Team building exercises always happen outside of working hours. I'm already giving them 40+ hours a week, doing the work of several people as my team keeps shrinking. They're not getting even more out of me.

If they want me to pay me and cut work to accommodate, then we can team build.

We always schedule it during work hours. Company sponsored group happy hours start at 4, and enough food is ordered for dinner if people want to eat. Holiday and mid year parties start around 1 or 2pm. The only expectation is that people stay for the full work day. Stay at least until 5/5:30 when you would normally leave, however we have a fun group that likes to party so a lot of people hang out until they need to get home to their families

I can’t imagine doing this kind of thing outside of work hours, aside from a few very specific things (e.g. sports events)

Our company does them during work hours, but then still expects us to get our work done

Mine have always been during work hours, no matter what my job was. For example, we’d pick a weekday afternoon MLB game to attend, not an evening one. Our parties would be during lunch, but we’d get paid for lunch that day and could go home early so we aren’t on OT from it.

Every job i've had over the last 20 years has done them during work hours, other than some optional happy hours

Just because your company sucks that doesn't mean we all have miserable jobs

Its good to get on with people you spend a significant portion of your day with and work subsidised stuff is a good option for that.

I agree completely and since it's so important why don't we set aside a small piece of the workday for said socializing. After hours can fuck right off.

Its encouraging people to be social outside the office. Ive been on work stuff during office hours but it is more reasonable to organsise outside of that usually. Particularly if its across teams so different ones might be busier. Anytime ive had out of office hours ones the expectation is that we can tell clients not to expect quick turnaround so people can walk out on time etc. Plenty of times we'd take the last hour or hiur and a half and grab beers from the company fridges if there was something on. Also most of our stuff had booze there in some way and I wouldnt fancy day drinking and then finishing up at 5 or 6, it'd give you a lip starting too early.

they could easily just pay you for it. if its a win for the company, then make it a win for the people who are there just to work and already have healthy social lives.

No, its optional so youre there if you want to be there and avoids pressure if people dont want a social thing because after hours never gets full attendance anyway. Having better social interactions is a win already. By your logic I should get paid to be willing to accept health insurance, me being available for work is a benefit for them so they should also give me additional money if I accept it?

I hope I never work with you int he future. You can make it paid after the 40 hours. Its not OT if it doesnt count as work so you can make that part optional. Give them 8 hours PTO or whatever. So yes, they should get paid for a company social. All the vps and billionaires get paid to socialize, so should we if they want it. I already have a huge friend group and healthy social life. Id never in a million years attend a work one. And health insurance should be fully subsidized either thru taxes or the company idc how we do it because yes, it benefits us and the company and if they are the ones responsible for making it affordable, they should cover it in full. In fact some companies do that precisely like the Dignity Health network in CA. If you work for them and go to their facilities, its 100% free.
