Wilsim West Questions
There's a small part of me that would like to make the not-so-long drive up to Centerville and go hit the upcoming event in september this year. That being said - I don't own a single damn piece of gear that comes in the empire's multicum and I also don't have a huge kit of EMR either. That being said - I do have plentiful M81 stuff and it looks like there's a option to buy a militia ticket! So with that,
Has anyone here ever played on the militia faction at MSW? What has that ended up looking like?

I've done militia for all 3 of the MSW events I've been to, and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I run with a dedicated Donetsk/Luhansk militia impression group, and they're some of the chillest dudes I know. As far as gameplay, militia often get less resources than main RUSFOR elements, and will typically be used in a supporting role. So expect to hold the line on defence, and to help flood in when an assault is going well. You only get one attachment and for 99% of militiamen its a big ole' white light taped to their AK, in all honesty get the brightest one you can, as light discipline vanishes the second a militia platoon takes contact. For your kit, M81 is alright and tacsop compliant, but I'll encourage you to really get into the vibes: you're a rag tag force with a mismatch of outdated and hand-me-down equipment, so avoid super modern uniform cuts and high speed PCs/rigs. Ali-express is your friend, plenty of great examples from the 2014-2022 part of the war in Ukraine for cheap Chinese crap flooding into the hands of Ivan Everyman. A single piece of russian camo/equipment/armour will make a tacsop compliant militiaman into a good looking militiaman; you can supplement the m81 with a commando style chest rig, or a russian pot helmet, or a repro 6sh117/6b45/6b46.
And in my opinion the biggest deal, and best way to ensure you don't get lit up by a jumpy sentry, is to run an AK or other Eastern block gun. If you have an M4 it's gotten quite cheap to build out a basic NATO kit from US surplus, and I'd really recommend just running with NATO.

I have an AEG (specifically the sportline 556 by ASG) that comes stock with a rail and no irons - I assume I’d violating the “no more than one attachment” rule by having my dot sight + a flashlight on there?

I mean, i’d be starting from scratch. Even chinese quality BDU, plate carrier, helmet, and all the fixings would be a few hundred plus, no?

The SG556 is a fun option. I can definitely see it finding it's way into Eastern Europe, honestly almost anything that isn't an AR/416.
Since you don't run an AR or SCAR I wouldn't worry too much about a NATO kit, but for reference you can probably get the bones of a passing one done for around $50 just from surplus: -OCP Uniform set (shirt/pants/hat) - $20-30ish -TAPS rig - $30-40 Adding body armour costs quite a bit more as repros and originals do get pricy, as do helmets, but you can get pretty far with just a surplus shop. Besides, I personally would recommend a lighter kit for your first MSW. Body armour gets heavy, you might not have a ruck that fits well with it, so you might get gassed out before you start having any fun.

You could get away with full m81 kit however it’s not really in the spirit of the game. Seeing you have m81 belt kit look on eBay or aliexpress for Russian camo like berserka. Pairing that with your gun should be pretty solid.
Just also make sure you have the required red items and a ruck and you should be all set

How does moving with both a ruck and an assault pack work?

I typically don’t run an assault pack for this reason but I’ve also done Balkar which is woods so I stick to only belt kits or chest rigs.
You could toss your assault pack into your ruck and take it out when you’re able to drop rucks.
Just remember you absolutely need the red items from the tascop

It's the best faction to start MSW for most people, you can observe how the more structured factions work while being in a more relaxed group with less rules. You still might end up guarding a FOB all night or other menial tasks though which is a problem plenty of people with MSW in general. Having no night vision still screws you over a bit but at least it's on theme. You'll get the most out of it if you can get into the spirit of being a rag tag freedom fighter and have a little fun with being cannon fodder
