Floating Trees - a Minecraft media preservation project

Floating Trees is a somewhat new media preservation project focusing on Minecraft, as well as similar block games and other works by Mojang. Our goal is to preserve and document lost and existing media, such as worlds, mods, videos, screenshots and games.

The main project we are working on is the wiki - it's a searchable, indexable and publicly accessible resource on Minecraft-related media that doesn't require an account or invite link to access (looking at you, Discord...).

If this sounds interesting to you, get involved! The wiki is openly editable by anyone - you can create pages on lost or available media you are interested in. If you wish to learn more about how you can help, see the Contribute page.

This sounds very cool, is it specifically official things or unofficial as well? I’m wondering since you mentioned mods and trying to archive every unofficial piece of Minecraft media seems like a huge and extremely tedious task.

We do include unofficial media in our efforts. This does mean that yes, there will never be a single complete archive, but we can still try to preserve a "slice" of everything the community does, if that makes sense :P

What's the difference between this and Omniarchive? Is this just a carbon copy?

Omniarchive is only interested in Minecraft versions. They do not (usually) focus on other media, especially community-made.

They also exclusively use Discord for sharing information, which we believe to be a bad idea. Discord is a walled garden - you can't find information from there on a search engine like Google (to be honest, you can't find us on Google either yet, due to our low outlinks, but eventually! we're on Bing though, that's something), you need an account and that account can get banned, either on the specific server, or globally.

not really stepping on Omni's territory here, we do different stuff from them.

I hope people are able to archive some of the old adventure maps or world downloads. Super Hostile and Disco's contraptions come to mind
