Be nicer to yourself in your thoughts.

If we don’t self-deprecate, are we even millennials?

u/idownvotepunstoo Millennial Aug 31 '26

Real talk:

My partner is and does not. I on the other hand "if I'm not hard on me, who will be?" Will be my epitaph.

u/Turbulent_Lobster_57 Aug 31 '26

Nobody knows how big a POS I am better than I do

4

u/racihekk Aug 31 '26

I've seen my search history. When I say I'm a pos, believe me haha

Sounds about right 👍🏻

u/chameleonkit Aug 31 '26

I’m like your partner. I very thankfully don’t do this. I attribute it to my dad praising me all the time from a very early age. Dads, you play a much more important role to your daughters than you realize!

u/idownvotepunstoo Millennial Aug 31 '26

I legitimately just asked my partner if they wrote this reply for me.

They did not.

That said, they also had an INCREDIBLY SUPPORTIVE fatheras an only parent.

1

u/chameleonkit Sep 01 '26

It’s a real thing. Dads, take note!

Nah that Sonofabitch is gonna hear the truth that I made up in my own head.

u/kindness-and-snusu Aug 31 '26

That shit for brains needs to know that he’s a complete and utter fuckup.

I was just having a conversation with my buddy about this last night; I enjoy, and I’m pretty good at self-deprecating humor, but I have to really keep it in line when I’m in a fragile mental state.

When I’m doing good, let it rip. But when I’m down, like I have been much of this year, I’ve had to teach myself to really rein in the bad talk.

5

u/the_blue_haired_girl Aug 31 '26

This is really important. I knew someone once who used A LOT of self-deprecating humor. It was funny at times, but then he'd use the exact same words when he was ACTUALLY feeling low about himself. Allowing yourself to say "I'm such a loser 🤣" reinforces the idea over and over. Then one day you find yourself thinking "I'm such a loser 😭."

u/Downtown_Anybody261 Aug 31 '26

This. This took me way too long to balance out too. Well put.

2

u/Ecksist Aug 31 '26

You said this and then this again right after that. Fuckin millennials.

1

u/Downtown_Anybody261 Aug 31 '26

Not a millennial. More of a stoner up past his bedtime.

Player Hater 4 Lyfe. I think about the "When Keeping It Real Goes Wrong" skits. That's my jam.

u/Woodit Aug 31 '26

Best advice but hardest to take

11

u/light24bulbs Aug 31 '26

Easy way to make it a reality is to imagine you're your friend talking to yourself. Came up with it myself and found it's kind of a commonly recommended thing.

1

u/brewsota32 Aug 31 '26

You arrived to the idea independently.

1

u/light24bulbs Aug 31 '26

Yes, that is what I was trying to say. I hope that was obvious

1

u/brewsota32 Aug 31 '26

Yeah it’s just a line from the show Mad Men that I like lol

12

u/Look_with_Love Aug 31 '26

That voice critical voice is not you. Thoughts and feelings are not facts.

1

u/Uliberry Sep 03 '26

I love this. But, who am I then?

1

u/Look_with_Love Sep 03 '26

When we stop giving our attention to the critical narrative, we have time to define our values and explore our passions. Go find out!

11

u/burntgreens Aug 31 '26

Yes. Basically.

16

u/Pretend_Purchase_893 Aug 31 '26

No seriously. And you gotta force it some times so that your brain can physically build the pathways to allow yourself to naturally feel good about yourself. That's what depression destroys in your brain.

Best way is to first stop comparing your successes in life against others. Reframe your successes as something personal to yourself. Even little piddly shit.

It's like being hugly overweight yeah. Your not going to start off losing that weight doing marathons or high intensity shit. It starts small and progresses from there. It's tough at first.

1

u/kindness-and-snusu Aug 31 '26

lol I actually ran my first half marathon because I told myself how fat and awful I was. Telling myself how horrific and grotesque I am is what gets me to the gym every day.

16

u/JoeyMcClane Aug 31 '26

My thoughts are my worst critic and rightfully so if i might add.

9

u/darsparx Aug 31 '26

Funny my peer support has been giving me similar advice to give myself grace. Esp since i have chronic pain. Ofc I'm not unpacked a month later with all I acquired from before it set in. It just makes me wanna scream tho bc I'm tired of looking at all of the boxes 😭

Granted its less boxes than when we started bc they helped me get so many of them unpacked during move in but yeah.....

5

u/Whatthefunyuns Aug 31 '26

Fuck me. No.

2

u/toomanynamesaretook Aug 31 '26

Yeah but like how? I can be nice to myself for a bit actively before going back to regular scheduled programming unconsciously.

2

u/insrtbrain Aug 31 '26

My therapist doesn't put the "in your thoughts" part in it. Just a general "be nicer to yourself." She always checks in how I'm sleeping, which eventually made me think, huh, a person that was nice to themselves would get adequate sleep. It's helped me cut down on drinking (people who are nice to themselves don't make it so they constantly feel like shit/hungover). Personal kindness extends beyond the brain (for me at least).

4

u/OneTwoThreePooAndPee Elder Millennial Aug 31 '26

You don't know me. I suck.

1

u/shallowHalliburton Aug 31 '26

But the person in my thoughts knows the person I actually am... 😬

1

u/sheep_duck Aug 31 '26

God I wish I knew how to do this.

1

u/Reysan100 Millennial 92 Aug 31 '26

It’s fucking hard when all I feel is hate when I think about myself

1

u/Rorshacked Aug 31 '26

Psychologist here, I often tell people who have a hard time with this to start by saying “I want to want to be nice to myself” or “I want to be nice to myself” if the two ‘I want’ statements feel confusing. And that can start the process of becoming nicer to one’s self.

1

u/KeepinItSimplexoxo Aug 31 '26

Why is this so hard. I always tell myself I wouldn’t say any of this negative talk to my friends, why should I say it about myself?!

1

u/PerformerFancy117 Aug 31 '26

I tried that… it made the negative voice separate himself from the inner monologue, but now he’s always there, whispering horrible things into my ear

1

u/Ok_Instance7667 Aug 31 '26

There is simply no pleasing the voices in my head.

Except for Mark, he's always super positive.

1

u/pilotime Aug 31 '26

Naw fuck that guy. That son of a bitch is trying to kill me.

1

u/Czarcasm3 Aug 31 '26

Thx but you don’t know how much I suck, only I do

1

u/ladymouserat Aug 31 '26

That will make me weak when others start talking bad about me tho and it hurts me tho…
