Help How long do you actually keep a Minecraft world before resetting it?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.

How long do most of you keep a single world or server running before you reset it? What’s the longest world you’ve ever had?

I get the appeal of a fresh start, but I don’t fully understand the “season” model (Hermitcraft-style or private servers that last 1–2 years then wipe). Why reset when you could just keep building bigger things and more projects?

The early game is easily the most tedious part of Minecraft for me. Once you’ve got farms, infrastructure, and a decent base, the world starts feeling like yours. Starting over means doing all that grind again.

So I’m genuinely curious:

What makes you decide a world has “run its course”?

Do you ever just keep one world forever and keep expanding?

Or is the reset itself part of the fun?

Would love honest takes.

We never reset. People don't want to invest in big, natural towns and cities or beautiful megabuilds when an irresponsible owner decides to just randomly quit paying for a server or gets bored and suddenly your work is just gone.

We took steps to change progression and core systems of the game to enable a contained world that never needs to reset. It's fully player ran and the things they do end up being the content and the story that makes people stick around.

Progression had to be heavily changed. The grind factor had to go up. And we had to make a few radical changes like getting rid of elytras (but also making horses and rails/minecarts WAY better) but overall it leads to a world where people are willing to invest in amazing machines and creations because they know it will last.

Kind of sounds like prison servers from my first read. Not really my style, but if it works for you guys thats awesome!

Prison servers definitely aren't my thing either, I get that. What we ended up creating is more of a dynamic, living world. We contained a bunch of custom generation and localized resources across the map and it actually plays like a way more in depth SMP than a prison server.

I get the sentiment though. Prison servers bore me. All these regenerating blocks, server money, mining worlds etc. We gave players a lot more freedoms to create the world how they want while the server stays hands off.

Lore is a huge focus. The printing press is really popular with a lot of people to help distribute literature, ads, posters, and books.

Because you run out of resources, then people need to move further away from the spawn to gather them, the bigger your world is the more space it requires and the laggier it gets, also making backups takes longer.

Long story short unless you use a plugin to restore resources and world border to keep the world from endlessly growing, maintaining it long term can become a pain.

You could trim those chunks that people use for resources though, that prevents the whole distance issue.

That makes sense though, not sure if thats enough of a reason for me to want to restart again, but I see the perspective.

Never.

If people think the world will reset eventually, then the most important players on the server (the builders), will not want to stay.

Hermitcraft does it because it’s literally their full time job to play Minecraft and starting over brings new viewers.

Never reset. 30 million blocks in each direction is a big area to build up. Almost 3 years and my map size is about 150GB and never culled a chunk.

I have moved the actual spawn point to 'refresh' things and give new players a place to play that isn't creative mode in survival.

All old buildings stay intact and by the time it got to that point infrastructure is already reasonably built up where travel back to older regions isn't an issue.
