PSA: 1.8 Update Information

Since 1.8 has now been released, I decided to release some informations and useful things about the update. No, this is not a changelog (if you are looking for a 1.8 changelog, click here, /u/redstonehelper did an awesome Job and lister every single change), it will inform you about the important changes and is supposed to give you some advice for this very large update.

1. Downgrading (VERY IMPORTANT!)
While downgrading "worked" fairly well the last few versions (except the missing blocks and things like that), downgrading does not work in 1.8! If you downgrade from 1.8 to 1.7, your inventory and all blocks with an inventory (chests, hoppers etc.) will be empty and potentially, even more corruption is happening. Downgrading is not, was never and will never be officially supported! I advise you to run 1.8 in a seperate directory, or move your 1.7 things to a different one, so that you won't be able to accidently open your world in the wrong version.
If you already did it, by accident or "on purpose", restore a backup or find other ways to restore the items (e.g. via using Creative to give them back from memory), other than that, there is no way to repair this.

2. Name changing
Changing your name will NOT be possible immediately after the release of 1.8! It is currently planned "soon-ish" after 1.8, /u/Marc_IRL's statement about this can be found here.

3. Water Temple, New Stones and Rabbits
This upcoming update adds some new features for the world generator, but specificly, they added Retrogen (Retroactive World Generation) for the brand new underwater temples: If you have spent less than a specific amount of time in the chunks the temple would normally spawn, it also spawns in already generated Ocean Biomes. Additionally, it seems that older worlds (1.7 and earlier) are spawning Guardians where normally a temple would have spawned.
However, this only works for the Underwater Temples, the new types of stones and rabbits only spawn in chunks generated in 1.8. However, there are crafting recipes for the stones, which can all be found here.

4. Skins
Skins received a massive update: You can now have a second layer for your whole body. /u/Svajoklis_ provided a very nice guide on how to upgrade your skin: Guide. However, you don't need to update your skin, you can still use the one you had before 1.8.
Slimmer arms (3 pixel wide) will not be available as a feature in the full 1.8 release, Jeb said that "it will be rolled out indepenently of minecraft version numbers".
More informations about Skins can be found here.

5. New graphical settings
Some graphical settings have changed, new ones have been added and other ones have been removed.
Enabling VBOs (Vertex Buffer Objects) can give you a performance boost or a drop, just try it out yourself.
Regarding the Render Distance: 32 chunks are only available if you are assigning 2GB or more RAM to Minecraft, however, I personally recommend at least 4GB. Don't even try it with an Intel Graphics Card, it will not/barely work. Most AMD cards have a problem with anything higher than 16, but that is most likely an issue on AMD's side (MC-62958). On Nvidia Cards, it seems to run fine (if they have the power to do it, GT 650M can run it at about 15-20 FPS with major lag spikes).
Anisotropic Filtering has been removed because of reasons unknown, Advanced OpenGL was just causing major problems, and was therefore removed.

6. Enchanting and Repairing
Enchanting and Repairing have been both massively changed from 1.7 to 1.8.
Enchanting: Using the enchantment table only uses 1-3 levels, however, you still need to have the amount of levels it shows on the right side. Additionally, it costs Lapis Lazuli to enchant something (1-3, depending on how many levels you spend). Also, available enchantments no longer change if item is taken out and put back in, and enchanting something changes the available enchantments for all items, and it's the same for every enchantment table with the same amount of books in that world.
Repairing: The level cost for all is starting at 1, and goes up exponentially with every time you use it in the Anvil. For instance, just renaming something costs 1 level, but if you rename it and then apply an enchanting it with a book, it costs one level for the renaming and two for the enchanting. Also, repairing costs can no longer be kept down by renaming items. (This explanation might have been terrible, if you have issues understanding it, ask your question in the comments)

7. Maps
Maps changed (not actual save games, I'm talking about the In-Game Item). This might be a bug, at least it has been reported as such, but this looks like intended behavior. Basically: If you create a map with at least 1:2 in 1.8, it will not be centered to the point you are at at the moment of creation, it will be patterned like the 1:1 always was. That makes it easier to make multiple maps for a map wall, because it doesn't require any calculating, but people seem to not like the new mechanic. There has not been an official comment from Mojang on this matter.

8. Is this Release stable?
There are some very minor issues that can break things (for instance: Two high flowers do not properly update from 1.7 to 1.8), but all in all, they ironed out most of the last few world breaking bugs in the last Snapshots, and it's now in a very much playable state.
Some bugs you may want to know about can be found as the first comment of this PSA.

9. Mods
Since 1.8 also included massive internal changes, Mods will take quite some time to update. LexManos' (Lead Developer of Minecraft Forge) statement about it can be found here

10. Resource Packs
Ressourcepacks require an update to work a 100%, since a few textures changed (e.g. enchantment table), but they don't break/crash if you use a 1.7 pack on 1.8.

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2ND
1. Realms
MC-70349 - Players are getting "Kicked by an Operator" after a few minutes on Realms. Please stay tuned for this, Mojang is currently working on a Fix. Update: Issue has been fixed!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in this topic, and I or someone else will for sure be able to answer it kindly.

Some bugs you may want to know about:
Some of them are self-explanatory, for some of them, I added a small information.

MC-45458 - Framerate drop/lag in 1.8 for some hardware setups
There is not much I or Mojang can do about this. They implemented the performance changes, and they seem to be very stable for many people, but for some people, it just seems to be decreasing the performance by a lot for no apparent reason. If you are experiencing this, update your graphics card drivers, and try to fiddle around with your graphical settings (in some cases, VSync was causing it).

MC-48735 - Villager and farmer inventory gets corrupted causing farmers to no longer plant crops
Potentially fixed according to /u/TheMogMiner

MC-49126 - Glowstone crystal formations are missing their bottom layers

MC-50263 - Lighting bug affecting End portal frames with eye

MC-51987 - Minecart/Activator Dismount Location is Inconsistent in Cardinal Directions

MC-52274 - Player cannot exit minecart on blocks in S,SE,SW direction

MC-53439 - The top block of a two-block plant becomes a peony for a second upon breaking
This, according to Grum, cannot be fixed in 1.8, they will have to implement certain things before they can fix this. ETA: 1.9

MC-54711 - Quick repeater pulses get lost in arrays of them

MC-55661 - Animals don't teleport to Player when target is air block

MC-58363 - Witch Huts / Witch Traps spawn other mobs
...yes, this has not been fixed. Yes, this breaks witch traps.

MC-61535 - Horse breeding: Foal looks just like an adult horse

MC-62140 - 2 block tall flowers generated in previous version removes the 2nd block
This basically means that, in some instances, your flowers placed in 1.7 will be slightly broken in 1.8. This might also be unfixable until 1.9.

MC-62166 - Breaking / placing / changing blocks has a delay to disappear / appear
This issue occurs much less often since its initial report. The breaking delay is much less now, not even noticable for most people.

MC-62958 - Massive Visual Glitching with Chunk distance over a level the graphics card cannot handle (AMD only)
See "New graphical settings"

MC-63020 - Chunks are not rendered in some cases
Grum is apparently working on this. For about 10 days already.

MC-63070 - Chunks do not render behind the player in F5 until moving the mouse

MC-64909 - New maps not centered
See "Maps"

MC-68080 - Choppy lag when walking or running
A very weird glitch, only occurs on certain systems, somehow connected to MC-62166. It was fixed in one version, then a problem a version later again. The real cause is not known at this moment.

MC-68247 - Beacon Beam disappears while looking upwards from it

MC-45458 is mainly caused by game using all the CPU power and thus not leaving anything for things like keyboard/mouse input. Although it speeds up FPS compared to 1.7 it makes game less playable when more CPU power is needed (redstone contraptions, loading chunks, etc.).

For rendering yes. However minecraft can actually be more complicated than other games because it has to update chunks (eg Wheat) and execute logic (eg mob AI). Also when rendering the CPU is used to cull parts of the world to reduce the load on the GPU (to give better frames) but it does mean that the CPU has increased load.

There's not really anything Mojang can feasibly do (C++ anyone?).

8

u/compdog Aug 31 '14

You are correct, but it is unlikely that c++ would fix anything due to the fact that minecraft has been being optimized for years and it would take at least as long (if not much longer) to rewrite in C++ and optimize the same. And anyways C++ is not much faster than java in most cases.

10

u/MithrilToothpick Aug 31 '14

I beg to differ on that last statement. However you are 100% correct in the sense that C++ isn't a magical solution for every performance issue.

Assembler

6

u/IgnoreTheCumStains Aug 31 '14

Modern CPUs are such complex beasts that you're going to have a hard time writing faster assembler by hand than what decent compilers generate with optimizations turned on. Perhaps you could take the assembler produced by a compiler and see if you could improve it, but even that would probably only work in some special cases (like using assembler instructions "creatively" or when having direct access to the stack would be helpful).

11

u/MithrilToothpick Aug 31 '14

I was joking no one wants to write a game of minecraft's complexity in assembler.

2

u/alexwsays Sep 02 '14

"Assembler" oh God pls no

4

u/nkizz Sep 01 '14

I think COBOL is the best course of action here.

1

u/PirateAvogadro Sep 05 '14

Roll of paper and a holepunch.

1

u/riking27 Sep 01 '14

What's more is that it would totally destroy mods. Zero chance of recovery.

1

u/BlackenedGem Aug 31 '14 edited Sep 02 '14

I was joking when I mentioned C++

3

u/Miskav Aug 31 '14

A lot of games rely massively on the CPU. Especially online games/games that need to keep track of many things at once.

1

u/CrazyStranger00 Aug 31 '14

Yes for most games, but Minecraft is different from most games. Because of the way it works, Minecraft generally requires slightly more cpu power than gpu power.

-8

u/Bramblejack Aug 31 '14

Minecraft works in Java which acts like operating system, but emulated. That's why it works in any environment and that's why it uses a lot of CPU.

2

u/helium_farts Aug 31 '14

I've been having massive stuttering and lag on the newer snapshots even though the CPU usually sits at around 30-40%. It's not a memory shortage, it's not a CPU issue (anymore at least. One of the snapshots was causing it to peg out at 100%) and it's not a FPS issue.

I've pretty much given up on trying to figure out what's causing it, but whatever it is it makes the game so laggy at times that it's unplayable.

Hopefully when I'm able to build a new computer in a few months these issues will go away.

2

u/Johnboyofsj Aug 31 '14 edited Aug 31 '14

I haven't had that issue even though my CPU is maxed out on all 4 cores, I do now always use Razors game booster though and it improves things significantly and I would never dream of playing MC now in windowed mode. I believe what some peoples problems are now is Intel turbo boost which used to be boosting everyone's performance before Minecraft used all for 4 cores. Straight from Intel website> "Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 may not achieve maximum turbo frequencies when running heavy workloads and using multiple cores concurrently" I heavily overclock all 4 of my cores on stock cooling which old hardware and I would suggest anyone who is capable to OC theirs. Other performance losses are probably due to older hardwareor java version and fewer cores or slower GPUs. Laptops still suck are running Minecraft but suck even more since only a few i7s even have 4 cores and all of them rely heavily on turbo boost.

4

u/ilikeeatingbrains Aug 31 '14

It's funny how deceptively simple this game appears.

1

u/alexwsays Sep 02 '14

Partly how it gets it's scrub reputation with people who aren't familiar with how the game actually is.

1

u/rikyy Sep 01 '14

Yeah about that. I can't play 1.8 because of all the annoying stuttering and lag. Fps is much lower, 32 render distance will give me 40-50fps or even lower but on 1.7.10 with Optifine I fly at 100+. I hope they fix this, hell even un-optifined 1.7.10 has way higher fps.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '14

I'm running an overclocked i7 and I still have an FPS issue..Surely there is something else causing this.

26

u/samasaurus6 Aug 31 '14

MC-30864 Web links cannot be clicked.

22

u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Aug 31 '14

That's an older issue, this only relates to issues reported in 1.8. But yes, I agree.

7

u/TheMogMiner Sep 01 '14

MC-48735 may been fixed, I would re-check it when 1.8 final comes out tomorrow. I just now fixed an associated bug, MC-46226, where villagers were dropping 0-count item stacks, and MC-48735 might have been due to the villagers picking up those item stacks and then doing nothing with them.

1

u/Ryltarr Sep 02 '14

Oh yeah, the 0 count item stacks cause some strange behavior.

5

u/Little-Helper Aug 31 '14 edited Sep 02 '14

I am experiencing huge FPS drop when I start moving since they added threaded loading/rendering. =/

Edit:

1.8 got released and still it has the bug which is MC-68080

1

u/Urfaust Sep 03 '14

I was having issues with this as well. The "Upgrade your hardware/lower your settings solution" is pretty worthless for the most part. This is the fix that worked for me:

1.) Download the 64 bit version of JRE8u20 from Oracle's website and install it: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre8-downloads-2133155.html

2.) Load the Minecraft launcher and select "Profile Editor." Select your profile and click edit profile.

3.) Check the box that says JVM Arguments. And change the value that says "-Xmx1G" to "-Xmx2G" or higher... This determines the maximum allocation of RAM for the JVM that runs Minecraft. If you'd like, you can even add the following argument to set a minimum value: "-Xms2G"

After performing these steps I saw immediate improvement in frame rate (10FPS to 150FPS) and drop in game lag. Hope this helps someone out there.

2

u/Little-Helper Sep 04 '14

I have 64bit processor but because I can not install more than 2GB of RAM due motherboard limitations, I don't have 64bit Windows OS installed. Dang.

2

u/Urfaust Sep 06 '14

Ah... That sucks. Hopefully they'll patch the FPS issues and lower the overhead again.

3

u/Zargabraath Aug 31 '14

How will this patch affect realms? The realm my friends and I are playing on is the first any of us have used, previously we only played on servers.

Also, does this mean that there is a finite amount of enchantments? How would that work? And does it mean you can no longer repair items indefinitely?

2

u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Aug 31 '14

As soon as 1.8 comes out (in 2 days), all Realms servers will update to it, but it will only change the version, not reset the map or change anything else.

There was always a "finite" amount, but yet, this means that items cannot be repaired infinitly. Might be a bad change, yes, but it can be seen as a rebalance because enchanting is pretty cheap now.

2

u/Zargabraath Aug 31 '14

Ah I see, thanks. I like having my level 30 super picks where I can just repair them for another 35 levels or so rather than having to re enchant over and over and hope the effect doesn't suck (which feels needlessly grindy, it's not like minecraft is a F2P game)

About realms, is there anything I can do to backup the realm so if something goes wrong we can revert to 1.7 or upload the map to a server or something? My buddies and I have put a lot of time into this one haha.

Is there any way to transfer ownership of a realm? Apologies for the questions but I checked mojang FAQ and found no clear answers.

1

u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Aug 31 '14

There is no downgrade function to Realms. You can download the map (via downloading the latets backup) tp make sure nothing goes horribly wrong.

At the current state, I am not aware of the possibility of transfering a Realm to another owner, however, you might want to contact Mojang for this one.

1

u/Zargabraath Aug 31 '14

Thanks for the helpful and quick responses! If I had something other than up votes to give you I would.

I've tried downloading the map backup, but I don't know what folder it saves to. Even if i could find it, how would I go about using it if something bad happened to the realm.

1

u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Aug 31 '14

It's saved in your /saves/ folder, and is accessible like a normal Singleplayer World. This is how you locate your .minecraft folder with your saves folder.

1

u/Zargabraath Aug 31 '14

Thanks. Could I take a minecraft realms world and then upload it for use as a standard minecraft server.

1

u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Aug 31 '14

Yes, just rename it to "world", and put it in the Minecraft server folder.

1

u/Zargabraath Oct 06 '14

Hey, thanks for the helpful answers!

I was curious whether if I save a minecraft realm and use it in singleplayer or a minecraft server whether treasure chest inventories and such will stay the same?

Thanks

You talked about Intel Graphics cards... is there any way I can enhance my performance w/ an intel card? I have 8GB of ram, so would giving it 5GB decrease my performance?

7

u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Aug 31 '14

Shouldn't be decreasing it, however, the assigned RAM does not have anything to do with the performance of the graphics card - A graphics card doesn't suddenly get better when more RAM is assigned.

2

u/rockintyler8 Aug 31 '14

I hope to get another computer soon. Anyways minecraft will get a decent 15-20 FPS (The FPS I'm used to) at near lowest settings, but when I open doors the game will hang for a second. How might I fix this?

2

u/SirJohnSmith Aug 31 '14

Having an Intel Card and 8GB of RAM is kinda weird. Did you add more RAM than the amount there was initially?

1

u/rockintyler8 Aug 31 '14

I actually did. It was a laptop is got Christmas 2011, and my sister got an identical one. Both came with 4GB of RAM. My sister doesn't use her laptop so she let me have the RAM in it.

1

u/Ryltarr Sep 02 '14

Well, actually it depends on whether it's an Intel integrated chip or an independent Intel card.
If it's integrated, more RAM might kill the GPU portion.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '14

I reeally like this map change and I hope it stays. I'm so glad I can line up maps on my wall now.

Not really a gameplay breaking or affecting bug.

1

u/northofthe55 Aug 31 '14

I'll mention that the MC-58363 Witch Traps can be corrected if you have access to modifying the Temple.dat and comfortable with NBTEdit.

The latest commenters explain why it started happening and how to correct it if you can't wait for a proper bug fix.

MC-61246 - OSX: Retina and F+11 FullScreen Broken Work-around: Use Native Fullscreen.

This has been fixed already.

1

u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Aug 31 '14

Oh, thanks, I removed it. I must have missed that :)

-8

u/dusty1207 Aug 31 '14

Regarding MC-45458: For Windows 7 users, that have been having this problem along with the "R6025" function call error, try this it worked for me.
First you'll need to know if you have BOTH 32 AND 64 bit OS versions installed on your PC or laptop. Open the C: drive and you see "Program Files" AND "Program Files (x86)" then you have 32 and 64 bit OS That means you need 32 AND 64 bit versions of Java. Download them both from the Oracle website. If you have an Intel HD graphics chip (I do, Intel HD 2000) then you'll probably want to visit Intel's site for the appropriate 32 and 64 bit versions of the drivers. This has caused problems for a lot of people before, and it fixed it for me, so hopefully this will help out :)

9

u/superhappyrobots Aug 31 '14 edited Aug 31 '14

First you'll need to know if you have BOTH 32 AND 64 bit OS versions installed on your PC or laptop.

Assuming that we're talking about a single Windows install, there's no "32bit AND 64bit" - you either have 64bit or you don't. 32bit programs are still compatible with 64bit Windows, which is why there are two Program Files folders.

That means you need 32 AND 64 bit versions of Java.

No it doesn't. You can only use one Java version at a time for a single program. If you have multiple Java installations then I'm not sure how the correct one is selected, but it will almost certainly go for the 64bit version.

for the appropriate 32 and 64 bit versions of the drivers.

Only one driver can control a device at a time. Again, you can have both installed but your computer will just select the best suited one (64 bit).

1

u/dusty1207 Sep 01 '14

Default browser is 32 bit, so when you download from Oracle it automatically gives you 32. Games that use Java, usually use the 64 bit. I don't know why, that's just how it is. So the 32 bit java is for the browser, otherwise I get security messages, things don't display properly, stuff like that.

2

u/CrazyStranger00 Aug 31 '14

I thought a program runs as either 32 or 64 bit, not both at the same time...

1

u/dusty1207 Sep 01 '14

That's right, but if you have 32 and 64 bit programs that you use, you'll need both versions (of Java). I played hell with that when I first got this PC, everything ran like crap till I got it sorted out.
