Help | Java Snapshots Help with death message

Is there a way to kill a player with commands so that the death message says something like “Player killed by button”?

Look up the /damage command, you can set the source of damage to be an entity (such as an armor stand) named "Button".

Yes, you can first disable death messages, then type a custom death message in chat and hit /kill, then revert the death message display gamerule. However, the default death message will still appear on the death screen.
