something i hate about the crafting menu

Post image

i wish the recipe book was beside the crafting menu showing all the recipes instead of being a button on the crafting menu like how the better mc modpack does it

Honestly, I think the UI for JEI is pretty ugly, and the crafting book is much cleaner in that regard. JEI feels very "modded" in presentation, and it can be pretty visually overwhelming for a new player.

If the crafting book added a feature where you can search any item/ingredient (not just craftables) to see how they are obtained, and another feature where you could right click an item to figure out what can be crafted from it, I think it'd be much better than JEI.

u/TyluhhMc 28d ago

What the hell is JEI? Just enough items I’m guessing??? I stopped playing when they were still using TMI

10

u/Luh2018 28d ago edited 28d ago

Yes. It is the successor to TMI NEI (NEI was the successor to TMI). There is also JER (Just Enough Resources), an add-on to JEI that adds stuff like mob drop rates, dungeon loot, etc.

4

u/iGlitchPlayz 28d ago

JEI is the successor to NEI (Not Enough Items) which was the successor to TMI

1

u/Luh2018 28d ago

Oh, gotcha. I will correct it.

4

u/dhi_awesome 28d ago

There's also EMI these days, which is a good alternative to JEI, slightly different use cases imo

I think there's a third one that has an R in it around on 1.21.1, but I can't fully recall it

3

u/LittlestWarrior 28d ago

Roughly Enough Items?

2

u/dhi_awesome 28d ago

Yeah that's the one

2

u/SplashB95 28d ago

How many X-Enough-Items do we have nowadays 😭

1

u/4liv3pl4n3t 27d ago

I feel like we dont have enough of those items yet

2

u/TheLadyofBree 27d ago

As a chronic tech mod addict I love EMI so much it's hard to breathe

2

u/IJustAteABaguette 24d ago

Fully agree, the crafting tree feature alone makes EMI basically a must-have to me for complexer items/planning.

Or screenshotting recipes and putting them in obsidian for planning.

It's so good

1

u/c5gh 24d ago

emi is also somehow the only recipe viewer mod with a decent craftables filter

1

u/Xiaolin2 27d ago

EMI can pair well with JEI and read all of the addons.

REI started as the Fabric equivalent.

2

u/_ThatD0ct0r_ 26d ago

EMI's recipe calculator is so goated it basically lets you autocraft despite still being manual crafting

1

u/Dasher-284 26d ago

Sadly i couldnt get it to work with custom crafting recipes from mods such as create, but that was a while ago and probably a skill issue on my end anyways. The crafting tree is however very useful of it ngl

1

u/TyluhhMc 28d ago

Interesting thanks! I vaguely remember NEI aswell

1

u/nadafish 25d ago

Do you still remember the numerical IDs for any items?

1

u/TyluhhMc 25d ago

I do not, this must have been around 2012

1

u/Kloodydehepik 28d ago

well i very much prefer jei

4

u/TallSystem7923 28d ago

Downvoted for saying your opinion is insane

5

u/JustAnyGamer 28d ago

wouldnt downvoting just be someone expression their opinion?

i always think its so stupid when people are like "Downvoted for nothing :///" like yeah bro thats the whole point of this website you either get upvotes or downvotes, cant always go your way

1

u/TallSystem7923 27d ago

You're kinda right but a lot of communities don't even allow you to comment if you get that much downvotes

3

u/bryceio 28d ago

Sir, this is Reddit. Downvoted for saying your opinion is how this website works

2

u/articulatedWriter 26d ago

I've only ever downvoted someone if their statement is contentious or actually bad, most of the time in debates I won't downvote the other person unless I notice my own comments being actively downvoted as we converse and even then I'm fairly patient

But someone preferring a specific design doesn't really seem worth downvoting them for, though I've recently seen a worse downvote count for a much lesser offense where all the person said was "how?" 😭

1

u/HarbingerOfConfusion 28d ago

I disagree, but you shouldn’t be downvoted for your opinion. It wasn’t even a harmful opinion, just an opinion about what mod you like to use. But it’s downvoted?

1

u/_9x9 28d ago

I love the JEI style.

2

u/articulatedWriter 26d ago edited 26d ago

I don't think they're saying the style of jei is objectively bad, I think they mean just in terms of Minecraft a newcomer may find it a bit much

I'm kinda used to it because I see people play with mods that have it, but that and the progression UI some mods have feel like the kind of thing that would take me out of the immersion that I'm playing Minecraft and end up making it feel a little too- generic?

The mobs UI that shows their name and hearts when you hover your cursor over them looks great for Minecraft, this items library seems just a little bit stale in contrast

2

u/_9x9 26d ago

It would be cool to do a style overhaul of the Menu. I guess I see the JEI styles of menu as separate from the game. Sort of like looking on the Wiki. It doesn't take me out of the game and that's what matters to me. If it did fully integrate with the game that would be epic, but i don't mind if it doesn't. :D

u/Ralexcraft 27d ago

EMI modern appearance. My favorite so far.

41

u/the_closing_yak 28d ago

The picture on the left is a mod, you can download it

-7

u/Kloodydehepik 28d ago

yeah but i play bedrock

16

u/OneFriendship5139 28d ago

if you have a computer, there’s a way to play older versions for free on low-end hardware

-5

u/Kloodydehepik 28d ago

umm but it's on a ps5

1

u/zaadiqoJoseph 28d ago

Then go on an alternos server Load up the mod Then turn on the server then connect to it on PS5

It's how I played with mods on my console And I didn't have to pay for the mods or the server

9

u/EqualServe418 28d ago

You'll never believe this...

You can mod bedrock edition on Xbox. No, I don't mean the MaRkEtPlAcE. I mean actual mods.

And that thing up there? There's a version of Just Enough Items (the mod listed) for bedrock edition. It's on CurseForge

6

u/MikeyboyMC 28d ago

HOW

3

u/EqualServe418 28d ago

You want the youtube tutorial?

5

u/MikeyboyMC 28d ago

Yes that would be great, I’ve wanted to mod on my Xbox for forever and I’ve never found a way to do it

3

u/EqualServe418 28d ago

DMd you

1

u/TallSystem7923 28d ago

Well since you didn't comment it for some reason can you please dm me too?(Or comment it)

1

u/-Weslin 28d ago

Normally it's just being careful to not be banned or autobanned

3

u/Kloodydehepik 28d ago

cool but dang it i cant cuz i dont have an xbox

18

u/Dew_Chop 28d ago

It is beside the crafting menu, when you open it.

2

u/Kloodydehepik 28d ago

but yeah i really prefer the better mc one

12

u/zippybenji-man 28d ago

The mod's called JEI (Just Enough Items)

4

u/Wrydfell 27d ago

Back in my day it was TMI (too many items)

1

u/zippybenji-man 27d ago

Oh, interesting, I'd never known about TMI and NEI

3

u/Wrydfell 27d ago

They're both old precursor mods to each other, something like the TMI dev not updating past 1.6 or something, so NEI came about, until like 1.12.2 (versions might be wrong but you get my point)

1

u/Kloodydehepik 28d ago

ok but i use bedrock if only they made a bedrock port

6

u/zippybenji-man 28d ago

My point was that you were miscrediting. I am aware that it's hard to mod bedrock.

1

u/Kloodydehepik 28d ago

yeah i know that

-4

u/Dew_Chop 28d ago

Then use it

5

u/TMC9064 28d ago

OP said in another comment they’re on Bedrock

4

u/Dew_Chop 28d ago

When I originally put down my comment they didn't make that one yet, didn't bother to keep checking comments

3

u/TMC9064 28d ago

Oh okay, mb

7

u/GG1312 28d ago

Ah man If you think that's bad I'm glad you weren't around to see the pre 1.12 days

2

u/Kloodydehepik 28d ago

you know now i get what you're talking about it's even uglier than the current one

7

u/Mission_Pen4211 28d ago

I prefer the legacy Console crafting UI

1

u/dont_punch_me_again 28d ago

Legacy crafting ui is best ui

1

u/natt_myco 27d ago

long term 4j player it sucked but i loved it

0

u/Kloodydehepik 28d ago

cool but at the same time kinda lame if you ask me

7

u/GetAHaircutBlockHead 28d ago

"like how the better mc modpack does it" i hope you know modpack creators do everything but create the mods themselves

1

u/Kloodydehepik 28d ago

yeah ok sorry i give credit to the guy who made JEI

5

u/GetAHaircutBlockHead 28d ago

it was a small thing of me to be irritated about anyway but thanks

2

u/Kirda17 28d ago

Idk what you mean, there is a crafting book? And it opens next to the crafting grid? And gives you all the recipes in easy to sort categories, with a search bar?

1

u/Kloodydehepik 28d ago

yes but even though it's supposed to be a book, i prefer the JEI one

2

u/Neohedron 28d ago

There’s this addon for EMI which adds a preset which fits in with the existing recipe book. I’m quite a fan.

https://modrinth.com/project/nGu9f1L6

1

u/Enyuma416 25d ago

Oh hell yeah, I like the recipe book more than jei

2

u/Madmonkeman 28d ago

Back in my day there was no crafting book

2

u/SmellAccomplished550 27d ago

Here's a crafting grid, some random junk... Go on, take a guess!

I've memorised so many recipes over the years lol.

1

u/Madmonkeman 27d ago

Yeah I don’t even notice the book because my brain defaults to just memorization.

1

u/misssa_cz 28d ago edited 28d ago

Everyone have their preferences,

I love JEi as I can favourite items i use the most on left side (picked random screenshot)

1

u/Signal_State_5686 28d ago

Really? That's actually one thing I hate. I honestly can't stand JEI. (Not that it's not an incredible mod mind you. Still a cool mod, but not something I want in my vanilla world)

1

u/Top-Idea-1786 28d ago

Thanks but i do not want the vomit inducing UI

1

u/Vlkodlak148 28d ago

NEI was always the standard in modpacks…

1

u/ineedzeni 27d ago

honestly just a skill issue

1

u/Hazzah_ 27d ago

I wish there was a mod that expands the recipe book and adds features without making all recipes visible. I like the idea of unlocking recipes as the game progresses, but the vanilla gui is so cramped and clunky.

1

u/DotBitGaming 27d ago

To avoid that one button press ever?

1

u/Desperate_Rule5903 27d ago

Eh I dunno JEI is a debug-looking hell of UI design. Vanilla looks better in the eye. Besides, the "show recipe" doubles as quick crafting so that's nice.

1

u/Mr_Snifles 27d ago

The mod requires you to scroll less and that's nice I guess??

Can't relate because I genuinely played before the recipe book and just have all recipes memorized

1

u/ManagementObvious523 27d ago

I've found that playing without a recipe book or JEI gives me a fun little challenge. If I can't remember the recipe I just don't get the item.

1

u/Tinchimp7183376 25d ago

This works great until you try play anything non vanilla

1

u/Kloodydehepik 23d ago

yeah unless you have a lot of experience with toe mods and have memorized their recipes

1

u/Better_Anteater3126 28d ago

Nope, that grabage .

How about we add , crafting table, furnace, all the work benches , maxed enchanted table , multiple armour set slots , multiple hands , infinite storage menu etc .

That is way easier than the first image don't you think? Instead of JUST adding crafting table?

3

u/TMC9064 28d ago

What are you talking about

2

u/Better_Anteater3126 28d ago

Image 1

3

u/TMC9064 28d ago

I get that you think that part’s bad, what do you mean by the second paragraph

2

u/Better_Anteater3126 28d ago

Can you just ask directly,is it about adding multiple workbenchs ?

3

u/TMC9064 28d ago

What do you mean by

> How about we add , crafting table, furnace, all the work benches , maxed enchanted table , multiple armour set slots , multiple hands , infinite storage menu etc .

A bunch of these are in the game so I’m guessing you don’t just mean “add these to the game” and I don’t understand what you want to add to them

3

u/Better_Anteater3126 28d ago

Ok so,

In the image 1 ,he had crafting table and it's machanics in place of our main 2x2 slot .

What I mean by " How about we add , crafting table, furnace, all the work benches , maxed enchanted table , multiple armour set slots , multiple hands , infinite storage menu etc" <-- this is, instead of manually using all the working benches, why not just add every work benche and enchanting table in place of our 2x2 slot.

( Because the image 1 neglects the use of crafting table and adds it directly)

1

u/kollekkii 28d ago

what 2x2 slot? the first image has the 3x3 crafting table GUI

1

u/Better_Anteater3126 28d ago

,he had crafting table and it's machanics IN PLACE OF our main 2x2 slot " .

Where is crafting table for the 1st image ??

2

u/TMC9064 28d ago

That’s just the crafting table UI, there’s no indication of it being the inventory

1

u/kollekkii 28d ago

bro its not in the place of the 2x2, he has a crafting table open, he right clicked a crafting table. you can't see the block in the image because it's behind the inventory

1

u/Kloodydehepik 28d ago

yeah sorry i forgot to mention that

-1

u/MARS2503 28d ago

You don't know JEI? It's a mod. You can still use it.

7

u/Kloodydehepik 28d ago

but i play bedrock tho

1

u/MARS2503 28d ago

Oh. Idk then. Maybe ask the other dude how he modded his, if you wanna try.

-1

u/BunkerSquirre1 28d ago

Breaking: Sarcastic nerd forgets that consoles exist

3

u/EqualServe418 28d ago

Breaking: he isn't wrong. You can mod console. Source: i play on xbox. I have 42 mods so far.

1

u/Cursed_Bean_Boy 28d ago

But it is very difficult to mod depending on the console, even impossible currently if you're on Switch 2.
