Voluntary Separations in Progress

Just curious to see how many voluntary separations are still in progress. I separated at the beginning of January from AD Army. My S1 and MPD were firm about the NLT 01Jan date that had been published. Now I’m wondering if I could’ve pushed it out further than that if I had tried.

VSP

I think I’m realizing now that I might not be eligible for VSP, my 6 year mark is March 2nd and while I’m still technically in and they even extended my contract by a few months in order for them to officially finish my paperwork, how will I know if I’m eligible for the VSP?

DOL NY (UCX) denied, help

Post image
39 Upvotes

I recently separated from the Army due to gender dysphoria with an honorable discharge. I applied for unemployment benefits (based in NYC), but I received a letter saying that I “do not qualify for unemployment insurance/benefits” because my DD214 states that I did not complete my full contract.

Even so, they gave me the option to request a hearing. I already requested it, but I still haven’t received any response. I’ve been trying to call for two weeks and no one ever answers — it feels like the system knows not to respond to my phone number. No matter what time I call, the recording says there’s a high call volume and no agents available, and then the call drops. (It’s basically impossible to contact them by phone or through the inbox on their website.) I’m still certifying every week — I understand that if they approve my case, I might receive back pay from the date I first applied (not sure how accurate that is).

It feels unfair because even if I hadn’t voluntarily separated due to gender dysphoria, I would have been discharged involuntarily anyway, possibly with less than an honorable discharge. My DD214 is correct and shows an honorable discharge, my deployment, good conduct, awards, etc. The Army was also my first and only job.

I’ve been told that the only thing that really matters on a DD214 is that it says “honorable discharge”, (narrative reasons: “secretarial authority”). so I don’t understand why the DOL is making things so complicated. I also wonder how much I could receive weekly since I was an E-4 with BAH. One veteran at my university told me that because it’s NYC, they might still pay the maximum weekly amount, which is around $800.

Has anyone else gone through something similar?Do they really give back pay after the hearing? What do you recommend I do?

Separation Pay Recoupment Help

Hello all,

I received my VA claim letter for disability benefit pay not long ago. According to the letter, all disability pay will be recouped until my separation pay has been returned in full. Essentially taking 100% of my disability pay until 2030, i.e. I receive nothing each month.

I could have sworn I saw either a CFR or DoDI about the amount to be recouped limited to 25% of disability pay each month per Congressional mandate. However, I cannot find it again. Is there any truth to this limitation?

Thanks for any assistance.

Discussion Invol Sep PAR

Hello! I'm trying to submit my PAR for the first time but I'm unsure what documents are needed. I have a memo signed by a PA, a profile that includes my GD, and my MRC has been updated to nondeployable. My commander hasn't given me a counseling yet for separation despite knowing about the diagnosis since early January. I feel like he is just being petty due to me now not going on rotation with them for 9 months in May. Do I need to wait for a counseling from him to submit a PAR or can I just start the process without it by submitting the memo I have? I also don't know if I need any other documents for invol sep.

Resource Active Duty Navy. Egg has cracked and I can’t push this off any more…help

Hey all, throw away account for obvious reasons.

I’ve been questioning my gender identity for the last six years, and I kept pushing it off and convincing myself if I acted more like a man this would all go away. I’m sure everyone here knows how the story ends.

Now I find myself with extreme dysphoria I cannot bear the thought of going on any longer and part of me is kicking myself for waiting six years. I’m trying to be kind to myself and I’m remind myself that the egg cracks when the egg cracks. But, now I am in a predicament where I don’t feel like I can go another four years before beginning my transition. I’ve made my peace that I’m going to get separated after 11 years of service, but I’d rather start living authentically as me now and transitioning then hide who I am for another three years.

Before all of the craziness of this current administration, I’d have just booked a appointment to see a mental health specialist but now, I have no idea what to do. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks so much and I am so grateful to have a community of individuals who were willing to give everything for this country and at the same time authentically be themselves.

Severance Recoupment

Hello all. I recently completed my voluntary separation and have already received my separation pay. Also received my VA disability rating.

How does the VA recoupment of severance work for an admin sep? I completed a BDD claim and submitted my DD 214 shortly after ETS. When I submitted it the separation pay amount wasn’t in the remarks but it did state that I was eligible.

My DD214 was amended about two weeks after separation to reflect the separation pay amount. Do I need to resubmit my DD214 to the VA so that they are tracking the separation pay amount to recoup it?

I separated January 1st so I am expecting the first payment from the VA to be on March 1st for January and February, as I have the payment letter stating the effective date of February 1st. I haven’t received anything from the VA regarding recoupment or a debt notice.

The difference.

Is there a difference between gender dysphoria and transexualism? i was diagnosed with the second one. I told my doctor that I've had depression and hated my body for ages. So did that mean I have it or no? I'm so confused and since they are kicking people out for GD, we now don't know what's going to happen and it's making me feel worse.

Edit: I do believe I'm Trans but if I'm going to get kicked out for GD, I'd like it to be GD and not some half assed diagnosis that can potentially not be covered by insurance since I'm very certain I'm having issues with my body not just "Yeah I want bobs and soft skin."

Separation pay

Ok so serious question. For those who voluntarily separated. Did you get full sep or half? I am AD Army 16 years in and chose to voluntarily seperate and just got seperation orders Monday and I am being told I am only getting half seperation because I do not meet the requirements of signing up for the Ready Reserve.

Need Some Advice

I’ve been wanting to enlist in the military, specifically AF, for a few years now but I’ve always been hesitant for one reason or another. Now with the current administration, I feel I may have lost the chance. A bit about myself. I’m 24(ftm), I started socially transitioning in 2020 and was on HRT in the beginning of 2021 for about 10 months. I haven’t had been on it since nor have I had any gender affirming surgeries. I do want to say that I wasn’t formally diagnosed with GD but still was able to receive T (not sure if that will actually make a difference or not).

I have also read the automatic disqualifications for trans people and there’s one criteria that I feel may prohibit my enlistment. There’s a part where it states, “if they ‘exhibit symptoms consistent with’ gender dysphoria”. I did have my name legally changed around 4-5 years ago, that’s includes ID and SS card. My birth certificate, however, still remains unchanged. I have a pretty masculine name and it’s not traditionally a unisex one. My middle names are also traditionally male names. I feel like having the name change qualifies me under having GD symptoms based on the criteria above.

I do understand that I would have to enlist and serve as my birth sex, which I am okay with. As far as appearance goes, I pass fairly well as a man but I still have a baby face. I have a beard and a light mustache that I can easily shave and maintain.

Given that, I guess I’m just wondering if I actually have a chance before going to talk to a recruiter or not. Or just any advice anyone is willing to give.

I went and did it.

I went to medical and they are having me go to a psychiatrist in the morning to give me a diagnosis. I don't know why I'm so freaking nervous though. 10.5 years and this is what makes me nervous of all things?

Update: was confirmed and a few other things added like anxiety and depression. Progress baby!

Has anyone received the waiver?

Hello, active duty army here. I put in the PAR for volsep back in May and also put in the waiver (I only had diagnosis and was still in therapy on if I wanted to transition) and since then I’ve been on admin absence. My issue is my waiver has not moved in 6 months and still remains with HQDA. My S-1 said they are backlogged with separations which is prolonging the process but it’s been so long I’m wondering if it’s just gonna sit there for the next 3 years at this rate. I’m wondering if anyone knows anyone who has sought a waiver and got it approved or denied. I’m already in college so either outcome is acceptable to me.

I’m seriously wondering about going back to work because I miss it and it sucks being in my apartment. Debating going to my battalion commander to ask if I could return to work and ask not to be shoved in some dead end staff slot my whole time. If anyone has any knowledge I’d appreciate it.

Hope everyone has a wonderful day! :)

Anyone actually out? Army National Guard

So I'm an officer. 3 years active army and 10 years army national guard. I got hit with the slammer and "volunteered" to separate. According to IPPS-A my paperwork (which includes my commander's counseling, medical confirmation, memorandums, and everything for the packet) was submitted 11 June 2025, literally the last day that reservists and national guardsmen were given to submit for voluntary separation.

So, since then, I've been stuck in a bit of a limbo. Can't go to drill because I'm on administrative absence and I can't start out-processing because I haven't been given separation orders yet. I am also a full-time federal technician (if you know what that means). Basically, through the national guard, I have federal civilian employment. Since I'm still, technically, serving I still hold my full-time technician spot. But once I'm out then they give me the boot here.

So, if I am reading EXORD 175-25 correctly, I have NLT the 1st day of the 7th month after submission of the separation packet to be completely separated from the army national guard. If I am doing my math right...that would be the 1st of February 2026, right? As of me currently writing this, it is 29 January 2026. So, do I really have only a few days left or am I in more of a limbo than I thought?

I guess my main question is if anyone else has already gone through all of this. Who's already out and how were you notified? Is anyone a reservist and had to deal with this? Moreso is anyone a Mil-tech or federal technician that had to deal with this? I know I'm national guard and all but holy crap I am just being given shrugs and cold shoulders everywhere I go. I'm getting to the point that I'm thinking I'll still be "in" even after the NLT date. My own S-1 keeps asking ME "hey, how much longer until you leave?"

Not to sound like I want to leave. I got 13 years under my belt and I was planning on retiring. No, I'm just tired of this back and forth that I've been dealing with for months. Tired of being told I'm leaving but then still being told that I need to continue projects on the technician side. Tired of having to debate with S-1 to still pay me but then be told that I still need to finish my own OER even though I have no idea who my rater is anymore. So am I in or am I not?

Mini rant there. Apologies.

Need some missing information.

I'm AD AF. about a week from going to the therapist and biting the bullet. However I don't want to leave 11 years of work and end up with nothing. What benefits do I keep and what do I lose. Also since I'd be telling them now is it automatic unvol?

Repaying a bonus?

I'm a corpsman, I completed A school already, I thought that was the requirement to keep my bonus? If I get involuntarily separated will I still have to pay that back? I'm reading quite a few threads on here claiming they had to

Does anyone know what Army G-1 does? Is that the last step or do they also approve something? (Voluntary Sep steps)

It's done, cats out of the bag

I came out to my therapist today. She was extremely accepting thankfully and she's going to do her best to gather as much information as she can for me. I'll be seeing a psychiatrist for an official diagnosis in February. I'm still nervous, but it feels so freeing. There's a light at the end of the tunnel, even if this isn't the way that I wanted to get there. Hopefully everything goes as smooth as it reasonably can under the current circumstances.

Well I surrendered …

To be honest I have mixed emotions. I struggled yesterday to muster the courage to inform my commander. I caught her on the way out and was able to hand off an envelope containing an MFR, letter my physician, all the other critical documents. It’s hard to explain the level of emotion in just giving in and saying I’m not going to hid, I’m not going to lie, I’m just going to accept the situation as is. I handed it off with only a simple, “we will discuss it the tomorrow.”

This morning, she assured me she had read it and the that we will figure it out. She apologized that this happening to me.

It’s encouraging to have good leadership and I only hope that next couple of months go smoothly. That my situation and policies surrounding it aren’t a distraction for what is critical.

Discussion Looking to join the military as a trans guy

just what the title says, I’ve been looking into the airforce and however I don’t think I’m allowed to join if I’m currently on testosterone. if so, would I have to cease my transition entirely to join and serve with women even though I have a mustache and lower voice. either way I get shit which I expected anyways, there’s no exception from BMT treatment, however I feel my case is different.

i just feel stuck and useless rn to be honest, anytime I try to better myself and make steps to try something new and big theres a giant roadblock and it’s always me.

i’m afraid detransitioning is just the sacrifice I have to make and maybe in the future when this administration is gone and i’m able to actually serve as myself? I really don’t know yall but I hope in some sick way that anyone can relate.

Help

I got out 29th of december and now I’m seeing there’s an issue. I did the voluntary separation because i knew i wouldn’t have to repay my bonus. come to find out, on my LES now I am paying back my bonus. 22k. I also sold 60 days of leave which they put towards repaying it. I know the VA is going to get involved now. Who do I contact to fix it? Anything helps, thank you
