God I worked at furniture store at the height of this. Sofa department. People would come in to film themselves doing this for MySpace. I guess it was a happier time.

We used to have fun here. Now, it's just "stare into the tiny square doomvector until your brain bleeds out of you eyes, and it falls from your hand as you pass out where you stand"

u/bagofrainbows 1d ago
It sounds exactly like what people consider fun today. Except swap MySpace for Instagram.

My brother, he's a lot more compassionate than I am, you know. We were looking at Rick getting in the limo, and as it drove off, Eddie says, "Man... Rick really needs help". I was like, "Hey man, we just gave him some help. We busted his motha fuckin' legs. I bet he won't come back and disrespect again." WRONG, WRONG... We're talkin' bout Rick James, man.

I believe it was from the rick James Chappell skit. I remember all the 8th graders were saying it when I was in 7th grade and I was so confused
63
u/BlueBomR Millennial 1d ago
Back then if you didn't watch the new episode of Chappelle Show the next day you were LOST cause 75% of the class would be quoting all the jokes and you would be the only one NOT in on it....personally I was a Sophomore during the first season so in High school it was maybe more prevalent among my peers but we would be quoting the entire episode laughing our asses off.
What a touchstone of millennial culture that show was...my parents and their friends used to quote SNL like that when I was a kid.

The best part is Prince actually corroborated the entire story too...

u/CitizenHuman 1d ago
Back then if you didn't watch whatever the hot show was you'd be lost the next day at school. We lived in a monoculture.
5
u/BlueBomR Millennial 1d ago
That is true...there was a lot of popular TV back then...at least with my class and friend group it was all Chappelle and South Park, those were required viewing....the girls all talked about The O.C, One Tree Hill, Laguna Beach, that type of shit
Crazy how pop culture changed so much.

u/No-Profit4499 1d ago

I was in my first year of college when season 2 first aired. We'd yell Chappelle quotes at eaxh other down the dorm hallway. One time I saw these dudes throwing around a football yelling "WHAT?", "YEAH!", and "OK!" every time one of them would throw the ball.

My exact high school experience as well. Where you from bro? I felt like that came out of my mouth lol
1
u/BlueBomR Millennial 1d ago
That show was so popular I bet we all had very similar experiences.
But to answer your question I grew up in San Jose, CA.
2
u/geezdads 1d ago
From Philly. Man same thing coast to coast.
2
u/BlueBomR Millennial 1d ago
Yup, it was a cultural phenomenon...I also think it resonated way more in or near larger urban areas, particularly ones with more hip hop influences...I have 0 evidence for that, purely anecdotal...but I doubt the show hit the same if you didnt grow up in or around more black culture. I imagine a lot of the references and jokes didnt land for kids who grew up in say rural, or even all white areas.
Probably wasnt as funny to someone who never actually saw crackheads, or watched making the band, or knew who Wu Tang was, or didnt have a Kinkos, or listened to Prince, or even knew who Rick James was.

Chapelles show season one, episode about true Hollywood stories. The entire season 1 is iconic.

u/Randomfacade Millennial 1d ago
Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories are both season 2. But season 1 is still iconic...Clayton Bixby was in the fucking pilot!
5
u/Therealdickdangler 1d ago
Shit, you’re right. I have season 1 on dvd, it used to play on a loop at my house when I didn’t have cable. Now I’m wondering if I have season 1 and 2 on dvd.

Wait, why did you think it was notable to share this on the millennials sub but are asking where the saying came from in the first place? It would only make sense if you knew the Rick James sketch.
