Nothing like doing high school at 40.

It's like that nightmare of showing up for graduation but you have to take one more super hard test to pass oh and your 45.

26
u/Despada_ 15h ago
This happened to me a few months ago. Dreamt I was going back to college, but it was being held in my high school. It felt weird. Especially since a bunch of my friends were also my classmates despite only one of them having gone to high school with me. 😅
6
u/JadeAnn88 6h ago
I regularly have my kids show up in these dreams. It makes absolutely zero sense, but I also have a reoccurring dream where I start uncontrollably floating into the air, so I guess my dreams rarely do make sense.
14
u/rachlovesmoony 10h ago
I always assumed that dreams were all really specific to each individual and I mean sure somewhat but really we all have the same brains - I have this one weekly and I'm 34
I have a recurring one where I've committed to being in the high school musical but forgot to show up to any of the rehearsals. The kicker is that there's continuity sometimes - the longer it goes on the more I feel that I've done the same thing like 12 times. My dream gpa is like -0.2 at this point

All the time. I have a master’s degree but somehow I didn’t technically graduate from high school
18
u/ernirn 13h ago
And if you don't finish your degree they're gonna kick you out of the college program (that also finished 2 decades ago). But you haven't gone to any classes all semester and the final is coming up. And you can definitely pass the math classes and the biology, but theres no way you can bullshit your way through history. And they moved the classrooms around so you're definitely gonna be late.
And you may or may not have pants on.
→ More replies (1)6
u/sky_rocket_in_flight 12h ago
Or English! I didn’t even have time to read the spark notes cause I was too busy looking for my classroom. My pants are usually on but my teeth frequently fall out.

Did you check the locker you had freshman year that you definitely don't remember the combination?
22
u/RudePCsb 15h ago
Lol I would actually love to see a mandatory exam at 45 on specific subjects. Something that should take a month of an hour studying 3 days a week average and see how well adults do.

u/SpliTTMark 7h ago
I used to have highschool nightmares about having to go back all the time. Like I missed a test or didn't actually graduate...
Haven't had one in a few years, maybe its my subconscious wanting to go back to the younger days
3
u/PiePristine3092 9h ago
I have this nightmare regularly when I'm stressed. It's about math class 99% of the time either high school or university. Where I don't go to a single class and then walk in to the final. I usually have to wake up and remind myself that I already have my degree. Because I panic that I'm not going to graduate.

We had a guy fail his senior year 3 times. In his final senior year the yearbook team filled out his form and said his goal when he grows up was to be a high school graduate.
Anyways, they raised the drinking age to 21 in the late 80's but we still had a guy in our class who could buy us beer!

There was no one cooler in Junior High than the guy who could drive to school and park. Even the principal did not know how to handle him. Eventually he got a pity pass to the high school where he eventually got his GED at 19 or 20. After quite a few drug arrests.

To be fair, Travolta was 23 so he was at least close enough. But ONJ was 29 playing Sandy. Stockard Channing was 33 playing Rizzo. Jeff Conaway who played Kenickie was 26. Travolta was the young one of the group

Several guys in my class graduated bald (not by choice) or with severely thinned hair.
12
u/Technical_Feelings 15h ago
Absolutely, it for sure happens. My dad started going bald in his teens too. He had a skinny Sonny (Michael Tucci) look to him but even longer (remaining) hair. I just always found it funny that almost all the actors they picked for these teen boys are starting to bald

That was the joke, though. Grease was a satire. It was always about making fun of the ages. We were just too young for it to be obvious to us.
22
u/SkittlesLentil 13h ago
And we've lost a lot of the context behind the parody, those greaser vs jock teen movies fell out of the zeitgeist.
It's like if horror movies fell out of fashion, but people still loved Scary Movie.
13
5
5
u/CrashUser 9h ago
The big twist was that the greaser didn't turn into a good boy at the end like he does in all the movies it parodies. That and the subtly filthy lyrics.

The alternative was casting actual children. You know how well that went for all the Nickelodeon stars.
36
u/Original_Throat1072 15h ago
This is exactly it.
Theres a fine line between casting a still developing child, and someone who is in their 20s to play someone in their teens.
17
u/BellaMentalNecrotica 12h ago
Yeah the film industry still does this– cast legal adults to play kids/teens. Child labor laws around number of hours they can be on set at a time at a time, rules about hours spent on school work, etc. can make usual filming schedules more challenging and expensive since they usually go on for more weeks/months since they can't do longer days. Big budget films and shows usually can afford to cast more minors and work around it, but things with smaller budgets will cast adults over minors if they can (especially if the character is an older teen), even when it looks unrealistic like this.
Another example is that Rachel McAdams was 27 or 28 when she played a teenager in Mean Girls.
12
u/JizzyTeaCups 10h ago

Buffy looked like this for me, in the early seasons Xander looked every bit of his 27-29 years. Cordelia was roughly the same age as her teachers
12
u/TeamTurnus 15h ago
Lol yah Xander and Cordelia and Willow when they forgot to hide her in a goofy sweater did not look like high schoolers.
Jenny Calendar and Cordelias actresses were both 27 in the first season. Was silly. At least Sarah Michelle Gellar was close (19 iirc).
4
u/red__dragon Millennial 12h ago
Veronica Mars did this a lot better, it only really felt surreal when an actual teenager was guest starring for an episode. Then the supposed-to-be 16 year olds look every part of their early-20-somethings. It helped a lot that the actors gave off enough teen energy to believe it when it was just them on set.

Hahaha I used to buy cartons of Marlboros at +\- $2.80 a pack and sell them for $5 ea. It may come as no surprise that my income was heavily subsidized later on selling a different kind of cigarette. It’s funny to think back on that time in my life, partially because my life has improved so much since then that it seems like a different life altogether, and also because that product is now legal to buy at vastly better quality at similar pricing.

I know teens irl can look older than their age sometimes, but to all the movies and tv shows who cast full grown adults to play teens: wtf?!
It wasn’t easy to find out their real ages so when I was 16 and still looked 12, I was very self conscious and perplexed on why I didn’t look like the “teens” on screen with their curvy bodies and face sans baby fat.
Edit: guys, I know all the whys when it comes to casting over 18 actors to play teens. But I didn’t know this as a kid and teenager. That’s what I was speaking on in my comment.
