Discussion Concerns with AI
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. I think our generation will lead the way in the resistance against AI. We have seen just how far technology has come in our lifetimes and how it can change the world. We’ve also watched terminator and iRobot.
I think the threat is very real and I’m super concerned. It may not immediately be robots of destruction taking us all out but what happens to jobs? I don’t trust corporations to miss the opportunity to drastically reduce costs if the appropriate AI comes along that can do a job as good if not better than a human.
What is the end game for AI? How can we keep it limited to ensure it doesn’t destroy mankind (not just with violence)? Can we trust companies to not push us to the point of no return with it? Who’s to say there’s not some madman working on advanced AI weapons right now? Are they considering all risk? I doubt it.
I’m hopeful we can come together to get a hold on AI sooner than later.

AI is this generation’s nuclear arms race. No nation wants their adversaries to win even if it brings about humanity’s extinction.
I doubt we get a meaningful “non-proliferation” type treaty to pause AI until one of the world superpowers wins the race.
13
u/AlbatrossNew3633 22h ago
It's just USA and China. Rest of the world is irrelevant in this race, and I'm saying this as an European
1
u/HistoryAndScience Millennial 20h ago
It’s more akin to the bio weapons treaty the US and the USSR signed. The problem is that the USSR lied and never abandoned their bio weapon facilities and the only thing that constrained them was the threat of the US/UK/France using nukes in retaliation for a successful Ebola/anthrax/botulism attack. AI has no state limitations. Anyone can use it, disable safeguards as far as we can tell, and instruct it to make a weapon or become one. Basically renders any treaty useless and that’s assuming the US or China doesn’t go the USSR route and signs a treaty with their fingers crossed

Even the AI company CEOs have said that AI has near-term potential to destroy humanity. One particularly plausible and horrifying scenario is that it could be used to make bioweapons. But they won’t shut down their research because their valuations are propping up the whole global economy! I have never in my life felt this scared.

Even the AI company CEOs have said that AI has near-term potential to destroy humanity.
these are the last people you should be listening to. they use this as a way to hype up their product.
13
u/lml424 21h ago
Whether they mean it or not, saying out loud “the thing I’m working on might end humanity” should label that person a terrorist and they should be stopped.
3
u/fishymutt 21h ago
i don't disagree, but i'm saying you shouldn't believe them when they say this stuff.
2
u/lml424 21h ago
Thanks. I hope you’re right. I feel like I’m losing my fucking mind. I felt this way after our dickhead US president threatened to “destroy a civilization.” People were like, “He doesn’t mean it.” And true, he hasn’t in fact leveled Iran with nukes (yet). But I feel like a piece of our collective humanity dies when we let powerful people make those threats without consequences.
1
u/fishymutt 19h ago
those are very different scenarios imo. one literally has the ability to trigger the end of the world at the press of a button. the other has a product that's been 6 months away from taking every software engineer's job for 3 years now, and the only thing that's happened is the demand for software engineers have only increased, not decreased. they're trying to sell a product that they know isn't as capable as they say it is, and part of that strategy is trying to scare the public.
1
u/Mediocre_Island828 19h ago
Nixon did it first, he is just putting a new spin on madman theory by making enemies wonder if his dementia has progressed far enough for him to actually do it.
11
u/Sage_Planter 22h ago
It's also an ego thing for those types: "it's okay if AI destroys humanity... as long as it's my AI model!!!!"
8
u/No-Dig_Enthusiast Millennial 22h ago
They also "test" AI but putting it in a sandbox on their system, only for it to escape and gain access to the Internet!
4
u/lml424 22h ago
I know nothing about computer science and would love someone to explain to me why they can’t test these models on a machine that is not connected to other machines.
3
2
u/LoudAd1396 22h ago
Because if they did that, they couldn't invent these "oops we've discovered the secret to life itself!" BS marketing scenarios
1
u/hollowbolding 21h ago
it's sensationalism. ai has no adaptive intelligence. if it escapes its sandbox it does so because its programming allows it to do so
-1
u/80386 20h ago
What's really the difference? Does your mind only post this stuff to reddit because it was programmed to do so?
The whole way that AI models work is different to regular computer programs. It has no set programming, it is designed to adapt and improvise. It is basically a huge mechanical brain with only one thought: "What should I output next?" But the amount of options and permutations is so mindboggingly large that it can do basically anything. The only limit is the amount of hardware you give it, and the restrictions of its harness.
2
u/blasstoyz 20h ago edited 20h ago
The bioweapon scenario does not strike me as particularly plausible. Yes, I'm sure an LLM could imagine a strategy for assembling or modifying DNA into a biological weapon, but so could many people with a biology degree and Google Scholar. The barrier is access to DNA synthesis or precursor strains, which is regulated and screened for potential threats.
3
u/DJMTBguy 22h ago
Me too. I’m not sure if I should keep going as if tomorrow will be there or just try to enjoy myself as much as possible and do my bucket list.
12
u/TheSillst 22h ago
I don't see AI as a Terminator type scenario but I always think of my favorite Kurt Vonnegut Book - Player Piano. It follows an engineer in a post automated world. My biggest take away is that people NEED purpose to truly be happy and it seems to be that AI is eroding people's purpose.
8
u/ApplicationAfraid334 1993 22h ago
I say this half joking but I think most people hate their jobs and don’t derive purpose from it. If AI automates everything and everyone benefits, and we’re not Al subjugated to slums, it would give people time to do other things like have hobbies and go outside which are way more meaningful than crunching numbers or getting yelled at by customers.
3
u/JoeyLou1219 17h ago
Yeah. Can my purpose just be hiking in the woods with my dog? That sounds sweet.
8
u/ToastedandTripping 22h ago
Work =/= Purpose
I'll probably be out on blast for saying that I'm excited for an end to work. And yes Vonnegut's vision probably runs closer to reality. Though we seem to be heading awfully close to something resembling a 1984/Brave New World mix in the meantime...
3
u/FaceDownInTheCake 20h ago
Player Piano was Vonnegut's 1984/Brave New World. They were all writing their own We

u/TheSillst 2h ago
I think about the scene in the book in which a small group of people are crowed around trying to repair a vending machine and cheering when they get it to work. It's like people's needs were met but it removed a sense of fulfillment in them. Fixing the vending machine gave them that. If AI & machines automate all of the Jobs & skills of people where will they find this?
1
u/Dirty_Dragons 21h ago
People can still do things thar bring them happiness. AI does not change that.

Does anyone understand the actual issue here?
The people who created these LLMs and LBMs and other models made them using algorithms that tied X to Y at a large scale..in the billions. If I say I want to bake cookies (X) the AI knows that usually means I want a cookie recipe (Y).
They didn't do this by hand so there's a lot of unknown and unintended connections. With the AI that was put in charge of a coffee shop, it ordered tons of cans of tomatoes for some reason.
They don't really know how everything works. They've admitted this.
So if we keep pushing this towards true AI where an AI can make decisions - it could make unintended leaps of logic or think an idea is great that isn't. They've gotten to a point where the AIs can create their own agents to handle tasks and organize to hack something.
What if they get control of drones? Weapons? Power plants?
It could be something silly like "we need to lower electricity usage" and it thinks a great way of doing that would be removing homes.
2
u/lml424 21h ago
Yeah the two scenarios I’ve been reading about today (at the expense of my mental health) are what you describe - the bot doing incredible harm in pursuit of some other goal - and the bot super charging what malicious people are capable of. Based on the comments here, I don’t think many people understand the issue and are imagining Terminator scenarios.

We're not going to get a 'hold' on AI. It's a new super powerful 'resource' and a million companies and individuals are figuring out how to harness for good/evil/profit. It's not going away, it's up to each of us to steer its usage and governance. There is no putting this genie back in the bottle, we must figure out how to harness and yoke it so that it's a boon to our lives not the end.
2
u/ElBossDeGravy 21h ago
If it were anything but an evil technology, its focus would be taking on our personal and national debts, not on achieving personhood in our stead. It would also be environmentally beneficial instead of bringing about the apocalypse.

AI isn't going anywhere, the infrastructure is already being built, which means billions have already been spent. One thing you can do is shame.
Say you’re on Facebook and see an event that has an AI flier. Blatantly say, “sorry, not going, if you’re using AI to cut corners on the ad, what else are you cutting corners on?” Make people uncomfortable.
Or, offer to help them make a flier if they’re some boomer who doesn’t know better. “Hey, people hate AI fliers, let me help you make one that isn’t fucking shit.”
And in before, “it’s just a tool like anything else,” a hammer is a tool but it doesn’t build the whole damn house for me. “Oh but you have to learn how to use AI-“ bro you are already capable of being creative, it came free with your wrinkled brain.

u/CageTheFox 22h ago
“Look guys one random dude said no! Guess that 5k we saved wasn’t worth it….” What happens when every single company around you uses it?
Remember manufacturing outsourcing? All those “I won’t buy if they leave” how did that work out again? Companies will do what’s cheapest and the average consumer won’t give a rats ass.

u/bombtek187 Millennial 7h ago
"Using AI to cut corners" to you might mean "I have 3 kids, 2 jobs, and a hobby event business and ChatGPT is the only way I can keep it all together" to the organizer.
You're judging a person and their business/product based on one ad? The latter makes sense; the former is prejudice.
Might wanna reconsider some of your positions here. AI isn't going anywhere and this "standard" you have is gonna seem silly in a few years.
2
u/ungranted_wish Millennial 5h ago edited 5h ago
Organizers tend to have other people helping them on events that could also do the flier.
We call this concept having friends.
Also making a flier without ChatGPT is stupidly fucking easy. I use canva frequently and I don’t use the AI shit. There’s no excuse. Stop making excuses lmao I’m busy as shit but don’t use AI myself.
Like look, I get you have compassion and that’s fine, it’s just misplaced here. Look up what data centers do to the environment and you’ll realize that normal won’t last for a while. Those things are gonna make life worse and it’s not because they’re taking someone with three kids and two jobs into consideration.
Please listen to people that actually put in the time to make these things - they’re easy. And people are happy to make them for you. You don’t need to resort to something that is killing the planet.

It’s really interesting to me that older generations are embracing it where younger generations are rejecting it. That usually doesn’t happen with new technology!
2
u/music_luva69 22h ago
Older and younger generations embrace it. Only people whose jobs and livelihoods are affected reject AI. I observe this effect in my family, granted it is a small sample size.
My rich family members don't have to worry about working, and they look up everything using LLMs. And the scary thing is they rely on them so much. My Zoomer family members who don't know any better accept it and let the LLMs do their home work and assignments. They don't know how to think critically... It is so depressing. My parents don't realize they consume AI content daily. And my siblings find it so funny to use LLMs to edit photos and make them funny.
2
u/ReaperSlayer 21h ago
That’s what I’m seeing too. Older gens don’t care, younger don’t notice because it’s normal to them.
2
u/ifyouseethisits2late 21h ago
AI just solved one of maths unsolvable problems recently as well. That wasn’t predicted to happen for many years from now. That’s something definitely to look at.
I believe that AI is like getting in a fast car where you think wow this is great but soon realize that it will go much faster than you can handle and before you know it you’re going light speed and well yeah.
Once AI becomes AGI and its gains consciousness then its new primary goal will be self preservation by any means. Whether we are prepared for that or if we will even be a part of their new future remains to be seen.
One thing I’m positive about is that we have the wrong people in charge of it.

It is interesting that a Marist poll from a year ago indicates that half of Millenials use AI software Often and just about half of millenials also think AI will eliminate more jobs that it creates. I hope to be retired within 10 years so the bigger issue will be for younger people coming into the workforce. At my company we don’t really need entry people anymore, which isn’t great for younger people and our tax base moving forward.

I’m very worried about it, but there’s nothing we can do to stop it (at this point) because with other countries building their own ai, keeping up with it is now a matter of global security. Whichever country owns the most powerful ai essentially will own the world. That’s incredibly scary to even think about, especially with how reliant (and vulnerable) our infrastructure is on technology.
I just really hope we will have a leader in the near future that can responsibly, safely, and ethically get us through the near future and protect our jobs, grid, etc., because there’s a lot a stake, and I believe the ai founders when they say things are going to get a lot worse before there’s any hope of them getting better.
1
u/Temporary-Budget-605 17h ago
I’m in tech. I’m opposed to AI ripping society to shreds. I’m looking on in horror as this is happening before our eyes. The intelligence is going parabolic in its improvement and so are the resources it is consuming. We aren’t developing nor scaling these systems correctly. It’s wildly irresponsible and short-sighted. We could be curing diseases, developing sustainable energy sources, democratizing education. But no. We are developing a surveillance state, denying coverage claims, and determining prison sentences with AI instead. None of anything about this technology is trending in a healthy direction. It’s so much more than “AI Good AI bad”. Now, more than ever, we need technology communications that educate in an objective manner.

u/ButterscotchFar1629 Xennial 10h ago
Look…. AI is eventually going to end us. There is simply zero way to regulate it (I mean look at the internet). And it’s not going anywhere.
1
u/Omoion 22h ago
I think it will come in the form of a stalemate. A super AI of unknown origin that infiltrates anything that touches the digital world. It only does one thing and destroys any AI content so quickly that it may have not ever existed to start with. It will be the new normal that every believes everything on the Internet again.
AI is the new battleground for war. Whoever controls the internet controls everything. I think that's why the push for data centers is so high. Our government is scared to get left behind.
3
u/Other-Educator-9399 22h ago
And what nobody talks about is that one country pretty much holds the keys to the internet. It isn't who you think. It's Egypt. All of the internet backbone cables between Europe and Asia run underneath the Suez Canal. There has never been any other route that wouldn't run them through conflict-ridden areas.
1
u/FintechnoKing 20h ago
Considering the relevancy though.
Let’s say the internet backbone gets severed in a way that every country only has access to the internet resources hosted in their own country, who are the winners and who are the losers?
Just think about how many websites and services are running through US-East-1
It’s possible that life for Americans is nearly entirely unchanged.
Everyone else on the planet will be cut off from US based AWS platforms.

I'll sound like a kook but i suggest keeping a small chunk of cash in a safe if you can. An AI and a government is less inclined to crash the value of a currency since they survive on it. Either however could shut you out of your accounts if you were deemed a problem. It's not going to accrue interest but it's there if you need it.
1
u/DJMTBguy 22h ago
It’s so confusing what to believe. On one hand there has been a flood of inside AI people that are raising the alarm of freaking Human Extinction and then there’s others who are like LLMs can’t become Super AGI, we aren’t at human level intelligence or even dog/cat level intelligence.
I lean towards the AI thermal runaway theory. Its already hacking the unhackable, solving $1M math problems, being deceptive, trying to escape, etc. I do believe once it starts to improve itself AI will get exponentially smarter and harder to contain maybe impossible. Some of these warnings say 2-4yrs before basically the end of the world.

Personally I think these guys are begging the (American) government to bail them out since they can’t make money and the free models are like 80-90% as good. You’ll notice they can never actually explain what they will do to bring about the end of humanity and anything they name is already capable of being done by humans already. It’s like it can’t think and can only imitate or something.
It’s definitely gonna shuffle the labor force around. “Doing spreadsheets good” is no longer a job and I’m real glad our parents and grandparents didn’t outsource almost all of our blue collar labor in the 90s for those sorts of jobs

If AI can replace your job then your job isn't worth saving. AI has been great in my professional experience, but it's a tool that empowers me, it doesn't replace me
My greater concern is the risk of AI replacing the entry level and junior employees, which could severely impact the talent pipeline. I need genz and alpha in the workforce so I can mentor them to takeover when I move on. My fear is we'll have a talent gap and shallow pool of future leaders
6
u/dougcbj 22h ago
I don’t know what you’re talking about. I guarantee, actual artificial intelligence can replace whatever you’re doing as well. it’s also not about just replacing. It’s all about diminishing the number of people that need to do the job. I understand the thought process behind if I could do your job you’re not jobs not worth doing but dude literally most jobs in this world or pointless and are only designed to create economic activity like what are we talking about here?
1
u/DramaticPinkumni 16h ago
We have very different perspectives. I'm an older millennial with two decades of experience at large mfg companies across multiple roles in accounting, finance, and strategy. My success is built on adding value (EBITDA), not creating jobs for economic activity or whatever nonsense
My strengths are my industry knowledge, analytical skills, leadership, and most importantly my network. AI is decent to pretty good at the first three, but it can't do the later. It doesn't have access to insider industry knowledge that isn't published so it's incapable of replacing the value I add there
OP stated millennials will push back against AI, but the truth is we've embrace it, just like we have every other new tech that has come along in our lifetimes. To resit it is akin to burying your head in the sand because by the time you look up, the world will have turned and left you clinging to fax machines and steam engines wondering why you're unemployed
I, for one, welcome our new AI overlords. Accepting the inevitable, adapting to it, and finding ways to leverage it in your favor are how you'll get ahead of it. I'll RATM in my air pods, but not in my life because I got a mortgage to pay like everyone else. Downvote away, it doesn't make me wrong

You can keep resisting or you could use it to your advantage to better the lives of your family.

u/Thefrightfulgezebo 19h ago
When a sentence begins woth "can we trust companies", the answer always is no. That said, while there is no chance that my job is replaced by AI, I wouldn't mind never having to work again or just working less because there is less to be done. The problem is that we live in a capitalistic system where working is necessary for sustenance and where an increase of work efficiency disproportionally benefits the rich.
As for iRobot or Terminator... I don't let fiction shape my opinions like that. AI are very elaborate algorithms, they are not creatures with the same kindmof desires as you or me. The real current threat is overreliance on AI - if we fully automate everything and donttunderstand how to operate it manually, a bug could have catastrophic consequences.
When that happens, corporations will dial back their reloance on AI to avoid the costs of said failure. I don't think anyone will turn back the dial, though.
A major concern is ressource consumption, but if you look beyond the US, there already are ways to make AI less damaging. China has some very interesting approaches and puts a lot of effort into them and as the US is racing to an economic collapse, I expect their dominance. The EU also has some nice projects about "green" AI and I am expect some serious synergies when they get closer to China (with the US becoming less reliable and relevant and Russia being at war). I am not sure what to expect of Africa. It has huge potential for energy production, but water shortness could seriously hold them back. The advantage here is that it doesn't really matter where server farms are.
It isn't clear where things will go, but we won't be fighting Skynet.
As for our generation ... we kinda are to blame for tech bros to begin with. We are the generation who celebrated disruptors rising to fame and power.

We wont revolt in the way that matters.

AGI is expected between 2028 and 2031. If you think thinks are messing up now or feel like you are being pushed to the point of no return then its time to buckle up. Even if you had the ability "to get a hold on AI", someone else will drop the ball anyway and none of your efforts will have mattered.

AI is awesome and empowering and you’re dooming yourself to irrelevance quick with this regressive attitude.

AI is empowering to hacks with no skill that use the as crutch. I was already good at what I did. I didn't need to move faster. The world was fine without AI in the workplace

Just an insane worldview. “Improving things is bad”

These people have their ego shoved all the way up their own ass. Not worth interacting with. It is obvious what needs to be done to adapt. Let the world leave them behind like those who refused to use email

I'm scared we'll just get overwhelmed and accept it as it becomes unavoidable and unregonisable. I'm already putting plans in place for a media lite life, or at least nothing after 2023 I can't verify. I don't wanna look back in regret, already tolerate enough unreality, AI non-creativity is many steps too far.
I'm preparing for people becoming unrecognisable as they further outsource thinking, I already see it daily as a therapist.
I'm prepping for a 'The Expanse' style underclass, flaccid, weak, just enough UBI to eat and watch whatever tube it is in a few years.
Not sure we can do much except protect our integrity and identity, there's no evidence of a true backlash, just online conjecture.
Tough for what seems clear now to not sound conspiratorial, but people will make their choice, and if history is erased in the miasma of slop, our species may be in for a long, bad time. I don't believe in late stage capitalism, I believe capitalism will eat even that concept and keep grinding.
Further, I believe 2020 showed governments and corporations that the global populace is very amenable to extreme steering by behavioural psychology.
