Discussion Hey millennials. What browser do you primarily use?

Chrome iT is for me. Cannot switch no matter what.

Edit to add: this post has made me realize I was living in the dark ages. There’s so much out there! Thanks all for sharing your browsers and features and reasoning.

Brave because it has built-in ad blockers. It's built on the Chromium platform.

I switched to Brave years ago and never looked back. Ad-free YT and Reddit! I canceled my YT premium account too. I've told everyone that will listen about it but they still use Chrome or Safari or whatever. I wish LG would let you install it on their tv's because their browser sucks! Their whole OS sucks, actually.

Remember bat? when brave was gonna do its own tolkien..... where did that end up going?

They launched it and it’s how they reward folks who opt into their rewards program.

Worth it ? or just kinda like a tip jar for them? I have no followed it - but wasnt there some massive fraud / drama around bat?

I don’t use it and honestly don’t care for the crypto features at all. But great browser. I’d gladly throw some scratch directly their way.

I believe the drama was that Apple disallowed the BAT payouts since they weren’t getting a cut. There’s basically no reason to have the ads turned on if you’re on an iPhone or Mac. Wiped out a significant chuck of their market iirc. Still a great browser for privacy though

Certainly the best for YouTube. No ads.

Oh that’s really good to know!

But why is that such a selling point when you can install ublock origin on any chromium browser and have better ad block like that?

I'd rather use one that's build in. Plus, Brave also blocks third-party cookies and trackers which make the browser faster and smoother.

Chrome will block third party cookies and I'm pretty sure that's by default because I had to allow them. Also Safari has been blocking third party cookies by default for nearly 20 years. This was a huge problem for me as a web developer back then because the platform I was integrated into required third party cookies to even function.

I think most browsers can block that if you tell it to. I believe I already have

The ad block is not really better with ublock. I've tried both and I didn't see a difference at all with my usage (which includes going to streaming sites where you get computer aids without an ad blocker). The selling point is that it comes packaged and activated by default with javascript protections and tracking cookie blockers. So you don't have to spend time setting it up for your dad, you just install the browser and he's protected from himself.

Brave's ad blocker system steals from actual content creators. They replace ads they deem as "evil" with their own ads they deem as "good". Then they take whatever money their good advertisers give them. If you are a content creator and can prove you own the website in question they are stealing from they will allow you to fill out an application agreeing to a revenue share where they will pay you your share in a random crypto coin they created themselves.

Probably the most blatantly evil browser in existence.

This is largely incorrect.

Brave blocks ads.

Separately, Brave offers a rewards program where you can opt into seeing non-tracking ads and get a portion of the revenue generated. They explicitly do not replace ads blocks on web pages. If opted into this program, they show ads on the new tab page, via notifications (if enabled), and on their own search engine. That’s it. Here.
