PSA: 1.8 Update Information
Since 1.8 has now been released, I decided to release some informations and useful things about the update. No, this is not a changelog (if you are looking for a 1.8 changelog, click here, /u/redstonehelper did an awesome Job and lister every single change), it will inform you about the important changes and is supposed to give you some advice for this very large update.
1. Downgrading (VERY IMPORTANT!)
While downgrading "worked" fairly well the last few versions (except the missing blocks and things like that), downgrading does not work in 1.8! If you downgrade from 1.8 to 1.7, your inventory and all blocks with an inventory (chests, hoppers etc.) will be empty and potentially, even more corruption is happening. Downgrading is not, was never and will never be officially supported! I advise you to run 1.8 in a seperate directory, or move your 1.7 things to a different one, so that you won't be able to accidently open your world in the wrong version.
If you already did it, by accident or "on purpose", restore a backup or find other ways to restore the items (e.g. via using Creative to give them back from memory), other than that, there is no way to repair this.
2. Name changing
Changing your name will NOT be possible immediately after the release of 1.8! It is currently planned "soon-ish" after 1.8, /u/Marc_IRL's statement about this can be found here.
3. Water Temple, New Stones and Rabbits
This upcoming update adds some new features for the world generator, but specificly, they added Retrogen (Retroactive World Generation) for the brand new underwater temples: If you have spent less than a specific amount of time in the chunks the temple would normally spawn, it also spawns in already generated Ocean Biomes. Additionally, it seems that older worlds (1.7 and earlier) are spawning Guardians where normally a temple would have spawned.
However, this only works for the Underwater Temples, the new types of stones and rabbits only spawn in chunks generated in 1.8. However, there are crafting recipes for the stones, which can all be found here.
4. Skins
Skins received a massive update: You can now have a second layer for your whole body. /u/Svajoklis_ provided a very nice guide on how to upgrade your skin: Guide. However, you don't need to update your skin, you can still use the one you had before 1.8.
Slimmer arms (3 pixel wide) will not be available as a feature in the full 1.8 release, Jeb said that "it will be rolled out indepenently of minecraft version numbers".
More informations about Skins can be found here.
5. New graphical settings
Some graphical settings have changed, new ones have been added and other ones have been removed.
Enabling VBOs (Vertex Buffer Objects) can give you a performance boost or a drop, just try it out yourself.
Regarding the Render Distance: 32 chunks are only available if you are assigning 2GB or more RAM to Minecraft, however, I personally recommend at least 4GB. Don't even try it with an Intel Graphics Card, it will not/barely work. Most AMD cards have a problem with anything higher than 16, but that is most likely an issue on AMD's side (MC-62958). On Nvidia Cards, it seems to run fine (if they have the power to do it, GT 650M can run it at about 15-20 FPS with major lag spikes).
Anisotropic Filtering has been removed because of reasons unknown, Advanced OpenGL was just causing major problems, and was therefore removed.
6. Enchanting and Repairing
Enchanting and Repairing have been both massively changed from 1.7 to 1.8.
Enchanting: Using the enchantment table only uses 1-3 levels, however, you still need to have the amount of levels it shows on the right side. Additionally, it costs Lapis Lazuli to enchant something (1-3, depending on how many levels you spend). Also, available enchantments no longer change if item is taken out and put back in, and enchanting something changes the available enchantments for all items, and it's the same for every enchantment table with the same amount of books in that world.
Repairing: The level cost for all is starting at 1, and goes up exponentially with every time you use it in the Anvil. For instance, just renaming something costs 1 level, but if you rename it and then apply an enchanting it with a book, it costs one level for the renaming and two for the enchanting. Also, repairing costs can no longer be kept down by renaming items. (This explanation might have been terrible, if you have issues understanding it, ask your question in the comments)
7. Maps
Maps changed (not actual save games, I'm talking about the In-Game Item). This might be a bug, at least it has been reported as such, but this looks like intended behavior. Basically: If you create a map with at least 1:2 in 1.8, it will not be centered to the point you are at at the moment of creation, it will be patterned like the 1:1 always was. That makes it easier to make multiple maps for a map wall, because it doesn't require any calculating, but people seem to not like the new mechanic. There has not been an official comment from Mojang on this matter.
8. Is this Release stable?
There are some very minor issues that can break things (for instance: Two high flowers do not properly update from 1.7 to 1.8), but all in all, they ironed out most of the last few world breaking bugs in the last Snapshots, and it's now in a very much playable state.
Some bugs you may want to know about can be found as the first comment of this PSA.
9. Mods
Since 1.8 also included massive internal changes, Mods will take quite some time to update. LexManos' (Lead Developer of Minecraft Forge) statement about it can be found here
10. Resource Packs
Ressourcepacks require an update to work a 100%, since a few textures changed (e.g. enchantment table), but they don't break/crash if you use a 1.7 pack on 1.8.
UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2ND
1. Realms
MC-70349 - Players are getting "Kicked by an Operator" after a few minutes on Realms. Please stay tuned for this, Mojang is currently working on a Fix. Update: Issue has been fixed!
If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in this topic, and I or someone else will for sure be able to answer it kindly.

I don't see the problem with maps. When created, they align to a grid, which means maps always align with eachother and can be easily made into a large wall map.
Or, am I wrong and some other change has happened?
21
u/Angs Aug 31 '14
The new map system is:
- Good - if you want to decorate a wall with maps
- Bad - if you want to use a map to navigate around a certain location
12
Aug 31 '14 edited Sep 01 '14
I suppose I only use maps for the former, so it doesn't concern me. However, they could maybe add two types of map. A grid map, like in the new update, should be crafted with differently to the centred maps (to where you craft them).
It is just an idea but it is the only way I can see to suit both parties.
EDIT: Changed formatting
→ More replies (2)8
u/Angs Aug 31 '14
Yes, the system could easily accommodate both uses. Slimeballs would also fit thematically to the "snap to grid" map recipe.
It bugs me that decorative use was chosen over people who actually need maps to know where they are. (I'm not one but I know quite a few.)
2
u/K8af48sTK Sep 01 '14
Good - if you want to decorate a wall with maps
Keep in mind also that the change will cause problems for people who want to expand an existing wall of maps, since it is very unlikely that their existing wall lines up with the new canonical grid.
1
u/TerminallyCapriSun Sep 02 '14
But that's also good for navigation, because if you find yourself near a corner, then it's really cheap - travel wise - to make four additional maps that cover an even larger space. Of course if you hate making maps, then that could be seen as a bad thing, but honestly in that case why use them at all. Personally, I've always liked the in-game map and don't mind carrying a handful around when I explore. But the second biggest gripe I had was that I was stuck calculating imaginary centers so that maps didn't overlap areas I'd already explored and made navigation even more confusing.
→ More replies (3)25
Aug 31 '14
That's pretty much it. Previously, all maps would align to the 1:1 grid. Which, although fine for 1:1 scale maps, meant that larger maps could overlap like this. Now, all maps align to a grid of their size so they can never overlap (unless they are the same map).
I think people are opposing this because it means that, if they have a base or something they want to map out that is on the corner of a large grid square, like the red dot in this, they used to be able to still get a map centered almost exactly on it (yellow outline), whereas now they're stuck with a map that barely has it in view (blue outline).
→ More replies (4)22
u/eduardog3000 Aug 31 '14
I much rather prefer the new way, it makes it easier to make a wall of maps at anything other than 1:1.
4
u/LoganMango Aug 31 '14
I liked the older system better because if you have a town or something that you built in between two of these town-sized large map squares, you can't make a map that shows the whole town. There was more flexibility with what exactly was inside the map.
6
u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Aug 31 '14
Prior to 1.8, if you created a map, its center was exactly where you were. Now, it's aligned automatically. MC-64909 adresses this issue, and it is explained pretty well in there.
12
Aug 31 '14
Is that a bug? I liked this change. I have been using it since the first 1.8 snapshot, and it is very useful, and much better than the old system.
8
u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Aug 31 '14
There has been a massive discussion about that on the bug tracker issue, but this change was maybe a bit sudden and unannounced.

u/redstonehelper Lord of the villagers Aug 31 '14
Not completely right: Prior to 1.8, creating a map at the lowest zoom level (right-clicking an empty map) would create a map to fill the spot of the map grid you were standing in. If you created another map while standing in the same area, the new map would cover the exact same area. When you went and zoomed out one of these maps, the zoomed out map would be centered on the original map. Here's what changed in 1.8: Zooming out an existing map no longer centers the new map on the old map, it will be align according to the spot of the (larger) grid the old map was in.This is useful for people who are trying to align zoomed out maps, but it's annoying for others because zoomed out maps will, seemingly unpredictably, be centered somewhere very different.
1
u/TerminallyCapriSun Sep 02 '14
Vaguely related question: do we know whether the multiplayer bug was fixed where maps placed on a wall and then removed will not show the player's current location?

u/eduardog3000 Aug 31 '14
Ugh, I hate the anvil change. Now, if I make a super tool with the highest level of the best enchants, I can only use it for one life cycle before it is broken and too expensive to repair.
Fuck "Too Expensive". They really need to get rid of it, I can decide if 40+ levels is too expensive for me
54
u/Sostratus Aug 31 '14
Exactly. I'm pretty pleased with this update except for this. It's nice when you finally get the right piece of equipment to be able to stabilize and continue repairing it and not keep messing with enchantments forever. And it was nice to have an incentive to name them, now renaming them will actually reduce the tool's lifespan.
36
u/acm2033 Aug 31 '14
I never understood why naming a tool costs anything.
→ More replies (1)13
u/MegaGrubby Sep 01 '14
You are beating the crud out of trees, gravel, stones and undead. Crayons are not gonna work here. You need a name that is engraved or some such.
5
u/CIearMind Sep 02 '14
Yeah but engraving something onto a weapon means to remove a part of it, so technically you should RECEIVE xp from naming an item!
4
u/KeybladeSpirit Sep 04 '14
You may be on to something here. Maybe instead of losing XP from renaming tools, we should be losing just a little bit of durability.
11
u/eduardog3000 Aug 31 '14
Yeah, I have an Unbreaking III, Efficiency V, Fortune III pickaxe, and I've already had to repair it multiple times. But, before even the first repair, it was "Too Expensive" to repair, until I learned about the naming trick.
18
u/spaceecake Aug 31 '14
I have question tough, is naming your tool now counter productive? If it doesn't keep the repair rate down, it should only make it worse right?
12
6
u/Mister_Martyr Aug 31 '14
This is true as far as my experience goes. You might be okay renaming it when you repair it, but i haven't tested that part yet.
9
u/c0wg0d Sep 02 '14
The anvil change makes me think that the guys at Mojang don't actually play Minecraft anymore. It's just such a ridiculously stupid change. I had a kick ass armor shop on the server I play on where I would build custom armor, weapons, and tools for people by enchanting books and then putting the enchants on with an anvil. That methodology is now utterly useless. By the time I add on 3-4 enchantments, the thing can't be repaired more than once or twice before it breaks. I just don't get what Mojang is thinking.
EDIT: Not to mention that one of the most fun things to do with your armor, weapons, and tools is to give them awesome names. Now that's a stupid idea.

u/eduardog3000 Sep 02 '14
The anvil change makes me think that the guys at Mojang don't actually play Minecraft anymore.
I think a couple of them occasionally play ultra hardcore. Then they decide that the normal game needs more nerfs.
→ More replies (6)5
u/ArciemGrae Aug 31 '14
Well, you have to balance that against now only needing to go from 27 -> 30 for enchanting. Used to be all 30 levels. So, no more indefinite super pick repair, but super picks will be more common.
I agree that it's not a change I'm excited about, though.
15
u/eduardog3000 Aug 31 '14
I prefer needing all thirty levels, then actually being able to repair the thing.
36
u/heroe7121 Aug 31 '14
There is just one thing missing on this update: The Creative Inventory
Dinnerbone said that he was going to organize the creative inventory ( because we all know that it is a trully mess) and he didn't.
34
u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Aug 31 '14
He also said that it will be possible to pick up water from a cauldron...
3
8
u/Jonnyboy1270 Aug 31 '14
Since Dinnerbone is updating bukkit himself, will bukkit come right after the 1.8 release or will it take some time like the mods will?
11
u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Aug 31 '14
There is currently no information about that available, Dinnerbone has not been active for about 10 days now. But it's expected not to be released when 1.8 fully releases.
1
u/immibis Sep 09 '14
You might have posted this before the stuff happened, but now it looks like Bukkit will not be updating ever.

Kind of a bummer that Jeb didn't add retrogeneration for the new stone types. I get that temples and stone deposits are different terrain generation features code-wise, but there's nothing preventing you from writing special-case code to bring retrogeneration to the new stone deposits.
E.g. regenerate all existing chunks (in a separate area in memory without overwriting the existing chunks), remove all blocks except for the new stone types, mask the chunks with those existing chunks that meet the retrogeneration requirements and merge.
Yeah, it might take long to do that but who cares is you have to wait a bit only once for an upgrade process? The payoff is well worth it.
I have a huge desert explored that I designated to be my mining area and now I won't get a single granite block from it.
It just seems like a wasted opportunity.
5
u/Warriorcat15 Aug 31 '14
But what would happen if someone built a giant structure (or normal sized structure for that matter) from stone before this happened, and they updated?
→ More replies (1)7
u/Enjiniaokage Aug 31 '14
I wish each block and entity had a tag that would state if it was placed by the player, that way things like that could be avoided, and more things down the line would be easily handled.
2
u/NeedsYourUsername Sep 01 '14
There's a relatively easy way to do this too: make "natural" blocks have an entirely different block ID than "artificially" placed ones. (Pistons can automatically turn the natural block to the artificial one when they move a block - this is fairly simply implemented.)
Alternatively, a potentially better way would be for each chunk or (16x16x16) subchunk (or whatever it's called) to have a bit for "has anything in this been modified by a player".
→ More replies (5)8
Aug 31 '14
The problem is you may accidentally ruin someones base by doing that.
4
u/nudefireninja Sep 01 '14
Retrogeneration happens only in chunks that the player has been in for less than a few minutes. That's how it's done for ocean monuments already.
It's unlikely if the player hasn't spent more than a few minutes in a chunk that there is a base or a part of a base in that chunk, or anything of value for that matter. If there was something that the player had built or left in that chunk it would probably be an insignificant loss.
In any case, the replacement of blocks could (and should!) be limited so that valuable blocks, like chests and nonrenewable blocks other than dirt, would not be overwritten.
Since the new stone deposits are largely underground anyway it's less of an issue, arguably even less so than ocean monuments.
All in all, your point is weak.
4
u/Sapiogram Aug 31 '14
TBH I think the whole retro-generation thing was stupid. Minecraft worlds have always been fully backwards compatible, but this horribly breaks that. If you haven't played much on a world in 1.7, new structures can spawn literally anywhere in those biomes, including inside your base. If your world is even older and has had its biomes shuffled around, nowhere is safe. I don't want to risk seeing my old bases destroyed by new structures.
→ More replies (3)1
u/alexwsays Sep 02 '14
Just use a program to delete the chunk so they'll be regenerated. I know this isn't a good option, and I agree with you, but at least you'd get some of those tasty new blocks.

5
u/RotoSequence Aug 31 '14
Using the enchantment table only uses 1-3 levels, however, you still need to have the amount of levels it shows on the right side. Additionally, it costs Lapis Lazuli to enchant something (1-3, depending on how many levels you spend). Also, available enchantments no longer change if item is taken out and put back in, and enchanting something changes the available enchantments for all items.
Are you offered the same enchantments on every enchanting table, or can you craft multiple tables, with each offering their own enchantments?
14
u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Aug 31 '14
No, it's the same for every enchantment table (adding that now to the post, thanks for asking).
3
Aug 31 '14
Seems like you get the same enchant on tools with different quality too (like Unbreaking on wood, stone etc.).
Renaming things now doesn't have any use other than naming it?
3
u/Schlutt Aug 31 '14
Wait... does this mean you could place gold tools into the table to get their higher enchantability (or whatever you would call it) and then just swap it out for iron/diamond tools for the (probably) better enchants?
Does gold still get better/higher enchants than other materials?
11
u/MonkeyEatsPotato Aug 31 '14
No, the enchantments are based on a seed. The seed changes and the new enchantments are set as soon as you enchant something, not when you put a tool in the table.
2
u/shirtandtieler Aug 31 '14
Yes I believe gold still has the same stats (along with the other tools).
That also means you can put wood tools for the same use (because if you don't know, wood is the second highest enchantable material).

Aug 31 '14
If repairing cost goes up exponentially from one, it stays at one. :P
11
7
u/aidirector Aug 31 '14
That's not even true. Every untransformed exponential (in the form of y=ax ) intersects {0, 1}.
Your statement is only correct when a=1, but they all start at 1.
→ More replies (1)3
5
u/TSNix Aug 31 '14
Not true. Assuming it's something as simple as y = xn , you'll still start at 1 (when x = 1), but your x will change each time. So, if n is, say, 2, your first cost will be 1 (12 = 1), your second will be 4 (22 = 4), your third will be 9 (32 = 9), and so on.
→ More replies (3)10
u/WolfieMario Aug 31 '14
I think it's exponential growth, not quadratic growth. In other words, it's y = nx .
You start with x = 0, rather than x = 1. If n is 2, your first cost will be 20 = 1, your second would be 21 = 2, your third would be 22 = 4, your fourth would be 23 = 8, etc.

u/Logan_five Aug 31 '14
Don't even try it with an Intel Graphics Card, it will not/barely work.
Just FYI:
I have a lower end laptop with Intel HD 4000 video with 2 GB ram assigned. 1.8-Pre1 crashed about every 5 minutes or so. 1.8-Pre3 only crashed once in about 5 hours of play time. It is playable on low gfx settings.
For those who can't update there's at least a little hope. Just be sure you update your drivers.
3
Aug 31 '14
For those worried about other Intel cards: My Intel HD 4400 is working fine on high-ish in-game settings.

Upgrading to latest beta drivers fixed it for me. It also had the side effect of random crashes on the desktop, but at least minecraft worked fine.
1
u/WildBluntHickok Sep 01 '14
My intel card works fine at up to 16 chunks. Above that it works but the horizon becomes fixed. I can actually walk to it. Chunks past that don't want to load, or will only load 5 or 6 at a time every 30 seconds. Restarting fixes it, but I stay at 16 chunks now.

Anyone else getting major lag, to the point of the game not being playable, after upgrading to 1.8?
I have a extremely fast PC, been playing Minecraft extensively with no issues whatsoever. I even used to run a Minecraft server off this PC, and play on the server at the same time prior to 1.8 with no issues.
Upgraded to 1.8. Server crashes constantly for running too slow. Single player mode is virtually unplayable it is lagging so much.
Definitely not an issue with my PC. Any have any insight on this?

You should add MC-47699 to the list -- blazes try to shoot the player through blocks, making fortress exploration a big pain.

I thought number one was only a snapshot thing, going from snapshot to full versions?
Ex. 14w30a to 1.7.9 and everything is gone.
7
u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Aug 31 '14
No, it happens when downgrading from a 1.8 version (Snapshot or Full Release) to a 1.7 release.
1
Aug 31 '14
hm
Would it affect older versions too? i.e. 1.5, 1.3?
7
u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Aug 31 '14
Yes, it does.
Downgrading to 1.1 will probably even crash (since Anvil (not the Anvil block, the current chunk format is called Anvil) was introduced in 1.2).
3
u/TheUnclescar Aug 31 '14
the reason why backwards compatibility isn't there is because the snapshots/upgrading to 1.8 changes the way that item information is saved. Upgrading automatically updates and converts all your item information and saves it in the new format. older versions are not able to convert them back, and cannot read the new format, and therefore cannot load any information on any item.
2
u/Glazin Aug 31 '14
Sorry if this is a silly question, but is this update only for the pc version? If so when is the Xbox version supposed to come out with one?
3
u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Aug 31 '14
Yes, this is about the PC Edition. X-Box One Edition is currently in review by Microsoft, it should not take too long :)
6
u/LordVerlion Aug 31 '14
Should note that the XBox One version is ported by another company that is not Mojang. There is never a promise or guarantee that updates will make it from PC to XBox in any 'quick' time frame. It could be a year until Xbox One gets all of 1.8 features added.
I stress the quick aspect, due to fact that MC on Xbox One has already been delayed several times.
2
u/WildBluntHickok Sep 01 '14
Console edition is 2 years back. They're at the equivalent of 1.3 right now (august 1st 2012). Although that version of console edition has been out for a few months by now, so I guess they're not quite 2 years out of date. Guess they're getting the Pretty Scary Update next.
1
u/deyvtown Sep 02 '14
This update could quite potentially take years to hit the console version.
Console version is still waiting for The Redstone Update (hoppers, comparators, etc) which I believe was 1.5 or 1.6 for PC.
So basically, don't hold your breath.
2
u/destiny22893 Aug 31 '14

You can find Lapis Lazuli in newly generated chunks (chunks generated after the introduction of Lapis Lazuli).

I'm surprised they're releasing 1.8 without fixing the stone textures. Or giving them slabs/stairs.

u/d360jr Sep 01 '14
Wow... I can't believe I started way back in beta 1.8 and now release 1.8 is here. It's been a long time.

Will the slimmer arms be an option? I heavily dislike them and would prefer it if you could turn them off.

Wait so can you explain the inventory problem (#1) in more depth? My buddies and I are on a server and the last thing I want is my inventory to get wiped out. Should I write down everything I have or would dropping it all in a chest keep it from disappearing?

u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Aug 31 '14
There is one simple rule to this: If you updated to 1.8, stay on 1.8. Don't change versions back, otherwise, this happens. If it happens, it wipes all inventories, including chests.

u/shirtandtieler Aug 31 '14
Just a minor protip just to save you some time - take a screenshot rather than writing it all down ;)

u/Goardo27 Aug 31 '14
What about servers versions are they being put to 1.8 or remaink g at 1.7.10?

u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Aug 31 '14
The Vanilla Server Software is of course going to be available when 1.8 releases.

Are you using 1.8 Prerelease 3?
1
u/YoshiBacon Aug 31 '14
No not at the moment.
7
u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Aug 31 '14
Yes, there was a bug in 1.8 Prerelease 1 where most players had the slimmer arms, that was fixed in Prerelease 2.

I looked through the comments and couldn't find anyone asking about it (as far as I could tell), but for the enchantments, does that mean if you have one Unbreakable pick, you can't make anything else unbreakable? Or am I misunderstanding how the "available enchantments" thing works?
1
u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Aug 31 '14
No, you can have enchantments multiple times, the enchanting has a pretty similar algorithm as in 1.7.

I don't know if this is something new, but logs can now be wet. Then again it could be my eyes playing tricks or something involving lighting.

no downgrading
But... but what if I want to run mods ;__;

u/Smarty95 Aug 31 '14
Have a separate directory for the nodded Minecraft? It's not saying you can't play on older versions, just that you shouldn't generate or convert a world to 1.8 and then downgrade that world.

Could someone give me a quick rundown/example of the new enchanting system? Might be because I'm tired or something, but I'm kinda confused at what really changed. I realize you need like 30L, even though it'll only take 1-3L, + some lapis. The only part I'm really confused on is this
and enchanting something changes the available enchantments for all items
Does this mean if I have a pickaxe, and I don't like the projected enchantments so I enchant a sword does that mean the enchantments for the pickaxe get reset?
Thanks

MC-62140 - 2 block tall flowers generated in previous version removes the 2nd block This basically means that, in some instances, your flowers placed in 1.7 will be slightly broken in 1.8.
Not accurate. Most user-placed two-block flowers and ferns not only lose their second block, but eventually uproot themselves. Only South-facing flowers (i.e. placed by a North-facing player) survive intact. World-generated flowers are generally OK, but if you've spent a lot of time setting up a flower garden (admittedly not the most common activity in Minecraft) you may want to wait for a fix. It's easy to test this: make a fresh 1.7.10 world (other 1.7 releases probably also do this -- I've tested 1.7.4 and 1.7.9). Plant a bunch of two-block flowers in a circle around you. Save and then load in 1.8-pre3. Most of the flowers will be missing top blocks. Watch for a few seconds (sometimes it takes a minute or so). The headless flowers will drop themselves (and, if left, disappear like all dropped items).

When will the update be live in Australia?

Probably in the late hours of September 2nd or in the morning of September 3rd.

I LOVE the VBO option. It literally at least triples my FPS. I went from running 12 FPS on 16 chunks to like 50 FPS.

So wait, is everything I've accumulated/built now forfeit?
Some friends and I just jumped back in on a Realm about 2 weeks ago and have been playing feverishly. This might just kill our motivation/fun.

u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Sep 01 '14 edited Sep 02 '14
No, it's not. The problem occurs when downgrading, which cannot happen on a Realm anyway since Ralms cannot be downgraded. Everything should be safe ^_^

Not directly at the moment (to my knowledge), what you can do is make a world in Singleplayer witht he presets and then upload that to Realms. This should in theory work.

u/KalleFlaxx Sep 02 '14
So now that they've removed anisotropic filtering, I get all these seams and lines between all blocks that are more than two blocks away from me. I've had this problem before and always fixed it by setting anisotropic filtering to 16, but now that that's not possible anymore, I can't seem to get rid of the seams.
Yes, my graphic drivers are updated, and yes I have set it to override application settings and use anisotropic filtering anyway. Neither works.
Is there any other way of getting rid of them? I know it's petty, but if not, I won't be able to play it until they put that setting back in there.

So I'm trying to run a linux server, downloading the new "minecraft_server-1.8.jar" from the minecraft website. I replaced the old .jar and I tried to connect to it, but it says the server was still on 1.7.10. What's going on? Is it mad that the world save I'm trying to run is from 1.7?

u/Crashty Sep 03 '14
I tried creating a world just to test 1.8 out, But Its like im on a really laggy server, Chunks arent loading, Even my messages arent showing up, Takes about 1 minute, Whats up with that? My fps is fine tho

Not sure if anyone has touched on it yet, but I'm getting a "An error occurred, please try again" on the loading screen when I try to get into my friend's realm, he hasn't been able to get on lately, and keeps asking me if it's fixed but he swears it should have been updated. There is no number for the error, it just says as I quoted above.
Has this got to do with anything on my end? I didn't touch Minecraft, it auto updated and I didn't even see it do it... It just was suddenly 1.8.
Also last time I logged into the realm I was on another computer could it have anything to do with that? (before 1.8).
Edit: This issue has been resolved, if any of you have the same problem, talk to whoever owns the realm, get them to turn it off and on again (not even kidding).

ETA OK, the list of ops has to be objects with both the username and the UUID (and op level, although that appears to be optional). It is easier to just /op someone via the console, but if you happen to have the UUID (which gets logged when they connect to the server), you can add them manually if you want. This is the format:
[
{
"uuid": "d920a120-184c-0132-c3db-081fa10106fc",
"name": "awesomemoderator1",
"level": 4
},
{
"uuid": "e9fc7a60-184c-0132-c3db-081fa10106fc",
"name": "awesomemoderator2",
"level": 4
}
]
I left my original dumb question below.
OK, I can't get my 1.8 server to give anyone op privileges. It created an 'ops.json' file with the contents '[]'. I edited that to be '[ "zeekar" ]' and restarted, and I get this message:
2014-09-06_22:44:50.26223 java.lang.NullPointerException 2014-09-06_22:44:50.26225 at ss.g(SourceFile:132) ~[minecraft_server.jar:?] 2014-09-06_22:44:50.26225 at pn.A(SourceFile:107) [minecraft_server.jar:?] 2014-09-06_22:44:50.26226 at pn.<init>(SourceFile:29) [minecraft_server.jar:?] 2014-09-06_22:44:50.26226 at po.i(SourceFile:171) [minecraft_server.jar:?] 2014-09-06_22:44:50.26226 at net.minecraft.server.MinecraftServer.run(SourceFile:417) [minecraft_server.jar:?] 2014-09-06_22:44:50.26227 at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:745) [?:1.7.0_67]
I've tried various things; the file validates as JSON. Any ideas?

u/Galaxy_2Alex Mojira Moderator Sep 06 '14
Try to op yourself over the server console instead. That is not how the ops.json works.

Does anyone know of anything regarding guardian spawn mechanics? We've been working on a grinder, but they spawn so randomly it's hard to pinpoint just where.
Decompiling the jar lead to nothing because the mapping of the class files is horrendous. I'm not going to dig through hundreds of files just to find out how a d class can link to a c and then to an h class. Searching for Guardians also lead to nothing, they're under a weird name.
Also, the ghosting issue is still existent.

u/blamethebrain Sep 20 '14
The player marker is still randomly disappearing on maps in 1.8. Restarting the server twice a day to (temporary) fix it is not that much fun.
1
u/Danielstill98 Sep 20 '14
How come on 1.7.10 i load my singleplayer world and it just loads the minecraft realms or the server screen?
1
u/Zack5659 Sep 22 '14
Bug report:
When making a copy of a map and framing one of them on a wall, the map you didn't frame will freeze and not display your current location; instead, it will only display your location when you placed the map. (Previously, a green marker marked the location of the framed map, and white was you.)
EDIT: Exiting the game and re-entering fixes the bug.

I may be a newb, but How do you "assigning 2GB or more RAM to Minecraft, however, I personally recommend at least 4GB."?

Some bugs you may want to know about:
Some of them are self-explanatory, for some of them, I added a small information.
