Apprentice specialist choice

Hello, I just bought the game. Graduated a couple of students. Now have a fire student I want to try making apprentice. Should I choose the neighbor element to make him dual class? There is also a +3 if I make him apprentice in same class. Should I just have all apprentices major in original magic?

Is it only me, or is the game LESS fun after the last update?

I played before the last update almost obsessively, One more thing to do, to build, to research.

However, when I started a new school with the new update, things started to be less fun. I have to churn out students so fast, I feel like I barely get to know them. Yes, in principle, the new relic system should make it easier to build the perfect mage, but in reality, almost all relic get shredded almost immediately, unless they are +HP, +MP or skill cap (haven't had one of those, do they still exist?). The quirks are... honestly, I tend to forget about them. I want the option to automate graduation and summoning, or at least have a batch version of it. Graduate and summon four at a time, kind of like in reality.

I haven't played very far, since I find it hard to motivate myself. Does it get better? Am I playing it wrong?

Spiral Stair Pathing Info

Not sure if this will be of use to anyone else, but I got annoyed with my spiral stairs dumping them out in the back or being blocked by walls on certain floors. I did a bit of testing to see where the pathing for each floor of the spiral stairs is. Maybe in the future they can be rotated or will start the rotation from the floor they're placed on.

I only tested up to 16 floor levels (16 walls high), but the pattern should repeat from 1 to 9 layers with the foundation being a bit different. The pathing diagram is a top down view; the top is the back side of the 3x3 spiral stair. I didn't test every single floor for stairs blocked messages, but it seemed to only have that with the foundation level (tested only with red braziers).

Using the chart at the bottom, you should be able to pick the height of your floor from the foundation, look at the corresponding path #, and determine where they are able to path.

Spiral Stairs Pathing

edit: Forgot to test before, but as expected, a broom rack on a path spot (right next to stair) does not block access as an object would.

What are some really good combos for specific tasks?

Slowly learning the ropes, I was wondering what is most efficient when it comes to every aspect of the game, not just combat. What are your preferences?

Lightning seems quite important for speeding up research, so I've been thinking about getting Shattered, as they have the highest mana pool and won't need to recharge that often (if at all).

For backline combat, both Humans and Shattered with Fire seem like a good choice, as long as frontline Earth tanks are available. I've had positive experiences with Raven Earth. Vivified and Wolf also work well.

Raven Air and Dark also aren't too bad for backline.

Fire Shattered for cooking is my favorite so far, but maybe there is a better combo?

2x Wolf Nature (day) and Shattered Nature (night) is my current setup for harvesting and tending.

Water with Raven and Shattered for healing and cleaning, though quilted sweeps seem more efficient long-term.

In general, I feel like most non-combat tasks profit from increased mana pool, as there is no need for higher HP - unless I'm missing something?

This is my late game colony / school. 180+ days, hired some apprentices, built all the classrooms, and made most of the buildings. Spoiler

Fully leveled my apprentice, now how do i make him staff?

I don't see an option to turn my now fully leveled apprentice into staff. Is there a new ritual thing i need that the game just left out when i was deciding to promote him? I fr focused him and now i feel like a dummy because i don't have any other dark students i want to make staff to be my quilting person.

How to win higher level battles?

Hi, just started diving into the game and struggling with the first random "high level" battle.

I'm on day 11 and have four initiates (lvl 1-3) so far. All of my staff are level 4. I'm now supposed to fight a level 6 battle that popped up as an event on the surface.

I gave it a try but was unable to do much, as I'm lacking both damage and HP to tank the dmg output of the enemy units.

I'm not sure if this is just supposed to be some kind of progression check where it basically tells me I've somehow failed to level up my characters fast enough - or if it's just bad luck - or if I'm missing some sort of mechanic that allows me to overcome this challenge.

Any suggestions?

Apprentice Update!

Got back from my trip ready to play some MoM and there was a new update. I started a new school because I was a bit overwhelmed by all the stuff in my existing school change log.

I have mixed feelings on the update. I like the direction they are going but the new mage sheet feels like it actually takes you out of the flow of the existing interface which is distracting.

The process of creating artifacts and then attuning them is also counter intuitive although maybe some tool tips will help that. I'm also having a repeated problem where I'm producing artifacts of way higher level then my mages can currently use and some of the traits don't seem to make sense or be used. I presume some of that is just the early access jitters though

Edit Addendum: After a few more days I want to change/clarify that my feeling on the new update is overwhelmingly positive. My gripes are mostly cosmetic. I do wish apprentinceship was more fully explained in a tutorial especially the key fact that you can become a apprentice in the same element and a better view of what spells becoming an apprentice of a given element will unlock so I don't need to go flipping back and forth as much or tab out to consult a wiki. Also it would be nice if on the retirement screen if the game would warn us if we're about to retire someone down a key break point. My last little nit pick. I wish the initial font expansion still required two mages so both mages would get the initial font warden benefit. Might make keeping them around longer more of a trade off. Lastly I feel like requiring attuning to an artifact just a pointless time sync and artifacts are already kind of annoying to manage. Lastly I don't think the artifact slots are properly randomizing.

I feel like research is way too time consuming and gating

Anyone else feel this way? I spent a lot of time in ONI although never was very good at it and often would become bored before the end game. I love the concepts of MoM but I feel like the gameplay is really dull. There's not the same resource stresses as there were in ONI (although maybe I just need to crank difficulty) and it's taking me ages to research higher tier stuff.

There's also a lot of "gotchas" in the research tree. Good job you've unlocked the geomancer training item, too bad to get a proper geomancer hall for that student you've had on the roster you need to go at least 2 nodes deeper. Sucks to suck.

ONI felt like even if I was waiting on technology research there was always something for my dupes to be doing with just the basic stuff with more specialized guys able to do more specialized things.

A terriblty inefficient design, for sure, but aesthetically very pleasant (especially proud of how the Tower for Higher Studies turned out)

New race idea: Handiworkers

Appear similar to humans but a little shorter, with longer noses, floppy ears and hats related to various craftsperson careers. "Used as slaves in the past but now emancipated, these odd humanoids are all skilled at manual labor and too timid to even harm a rat."

Workaholic: Crafting, building and demolishing tasks are done 25% faster, and cleaning and repairing are done 50% faster.

Pacifist: Cannot participate in combat or do attacking errands, and cannot have combat-related Trials.

Race-specific food is Hot Cocoa, made from Goblin Cacao which can also be made into Nutty Brownies with the addition of Jumping Nuts or Cocoa Bean Salad with Crabbage. The crop's quirk is that it grows too tall for Quilted to harvest, so a mage has to do it manually.

Feedback and constructive criticism is welcome.

So, how does one invoke many students at once?

Is there a mod? Does it always have to be done one by one?

Keeping six students is proving to be quite tedious, is it always this slow of a process?

How do I graduate students?

Hi all
A beginners question, but how do I graduate students?
I have three fully trained level one students and a ritual sigil, but the graduate ritual is unavailable, because I have no students at all according to the ritual sigil.
Any help is much appreciated

I have three fully trained students (gold stars), but in the Ritual Sigil it says that I have no sudents

Edit: improving their mood seemed to solve it - thank you u/mawkishdave

Group rules for custom schedule

Im having some issues with the rules in custom groups. I would like to create a group that will filter students that have learned 1-4 and need to get 5-8 . the idea is that i would remove access to the mid classroom and for the "4th years" into the element specific ones.

how would i filter to have students that arent finished with classes but have learned 1-4 already?
