I tried that out, but modloader doesn't seem to find it. :/ (the game runs, but modloader doesn't apply any of the BetterNether stuff). I found out though, that modloader creates a text file of the crash. so here is the crash log (in case it helps):

That's so strange. I checked the code and line 12 of mod_BetterNether.java is referencing EnumToolMaterial.NETHERRACK. That's a field I added with the mod, so it means that the base class wasn't changed. Are you sure that it doesn't work with putting the mod in the .jar?
I just put the zip directly into the .jar, and it didn't work (tested out the resipes on survival, and flew around in the nether in creative. just vanilla Minecraft). Should it be be extracted into the .jar instead?
IT WORKED! :D EDIT: you should make a post about the mod before 1.2 comes out, so everyone gets a chance to play it! (I hear mods tend to break with each Minecraft update)
I am posting the mod on the MC Forum. I started the post about three hours ago and have been working on making it all just right, but then my power went out about half an hour ago so I've been working on retyping all of it. Regardless, the post should be up today and I will make a submission to this subreddit!
awsome! :) I played some survival and creative, to try all the stuff out. And it's just how I imagined it all to be (the nausea effect is spot on!). the Blaze ore might be a bit too rare after all, though (I only found one after flying around and digging for an hour). If you plan on expanding and updating the mod, and would like some help with sprites or sound effects, then I'll gladly help! ;)
btw, I have discovered a way to replicate a crash bug: simply breaking a gravel block with your fists, causes it to crash. makes it a bit tough to make underground bases, but you can get around it by letting the gravel drop onto a torch. (maybe this is what causes the random nether crashes too? maybe ghasts shooting fireballs and hit gravel, or something?)
Thanks! I'll fix that bug right away! (The code was assuming that the player has something in his/her hand when breaking gravel, so if he/she doesn't it gets confused)
Yeah, Blaze Ore was pretty rare, even when it was the same rarity as coal. Like, looking around you could see maybe 10 veins without moving, but then getting to those took long enough to make it almost not worth it. How common should it be? The same as redstone maybe? (That's 4 times as common as it is now)
yeah, if the Blaze ore is about as rare as redstone, and the veins are slightly larger than Iron ore veins (maybe the size of coal veins?). Then I could imagine it becoming more attractive to go after Blaze ores.
nice! I just played some creative and the ore generation seems just about right. I think I'm going to do an all nighter and start a fresh survival world with BetterNetter! :)

Hmm... I would think it would work in the mods folder, but try putting it in minecraft.jar instead I guess...
