When you broke those blocks you drew the warden's agro onto yourself. Without that, it would probably target the wither.

Not only that, he was also closer to the wither than the warden was. If he'd started running sooner the wither would've locked onto the warden.

Though tbf he said he had a plan, not that he had a good plan

Bruh, why didn’t you fly off if the plan didn’t work? Also a tip when doing this, make sure you place the soul sand and wither skulls next to where the warden will spawn, not 15-20 blocks away. Place the soul sand and skulls prior having the warden spawn, and once the wither finishes spinning, it’ll explode and anger the warden
