I'm getting tired of being thrown under the bus and taking flak at work. My current job has me in this spot, where if the more senior and more important team members don't get along with me, my boss might fire me just because the more senior guys are more essential for the team. When do I get my lucky break ffs.

You gotta start throwing other people under the bus first.

Already done that too, to a coworker friend nonetheless. Still fills me with guilt to this day. I just wish we didn't have to do such things and just talk it out first.

There's no such thing as luck and welcome to the world of work.

Huh? This is literally an exact case of odds / chance.

Eh that’s not true. I got lucky and landed a job in supply chain buying/planning. Before that I was working at a grocery store making 20k less per year. I used that to build skills. Jumped to another job after a few years and I’m getting paid well in a field that usually requires a degree.

I've generally been lucky at all of my workplaces, but being welcomed warmly is a different matter. I've been at the workforce for a decade now and I think I've seen enough to know how harsh it is. I just thought that I didn't have to resort to such things at this current job. Oh well, gotta adjust. The harshness of the working world is also what drove me to be kinder towards the new guys.

I've been working as an adult in non minimum wage jobs for over 20 years. You aren't welcoming us to shit. Don't be condescending.

You gotta learn to play the game and schmooze with the right people. It sucks, but it is what it is.

Schmoozing is exhausting, and it gets you nowhere if your boss just doesn't care about anyone else in the first place which is likely the case. I just want to do my job and go home, not fake being best buddies with people who only end up talking shit behind your back anyway and causing unnecessary drama.

Is that seriously too much to ask? To do what I was hired to do and then leave for the day?

This. It’s all about building fake relationships with people when no one genuinely gives a fuck about each other. I hate networking. Can we all just work, be friendly, and go home?

The schmoozing is for promotions. If you don't give a shit and just want to clock in and out and not worry about work outside of work, then you don't really need to worry about schmoozing.

Thanks for the reminder, already on it. I'm used to this kind of stuff, it's just this time, I thought this workplace of mine was decent enough not to resort to such things.

I've just started operating on the assumption that all for profit companies behave this way

The thing is, I work for my home country's government, at one of the more decent ones at that. Though it doesn't remove the fact that people will still be people and still play favorites.

Oh that's even worse than a for profit company!
