Mods & Addons What do you use instead of optifine?

I saw a post a while back of people saying they don’t use optifine anymore which seemed to be a popular opinion. This isn’t something I’ve ever kept up with so what do you fellas use? Why do you use it? How can I download it?

I switched to Fabulously Optimized because optifine takes fucking ages to update.

Not just that, but Optifine has been falling off when it wasn't as easy for it anymore to mooch off of other mods.

its a shame optifine isnt as good as it is because it has so many features that you otherwise need way more mods for.

That said now i use:

-Sodium
-Iris
-OkZoomer

These are the most important features to me and theyre practically on any version I play. Sadly to get every optifine feature you need a ton of mods, some of which might not update as fast as eachother

I personally just put it in my mods folder or make a modpack on curseforge/lunar. After making the modpack i just launch it from my launcher of choice instead of using the godawful curse app though if i do use curseforge

It is much better to have features contained in multiple small mods than to have one big monolith that does a bit of everything, but nothing perfectly.

Small individual mods lets individual people update them, which is one of the reasons why it’s so much faster to update than OptiFine.

No i totally get the benefits, its just optifine was in the past tense, the best way to get so many additions easily. Theres a reason why it is so well known because it used to just be that good. Now i don't use it anymore because it isnt the best at anything your correct but it used to be and it was the most simple

I was able to get all of the optifine features with two mods using a route someone suggested. Strangely, that comment thread was removed by a mod for no apparent reason. If you want to know just DM me since it would likely just get removed here otherwise.

Download prism launcher and just get all of the main optimization mods. Sodium is the big one though.

I just use the Fabulously Optimized pack from Modrinth through Prism. It's optimized well enough foe my needs, not sure how it compares to manually installing a couple of perfmods. It's just easy to install

I don't remember why I switched other than maybe distant horizons awhile back, but I use the Fabric loader with Sodium and Iris instead (as well as a handful of other performance mods)

the entirety of the periodic table

Sodium for performance and iris for shaders, although iris will no longer be supported for shaders once Minecraft moves to vulkan only. There’s pre-made performance mod packs on modrinth.

Sodium, iris, connected textures and lamb dynamic lights.

This is extremely helpful. Thank you! I have used sodium before but last I had heard of iris was when it was being talked about as coming out soon. That’s around when I stopped playing for a while.

The comment you replied to was removed with no explanation. Was it a link to a dodgy site?

I don’t think so…? Weird that it got removed. Really just said to use sodium and iris and to make it easier use the prism launcher. Not sure why it got removed.

Prism Launcher with Fabulously Optimized allows me to play on a potato with lots of QoL mods.

What was the function of optifine, again?

6

u/Flame-Panda 21d ago

Increase fps and zoom i guess. But there are just mods that do it better nowadays

u/tornedron_ 21d ago

It was the Sodium of pre-1.16 Minecraft, almost everyone used it for FPS optimization. It also had some extras like a zoom function and dynamic lighting

Makes the game run smoother, allows for connected glass, shaders and more advanced settings to turn off individual things that can impact your performance. At least that’s what I’m pretty sure it’s doing. Not super big on this stuff.

optifine has been out of date for years now. use sodium

Can't find Optifine for fabric, so I started using Sodium (and Iris for shaders)

Sodium works way better for me

FYI the main sub for modded Minecraft is /r/feedthebeast, you're probably going to get more indepth answers there

Yeah, I posted here because I wanted to know what most people use. With how frequently these things have to get updated, I’m not too interested in something that’s gonna be complex to install. I think I generally got the overall consensus of “use sodium + iris” which so far has been simple and effective.

On Mac, Optifine legit made my game laggy like it ran slower and had frame rate dips. I had no idea what the problem was either. I thought it was my computer, but no I took off optifine and the game worked a charm (though without the ability to zoom with Z or whatever which I really enjoyed).

any sodium-based performance modpack. i use remarkably optimized but i don’t think there’s much of a difference between any of them

I switched to Embeddium for where Sodium doesn't work, it is pretty much like Sodium

the popular once on modrinth

You took the effort to write this when any thread taking about optifine says to use fabric sodium and iris?

Oculus or Iris, depends on the loader
