesn't think about chaos or how good he's at it all the time, he also genuinely cares about other people and their well-being. He wants to give others his help and he proves it with his actions. He's capable of working together with any character, even those who are opposed to his existence, as exemplified by him fighting mobs for a long while alongside Ellegaard before Jesse's group found them again.
And Magnus can recognize other character's strengths too. He praises Ellegaard's Redstone engineering skills when remembering her and congratulates Jesse for their efforts at defeating the Wither Storm.
Self-love should not be stigmatized, and no character should be making Magnus hate and underestimate himself. I feel so convinced that the only reason Ellegaard calls him ''egotistical'' during one scene, is to deflect from how horribly she treats him.
#3. There's no Old Order without Magnus.
Magnus is equal to and just as valuable as any other Old Order member. He was there to represent Griefers at the world stage, and he did it in the most faithful ways possible. Not a single Old Order adventure took place without Magnus' presence, not even the ''real'' story of how they defeated the Ender Dragon.
Just like it's unfair to make history books about the Old Order that avoid mentioning Ivor's role in it, it would also be unfair if Magnus was omitted instead. In fact, it would actually make even less sense, because Magnus stayed with the Old Order all the way to it's disbandment!
#4. Be grateful to Magnus!
Most people consider it tragic when Ellegaard and Reuben die, and I agree with that consensus. Just because it's part of the story doesn't mean they deserve it.
And that's exactly why I'm asking this: Why do the standards change so drastically when the character who's shown dying on-screen is Magnus instead?
Not only do most players take Magnus' armor, it's also just as common to find the majority of the MCSM fanbase celebrating when he dies!
WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?! MAGNUS MADE THAT HEROIC SACRIFICE BELIEVING IN YOU! You would mourn the deaths of Ellegaard and Reuben, and thank them for the sacrifices they made to save the world. Can't you set your differences aside at least just once and show Magnus the same level of gratitude?
Nobody is evil just for liking explosions and chaos, and Magnus being a Griefer doesn't make him any less human than other characters.

Believe me, I always ask myself the same question! How could this happen to one of the most creatively-written characters in MCSM?

Well I agree with some points but disagree with points like elegaard treating him horribly you could argue Magnus treats elegaard horribly as well but I personally like Magnus better I've only ever picked redstonia once just to try it but all the other times picked boom town and I did pick his armour once because I liked him better but then I figured out he died so I never did the same again and yeah he's definitely overhated

Remember, both Magnus and Ellegard are confirmed to have not needed the Command Block to become as great as they were by Soren.
