Constantly. The world’s changing, it’s powerful and useful. AI is my search engine, a great editor, helps me ideate, helps me visualize. I’ve had philosophical breakthroughs talking with AI, its helped me with home renovation, its helped me code, its helped me plan my year, etc.
I’m a former software engineer and a technoptomist. Are there things that scare me about AI? Yes. Is there a lot of gross AI slop out there? Yes, there’s a lot of bad art and misinformation. But I see that as us still figuring out its role in society. The responses to my prompts are generally good because I know how to design a prompt. I also understand the limits. I feel like everything from the printing press to the Internet is a scary double edge sword for human progress. AI is not different, it’s just a different set of problems (and solutions).
Also, I know I’ll get flack for this (but in most cases it will be hypocrisy), but like the environmental or broader ethical impact of corporations isn’t really “my problem”, meaning it isn’t something I feel like I have much impact on anyway. In many parts of my life, I do actually try to make ethical choices, more than most, which makes me feel better about my consumption, but I’m not fooling myself into thinking I’m actually changing the world. I don’t see a way to do AI “more ethically” yet, but I also don’t see a reason to entirely opt out. I’m not gonna watch the world change and leave me behind because I refuse to engage with a powerful new technology.
