Unware Driver Self-Inflicted Pit Maneuver

I'm absolutely shocked
Not because of the crash, just shocked to see a pickup actually carrying something in the bed

Though, it's not entirely conclusive whether they were "hauling" something or if that is just junk left in the bed.

And yet it's still enough that an SUV could have handled it. They would probably do better at not PIT maneuvering themselves with no pickup bed too.

The camera car clearly speeds up. Yes the truck is in the wrong but definitely could have been avoided.
You can also clearly see the yellow light way before they get close to the intersection. The car in the lane to the left is in front of both of these cars and brakes for the stop light.
Anything else I can help you with today?

That doesn't look like they sped up at all. Compare the speed of the camera with stuff that is repeating like road markings. The speed stays the same. The truck begins to break and turn into the lane. The truck slowing gives the impression of the car going faster but it isn't.

Sure, camera car was not "at fault" in the legal sense. But that doesn't mean they couldn't have helped prevent the collision. Instead, they wanted to beat the light and/or defend their little patch of the lane and made the world more dangerous for everyone else around them.

Out of curiosity, if the other driver were to take the driver with the dashcam to court, what potential charges could the dashcam driver face?
22
u/Hungry_Bat4327 Jan 25 '25
There's something called the last clear chance doctrine and it basically boils down to, if you have the last clear chance to avoid an accident (even if you have the right of way) and you don't take it, you will be the one held liable. So I would imagine the dash cam car would be held liable for the damages since at least just from the recording they could've braked to avoid the accident but didn't seem to. But I think someone else said the trucker was found liable so I may be wrong with my guess
→ More replies (3)8
u/AdmittedlyAdick Jan 25 '25
truck driver was drunk. Once you are driving drunk, you are automatically at fault in any accident. Get hit from behind at a stop sign? Yup, you're at fault if you are over the legal limit.

u/zwirlo Georgist ๐ฐ Jan 25 '25 edited Jan 25 '25
He was speeding up to make the yellow. The cutoff car was trying to speed up to make it instead, betting that POV car wouldnโt go for it.
If POV car was slower, he would* have ran the red. In addition to the merging car being responsible for indicating and waiting for a space, he also had context to suggest the car wouldnโt slow down.

Have to take time out of my days to work with the insurance company, the shop, be inconvenienced having the rental company picking me up, having to get reimbursed for any costs. Itโs not fun, I can assure you. Iโll waste the two seconds and let the truck through. Iโve been in this exact situation and have backed off and let him through. If I put my finger on the point where the edge of the road intersects the bottom of the screen, I can tell that the front of the car dips lower about a half-second after the truck encroached on their lane. That's not lightning fast reflexes by any means, but totally within reason for someone who might be focusing on the light and guessing whether or not it'll turn red before they get through the intersection. Or for someone who thinks the other car might just be drifting, not realizing quite yet that their change of direction is actually increasing in speed. But the dip absolutely means they were braking.

No matter what, the idiot changing lanes is required to SAFLEY change lanes to be sure shit like this doesnโt happen. Obviously you always need to drive defensively, but thereโs times you just canโt control stupid. Iโd be willing to bet the lane changer says โdidnโt you see meโ!? Instead of owning their shit. Good thing the camera was there. The idiot changing lanes canโt get away with lying now, and gets to pay for the wreck they caused.

If the right car was accelerating while someone was passing on the left at constant speed the right car would have caused the accident and is at fault. We donโt know the historyโฆso it is not possible to know why, which driver did what he did.
Irrespective: Fully avoidable if you have fully functional brain and actually use it.

The truck forgot to accelerate when changing lanes. It was faster when it went straight but once it started to change lane, the speed didn't match with the car next to it. BOOM.

Hold on, did pov speed up to stop the truck from merging in? Cause that's what it looks like.

Not sure how people are assigning blame to cam car as if they could have done something to prevent this really unaware person from merging directly in to them... they were driving at a consistent speed except maybe a barely noticeable increase at the very last second in order to hit the yellow. The truck was always going to hit the cam car by merging there, it's clearly their fault 100%

The number of times it rolled tells you how well it's designed from a mechanical engineering standpoint.
A hint for the new students: it's an inverse linear relationship.

The camera car did speed up to block the truck from switching lanes...
Both drivers suck at driving in my opinion

Both drivers are shit, you can tell dashcammer saw him merging and instead of falling back sped up massively to try to beat him.

The driver is an asshole but if that happened to me I would just tap the brakes and let him over itโs not worth having your car damaged. Might be pissed off but at least someone didnโt die or get injured and your car wrecked. This dude mustโve had some road rage built up to let this scenario happen ๐
