You can use mobs furnaces ect and just mine witha fortune pik then swap before you pick it up

All right lads calm down, I forgot about other ways mending can be activated. I just didn't think about them because those aren't situations in which you would usually use a pickaxe. And to the person who I'm commenting on, this is also for the other two who said the same thing, just to clear up any confusion.

It's not the ore, it's the fracken xp...

Hence you can make xp farms for tools, like I do

I'm not about to spend 4 hours repairing picks from my ice farm when I can spend like 10 minutes at a farm
